This page title is inappropriate. In German, "Widerstand" means just "resistance" without much political connotation. The page belongs to German resistance movement or perhaps to political resistance agains Nazism, but "Widerstand" should be a dictionary entry at best. Kosebamse 13:17, 22 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Political resistance against Nazism is better investigated under Appeasement as within Germany political resistance was impossible after the Enabling Act of 1933 (see 1932 references to Zentrum party and the Concordat 1933 in page for Pope Pius XII ). Widerstand seems to be the short-hand used in the German academic world that releases studies of the military and society (aristocratic and religious) plots during the Nazi era 1933- 1945 . Since visible dissent was not tolerated , only under-ground printing could have actually 'hit the street'. The German Underground Movements should be the term to cover student and workers' level plots and struggle . In religious terms the acceptance of Nazism can be seen in an even-handed manner - both the Catholic and the Protestant Churches seem to be culpable , though the latter 's increasing subjugation of individual will pre-dates this period and is considered a factor . Papal attitudes are still being defended and are complicated to read because of the change of Popes and the heavy hand of Cardinal Pacelli (as Secretary of State) before he ascended to the Papacy in 1939. The Papal Concordat with the Nazis was designed to castrate the influence of Priests , who were disbarred thereafter from holding civil office and thereby exercising serious street-level resistance. .The military-plot histories are turgid but their conclusions are important as revealing factors of ideology which ,like the religious , throw light on the period , but again the mentalities of the players are rooted in earlier periods and ideologies . A general militarism in the field of Education since the previous century coupled with the terms of the Versailles agreement after the loss of the First War , are the principal factors within the civil and the military society . Appeasement as a field of study and awareness has always defined the British and French Governments actions in Munich in 1938 , however the subject should not be limited to that . American political attitudes should be as much a part of the field as the purely religious and come more under what should be termed Industrial Appeasement which could usefully include all nations having business with German Industry . It should be noted that at no point were such industrial interests in any country brought to account . The control of the media and the poisoning of minds thereby are the principal lesson from the period according to Speer , Hitler's architect and minister for Armaments , though the results of the industrial appeasement could be seen as providing real imbalance in world society today .
