Map of county needs rethinking, and listing former civil townships[edit]

As Phizzy noted three years ago, Redford's coloring is inconsistent with that of the other townships. But whatever fix is implemented, it's going to affect every map for every city and township in the county (except Redford). At the same time, it occurs to me that perhaps the maps for Michigan counties should distinguish between incorporated charter townships and unincorporated general law townships, say, with a patterned screen.

On a different subject, I propose that we add a section to either the article itself or the template Template:Wayne County, Michigan listing the former civil townships. See the article on Cook County, Illinois for an example of how this would look inline; I'm working on the template in my sandbox just for kicks. LibertyHiller (talk) 06:02, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wayne County Road Commission[edit]

This is section to discuss proposal to merge Wayne County Road Commission into Wayne County, Michigan article.

The Wayne County Road Commission is now the Wayne County Department of Public Services. Instead of being a quasi-independent government agency, it is now integrated into the county governance structure for Wayne County, unlike the other 82 counties in the state. (County road commissions in Michigan are governed by a board of the county road commission. Their members may be elected or appointed, but the county commission/board does not handle the oversight of road functions, just like the sheriff is the elected official responsible for the oversight of the sheriff's department.)

In any case, the article in question is very short, and all of the pertinent content is located here except the list of bridges on the National Register of Historic Places, which is properly left to the National Register of Historic Places listings in Wayne County, Michigan article. Notability isn't inherited, and the WCRC article fails to establish the notability of the former agency. The bridges are notable, but that does not make the WCRC itself so. Thanks for setting up a merger proposal discussion, after I objected to your previously redirecting the Wayne County Road Commission article without any discussion. I restored the article.
Keep separate is my view. I think having a separate article is good and fine. The proposed merger, if implemented as done by Imzadi1979 before, would lose the list together of works by the department. The material is perhaps too long to be included in the Wayne County article. It is fine in a separate article. The list provides readers the means to navigate among the different works, and the article can be developed to include other, non NRHP-listed works. Yes, the National Register of Historic Places listings in Wayne County, Michigan list does probably include all the currently mentioned works, but I can't find them all there. There's too much other stuff. It is impossible there for a reader to navigate among the Road Commission's works. And it is impossible to add other works of the Road Commission to that list. I wouldn't mind the separate article being revised to cover the entire modern department, too, in which case it could properly be renamed. But if the list of works would be dropped, I would oppose that. I oppose "merging" this in, if that would mean the material would be lost. --doncram 03:32, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Merge - The commission is small enough of an agency that it can be covered in the main county article. Usually, only state-level road agencies are notable enough for their own articles. I agree that usually only state-level road agencies are notable enough. This is unusual, it is notable because it is so unusual as a county agency. The sources in the article explain, this county was a leader, it was more advanced than the state agency. It adopted certain bridge technologies before the state agency did. It was hired by the state to do work, i think outside its county, because it was capable, while the state agency could not do that work. It stands out in my experience working with NRHP database data as, i think, the only county bridge department having multiple (5 or more) works that are NRHP-listed, while there are numerous state ones. The article can be developed more from the sources given. --doncram 08:58, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. When starting the article, I only knew it was unusual among county depts for the number of NRHP bridges. Consulting the sources, from which I have now added more, I see that the commission was internationally known as a leader, and I think is quite notable on its own. I think further development is called for, but it is expanded already and I think too large to be kept only within the county article. Again to Dough4872 now, the list of bridges is not a list of bridges merely maintained, it is a starter list of works BY the commission; these works are notable enough to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which says something. --doncram 09:38, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
