Free agent[edit]

I thought he had to clear waivers before he was an actual free agent? (i.e. he cannot sign with any team right now.) What is the official term for someone who has been amnestied but hasn't yet hit the free market? hbdragon88 (talk) 05:57, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not aware of any specific terms. We could just leave the field blank. Zagalejo^^^ 00:43, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please insert another comma in the following; it would go just after "brawl". This is in about the 2nd paragraph.

>He was a participant in several controversial on-court incidents, most notably the Pacers–Pistons brawl and is known for his sometimes eccentric and outspoken behavior.

"Artest" Should Be Called "World Peace" throughout[edit]

His legal name is Metta World Peace. The article even states "World Peace" is his surname. Especially in light of things like the Caitlyn Jenner article, it's morally required, and I'm sure somewhere in Wikipedia's rules, to refer to him by his legal and chosen name. I'll leave this up for a bit, and if not replies or adequate objections surface, I will make the changes.

Take a look at this, this, and this. The article reflects the consensus; it is how it should be. —DangerousJXD (talk) 11:03, 26 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please change:

Metta Sandiford-Artest[1] (born Ronald William Artest Jr.; November 13, 1979) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. He is currently the player development coach for the South Bay Lakers of the NBA G League. He was known as Ron Artest before legally changing his name to Metta World Peace in September 2011, and again in May 2020, this time, to Metta Ford-Artest.

Because:

The original text had incorrect info. His name is now "Metta Sandiford-Artest," according to this article: https://www.thescore.com/nba/news/1973006

Furthermore, the above is also a more trustworthy source for American basketball news than the "International Business Times." 2607:FEA8:A420:114D:4D58:98F:33E:386B (talk) 19:57, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Article title[edit]

I moved this article back to the previous title of Metta World Peace. This subject is most known in pop culture as Metta World Peace or Ron Artest, so because of this the article should be under one of those names due to WP:COMMONNAME. His new name is not nearly as widely known as his previous ones. If anyone disagrees please start a WP:RM. StaticVapor message me! 20:13, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Article title (again)[edit]

It looks like this article was renamed a few months ago with no discussion. This article should be titled Metta World Peace, even if that is no longer his legal name, per WP:COMMONNAME. Every media reference to him names him Metta World Peace, and he still calls himself that on his own Twitter. Nobody knows him by his legal name. 71.167.26.132 (talk) 13:39, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 13 December 2023[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: not moved. (closed by non-admin page mover) Vanderwaalforces (talk) 09:03, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Metta Sandiford-ArtestMetta World Peace – Per talk page comments above, whilst the official name has changed, his WP:COMMONNAME is still Metta World Peace (see refs: [1], [2], [3]). The current article name occurred as a result of a move war in which movers did not engage in a discussion. • Oppose. I'm seeing lots of recent sources using "Metta Sandiford-Artest" [4] [5] [6] [7]. Per WP:NAMECHANGES, "If the reliable sources written after the change is announced routinely use the new name, Wikipedia should follow suit and change relevant titles to match.". 162 etc. (talk) 18:29, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Most sources since 2020 still use Metta World Peace (49,000 hits) significantly more often than Metta Sandiford-Artest (5,850 hits). For recent Masked Singer coverage, also see: [8] vs. [9]. Happily888 (talk) 22:02, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Google raw hit counts are inaccurate. Per WP:HITS:

In the case of Google (and other search engines such as Bing and Yahoo!), the hit count at the top of the page is unreliable and should usually not be reported.

If I keep clicking on the "next page" links for searches on both names, they each end up showing 25 pages of results, with 10 hits each. —Bagumba (talk) 13:09, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
However you can request an accurate result count by adding the parameter 'rc' to the search request; see Google documentation for info. This makes the Google result count reliable up to 1MB of results. Happily888 (talk) 15:14, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per WP:COMMONNAME. He was most well known under Meta World Peace. And regardless of how this discussion goes, it is definitely very important that we have it as it was improperly moved without any consensus. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 18:55, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment ...as it was improperly moved without any consensus: Editors are asked to be bold, so the move was fine procedurally. It's since been stable for 3 years, so this would not qualify at WP:RMUM to revert the move:

There has been no discussion (especially no recent discussion) about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title

Having this RM now is fine, but I dont see any past procedural issues. Judge the title on its own merits. —Bagumba (talk) 22:54, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Although the argument supported by WP:COMMONNAME is a compelling one, WP:NAMECHANGES should control here. He remains a public figure, and is consistently identified by his new name. Perhaps at some point after his death, his common name might become more relevant, and that would become the best title for the article. Over the course of Caitlyn Jenner's life, she is clearly better known as Bruce Jenner, and that would be her common name. Nevertheless, since she is a living person, and since she remains a public figure, the article bears a title consistent with WP:NAMECHANGES, not WP:COMMONNAME. Taxman1913 (talk) 17:31, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll note that the Jenner example is a bad one, since WP:DEADNAME is a very different guideline which does not come into play here. 162 etc. (talk) 18:35, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note that the Metta World Peace title was also the result of a previous move discussion (see the archive), and so the article should not have been moved away from that title without a new request. Undiscussed moves of this kind often cause problems later on. Dekimasuよ! 07:30, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your opinion is contrary to WP:BOLDMOVE. —Bagumba (talk) 08:15, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
However, not engaging in the discussion process where a move is potentially controversial is contrary to WP:PCM. Happily888 (talk) 09:17, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes it's hindsight that a move is controversial. I don't see anything to suggest anything nefarious at the time. Opening this RM is fine, to assess the title now. Wikipedia talk:Requested moves is the best place to suggest any overall process improvements. Regards.Bagumba (talk) 10:32, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please see WP:PCM, where this has already been covered as the process. A potentially controversial move is a move which there has been any past debate about the best title for the page or which someone could reasonably disagree with the move. As there was a previous move discussion for this page, a discussion should have occurred instead of a bold move (and after the bold move was reverted, it should not have been reinstated without engaging in a discussion prior to it). Happily888 (talk) 10:46, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I had reverted my above comment, but you restored it. I'm striking it now. I think it's best to just discuss the current discussion's merits. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 10:56, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I would like "The Panda's Friend" to be listed among Ron Artest's names in the beginning of the article. Here is source saying that he changed his name to this.

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{Edit semi-protected}} template. Are there any reliable sources beyond breaking news? Not sure if it was ever prominent, or if it was a legal name, common nickname in China, or just promotional. —Bagumba (talk) 02:42, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
