Why is this on Speedy deletion? It's coherent, sensible, informative and should be merged with the other article instead of being outright deleted.--Pharos 23:38, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I happened to come across the duplication while browsing and proposed a merge. I don't have a passion either way. But I'd note (a) The Singing Badger's summary claims "reads like plagiarism, doesn't have much unique info, contains several inaccuracies" and (b) this article is mostly about Webster's career at the time and barely about the play. Excellent thought, David Brooks! I have moved the text to John Webster, where all are invited to vet it and improve it, especially User:The Singing Badger who is so knowledgable about Webster's career that he detected "several inaccuracies." —and listed this as a candidate for speedy deletion! "Reception and performance history" section[edit]

This play is four hundred tears old, is popular and appears regularly. To include too many modern performances against the wide sweep of the historical background, except where highly notable, seems to go against the WP:RECENT policy. I've just removed one but some others, with more notable directors or players, still remain. Do we need to be still more selective, or is there justification for a "Notable recent productions" section? --Old Moonraker (talk) 06:24, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK — I think the time has come. I'm thinking of going back as far as 1980, leaving only the English National Opera version as something a bit different. I know some of these were good, but in the context of the history of the work, not notable. Views?

"Historical Staging" section[edit]

Add new quotation plz "Strangling is a very quiet death"[edit]

Portrait[edit]

Raphael and Giulio Romano, Portrait of Doña Isabel de Requesens y Enriquez de Cardona-Anglesola, previously thought to be of the Duchess Giovanna d'Aragona, on whose life the plot is loosely based

The painting by Giuio Romano (school of Raphael) is no longer thought to be a portrait of Giovanna (more commonly called Jeanne d'Aragon). It's hard to see why it ever was as the painting was groundbreakingly sensuous for its time and Giovanna was barely sixteen years old and unmarried at the times of its commission: even the free falling locks of hair would have been unthinkable. It's now thought to be a portrait of Doña Isabel de Requesens, a celebrated beauty of the time married to Ramón de Cardona, viceroy of Naples. As far as I am aware is was never thought to be of Giovanna d'Aragona, Duchess of Amalfi, who was not 16 at the time. She died ten years before Raphael did, when Giulio Romano was about 11. It was thought to be Giovanna d'Aragona, Duchess of Tagliacozzo the patron of the arts. The caption is just wrong. Paul B (talk) 15:01, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If the section is deemed relevant, there are several mechanical errors in need of tending to. It seems there's lack of proper capitalization and links to other articles. Mcondon11 (talk) 05:23, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It also includes performance information that ought to go in the "Performance history" section (and redundantly does). More polished play articles (e.g. Hamlet, Macbeth) feature a "Texts" section; perhaps this could go there? Too bad there is not yet a standard Wiki format for such articles, each has its own section arrangement it seems.Henry chianski (talk) 18:47, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
