Category talk:GFDL files
These are being squirted all over image pages, wasting people time (and database content) .. but are completely meaningless (GDFL explicitly only applies to text). Or, if they are supposed to apply to the text of the image pages, they are redundant. mfc
- Good gravy, this is one of the largest categories on the Wikipedia (I figure only Category:Stub has more articles under its wing.) I'm pretty sure you're completely and utterly wrong about the applicability of the GFDL to images, but I'll withhold my vote until someone more nuanced in these matters than I can provide a comment.

Image and category removed[edit]
Acting as a developer I've removed both the image and category from the GFDL template until MediaWiki 1.4 is in service on this wiki. Their presence caused a denial of service attack warning and mass query kill on the main database server for the sites at a low traffic time. Mediawiki 1.4 has some changes which should make it possible to add them back without DOSing the sites. Jamesday 11:38, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Tranfer of images to Commons[edit]
Many images are lying here not accessible to any other of the Wikimedia projects. Commons has now existed for nine months and it's about time we eliminate practically all free images on Wikipedia by transferring them to Commons. It is a fairly easy task: save the image locally, open up page Commons upload page, select file and paste text from Wikipedia description, then create a section ==Wikipedia image history== and copy the image history for correct attribution. It is important that the name is not changed, unless you wish to edit all pages on which this image is located to reflect the change. At this point the local image should be deleted by tagging it as such or doing yourself (if you have the power). This category currently contains, quite literally, thousands of images which I cannot handle by myself. If anyone wants to help, feel free - I'll set up a proper "WikiProject" page soon and properly advertise it. In the future we should consider creating transfer scripts which fulfil this function with only human monitoring. --Oldak Quill 10:01, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
