This page is full of religious mumbo jumbo from the get-go. How is that unbiased?

I know for a fact that some mental illnesses, like autism and aspergers syndrome, cause a strong desire to be alone and isolated, shouldn't those be included? (by the way, those are the only two I know of)

page about buddhist beliefs regarding solitude?[edit]

This page seems to just lead into a description of the importance of solitude to Buddhist monks. It never explicitly says this, and so is highly suspect. Fuzzform 03:36, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]


I agree. Scrap that part or rewrite it to encompass more religions than Buddhism.

Plenty left to do here[edit]

You seem at home with this subject, and have made a good start. You might consider adding sections on the other religious traditions' views on solitude. for instance, there is a long history of Christian reclusives. Thomas Merton is a very approachable example of the Christian monk. Marsha Sinetar, in her book, "Ordinary People as Monks and Mystics" makes a very strong case for secular solitude. The Taoists were often said to be found, "Cloud hidden, whereabouts unknown". And perhaps you could discuss solitude as a part of the day, rather than a vocation, for instance people who work instensively with people for a living (social workers, prison guards, teachers) but choose to live alone at home to "recharge theier batteries". Negative[edit]

I just added some positive material. More is needed. It is strange how the Wikiquote page[1] is all positive and Wikipedia page (was) all negative on solitude. N6n (talk) 15:26, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The very first paragraph states "It may stem from bad relationships, loss of loved ones, deliberate choice, infectious disease, mental disorders, neurological disorders or circumstances of employment or situation (see castaway)." This makes Solitude sound like a disease! A desire to be alone is NOT a disease! Agreed. Whoever wrote this, has a strong focus on not being able to be by themselves. The description lists exclusively negative reasons for feeling the urge to live in solitude. ambiguity between this and another page.[edit]

On the solitude page, it mentions that solitude has been distinguished from loneliness esp. as a positive correlative. On the emotional insecurity page, it states that the greater the insecurity, the greater the isolation becomes. When you click on isolation, it redirects to the solitude page. This is inherently contradictory, as emotional insecurity is pejorative (if not at least a negative quality). Maybe a disambiguity page with solitude, isolation, and sequestration could be made for this dubious affair. (75.71.118.98 (talk) 15:01, 14 September 2012 (UTC))[reply]
