I really appreciate the supportive comments from everyone, below: they make up for the slings and arrows of rude editors that we can get out in the general 'pedia. Thanks again!! -- hike395 16:21, 31 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Yosemite National Park

Yes, I'm the webmaster of http://www.yosemite.ca.us/ including Yosemite online books It's been fun posting old books online, although I get a surprising amount of resistence from archive and special collection librarians from using their public domain holdings. I have limited time to contribute to wiki, but plan to add some more articles about selected Yosemite-related people. If you are specializing on mountains, you probably already know about Place Names of the High Sierra (1926) by Francis P. Farquhar Dananderson 17:33, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Weblog

If you ever decide to start a weblog or something like that, be sure to put a link here. You write interesting stuff. Mackerm 20:16, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Glad to hear from you

Hike395, it's good to hear you are still editing some. Your edits seem to have coincided with the swarm of earthquakes around Long Valley caldera. As an admirer of the power of Nature, I find this quite auspicious. Perhaps .... Regards, Ancheta Wis 02:31, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Cleaver Disappointment?

I just argued on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Cleaver for

 • Keep, for the sense, re glacier-bearing mountains in at least western N. Amer, of a rock formation flanked by two glaciers. (Even if the term is geographically restricted, it would be either a redir to the dominant term, or the target of the redirects from all the other regional terms.) These are important features in mountaineers' planning of ascent and traverse routes, and IMO an article could discuss what they have in common, probably different categories of them, and examples that affect notable routes.

But i count 4 Del to my 1 Keep, and 14 hours left.

Hi there :)

Just wanted to say hi, and that your work here is very much appreciated (esp your continued work on on WikiProject Mountains). I for one tend to ignore arguements - which is easy since geology and geography topics aren't big targets for that type of thing. Take care. :) --mav 09:07, 31 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Lodgepole Pine

Hi Hike, Thanks; not my pic tho, I just put contorta site:.gov into google image search. Sometimes that gets something worthwhile, sometimes it doesn't, this time it did. Even got a second (of subsp. latifolia), which I'll put in for comparison, when I've padded out the text to make space for it . . . (the thing I find annoying is one can't put pics left of bulleted items as the pic covers the bullets, nor on the right above the foot of a taxobox, as that shunts everything down leaving a big gap - have to ask if those can be solved) - MPF 22:39, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia question -- moved from top, I'm still a newbie!

Hi Hiki395. I am doing a small research project on Wikipedia and have a couple questions about your extensive contribution to Support Vector Machines listed on my discussion page. If you have time, I'd really appreciated it. Great article and thanks! --Caromk 03:17, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Dear Hike395, I noticed that you modified this page, and did quite some changes. I think the page looks good, but one needs to explain what on-line gradient descent is. I don't want to modify this page, because I don't know anything about the subject matter. Thanks.

Olegalexandrov

Hi Hike395,
Maybe you should mention that on-line gradient descent is the same as stochastic gradient descent. Maybe it is because I know nothing about this, but it was not clear for me from reading that page that they are the same. What do you think?
Olegalexandrov
Yes, that is a good idea. -- hike395

Yosemite articles

As a matter of fact I was planning to compare my references on the geology of Kings Canyon and Sequoia areas to see how closely they fit with the Geology of the Yosemite area. If they are very similar (and I think they will be), I will expand Geology of the Yosemite area with any other info I can gleam from my references and rename the article. I know far less about the vegetation of the region, so do what you see fit with vegetation of the Yosemite area (I like the idea of a more general article). Your example, does look like a good start. --mav 16:54, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. Here you go. http://www.unn.ac.uk/~evgp1/gary/deg2dec.htm If you don't like this one, then just search Google for others.  :) --mav 23:33, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
