Halo Wars[edit]

Where's the section of the Flood's role in Halo Wars? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.157.124.105 (talk) 20:42, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'll add it as soon as I find a bit more info about it (I don't own the game yet but will read into it), thank you for notifying about this. Nite Owl II 05:35, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flood Juggernaut[edit]

I have read about a type of Flood that was encrypted into Halo 2 called the Flood Juggernaut, which was removed because it was considered to powerful and hard to beat. Should I include this in the article? I will refind the source if necessary. Nite Owl II 05:35, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you have a reliable source for it, it should not be in the article. --Der Wohltempierte Fuchs (talk) 13:48, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

true there was a flood juggernaut i have seen numerous videos of the creature and i know why they dropped it ... it was nearly impossible to beat and there was two of them —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.187.71.167 (talk) 12:00, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The rings[edit]

I think there is a serious flaw:

Not once in the article is the role of the rings explicitly stated. In the intro paragraph, all it says is that the Forerunner commited mass suicide, and doesn't mention the rings. In the paragraph concerning the first game, it is written as if the reader already knows the true function of the rings. "When Master Chief learns of the devastation that Halo would cause to humanity and all other sentient life if activated,..." This is rather confusing for someone who hasn't played the games before, and that's exactly the sort of person that this article is for.

There needs to be a sentence somewhere in the intro that explicitly states what the rings are for, and that there are seven of them. A another good addition would be to mention in the Halo CE section that the ring in question is reffered to as Installation 04. The reference to Installation 05 in the Halo 2 section is a bit of a floater, and adding a similar line in CE would fix that.

Any suggestions for how to restructure the article?

The Flood Leaked?[edit]

A few months after Halo was released, I remember being told that Bungie had tightly controlled all information about the Flood to keep it a total surprise. Then someone at Bungie tried to leak information (whether or not they succeeded I can't remember) and got fired for it. Has anyone else heard this rumour? Can anyone confirm this rumour? Because if it is true, I think it'd make an interesting addition to this article. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 23:40, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have never come across that information in my perusal. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 00:52, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Just thought I'd ask and see if anyone else had seen it. I didn't particularly believe it nowadays anyway. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 00:58, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can the flood speak??[edit]

Cant the flood speak? Is it possible? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.117.251.202 (talk) 06:18, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is it physically possible? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.22.200.172 (talk) 23:30, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Gravemind yes, but for the combat forms/ carrier forms / infection forms it is impossible to speak, but they sometimes make strange noises, such screeching sounds, which implies that they in fact have some sort of vocal cords, but probably not evolved enough to speak/pretty much like a rat can squeel but never talk. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.59.119.37 (talk) 22:45, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not true, in Halo 3 the Gravemind spoke through the Prophet of Truth as he was infested, also it spoke through 3 tank forms at the same time. Since the Gravemind is only the physical manifestation of the combined intelligence of all flood forms, whatever the Gravemind can do, the flood can do, as they are one in the same. Never say "not evolved enough" by the way, it's the most unscientific thing a biologist could say as it implies evolutionary "levels".--Hoyt596 (talk) 00:31, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Glassed half a continent"[edit]

Umm... just FYI, but "half of the African Continent" was not glassed. only the area in and around Voi was, and the statement made by Lord Hood was exaggerrated for theatrical and argumentative effect. In other words, he exaggerrated because he was angry. 75.129.97.238 (talk) 10:58, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly how do we know this? We really only have to go on his word. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 18:57, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Glitch[edit]

There is a glitch Flood form in Halo: Combat Evolved, should this be mentioned?~Tailsman67~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.71.63.39 (talk) 18:37, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nope. We don't care game guide material or minute trivia, especially if it hasn't been covered by reliable sources. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 19:59, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Halo 4[edit]

Can't confirm this since don't speak french but if someone can confirm the translation it would suit this page if can be confirmed. The translation here The scanned images from the oxm magazine. All images can be zoomed, easy to read if you want to confirm.--Ronnie42 (talk) 00:46, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I remember reading from the Halo wikia[1] that they assimilate information from all lifeforms and combine to act as a collective consciousness (useful to do complex tasks such as flying a spaceship). If that is true then they should be mentioned as a collectivist species much like the Borg.

I would have to check the Encyclopedia but I'm not entirely sure they are mentioned to have a collective consciousness specifically. We can't use the Halo Wikia as a source. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 13:19, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The Flood are ...[edit]

Ealdgyth plans to run this one at TFA in February. I just want to note that there's a potential issue with the grammar of "The Flood are". I ran some Google searches, and the question of is vs. are after a collective noun seems to be a difficult question, and the answers seem to be changing from year to year. So ... I thought about it, but decided to leave it alone. If anyone has thoughts on this, please weigh in before Feb. 25. - Dank (push to talk) 03:29, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Different issue: The blurb is here. We need an image for the blurb to run on the Main Page. In a pinch, we could use the image from the article for Martin O'Donnell, since he was in charge of all the music and sound design for the Flood (along with everything else Bungie did). We'd have to add him to the blurb, but the current blurb is at the minimum character length, so that works. Other free images that would work would be concept art or pictures of Vic DeLeon or Robert McLees, but I've only been able to find copyrighted images. - Dank (push to talk) 16:12, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Dank: yeah, the noun thing crops up and there's a lot of conflicting guidance on it—Microsoft itself does both on its official pages. (It gets even worse when you consider the idea that you use singular or plural based on whether the collective noun is acting as a group or individuals, which starts getting into philosophic questions about the nature of a fictional hive mind.) I'm fine with adjusting to "is" to match American English, which seems to generally go that route (versus BrEng which seems more permissible in allowing either option) if you think that scans better. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 16:25, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We're really talking about the Flood together with their hosts, or Flood-infected creatures, right? - Dank (push to talk) 17:05, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
One option: "The Flood is a fictional fungus-like species that infects and controls sentient life ... The Flood-infected creatures, also called "The Flood" ... - Dank (push to talk) 17:47, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Everything all together, yeah. Hosts, the parasites separate from the hosts, the forms of the Flood that technically don't require hosts, just biomatter. Your option could work, I'll see if I can get a good source for the fungal nature.
As to pictures, while Marty O'Donnell definitely worked on the sound design for the Flood, it's one of those things where I don't have any actual source that says specifically he did, so I'd feel a bit odd about putting him in. I've reached out to Robert McLees and Vic Deleon, the two referenced artists in the development section, to see if they'd be willing to freely license an image of themselves. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 18:06, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Dank, I've taken a stab at reworking the lead. Does that work a bit better to solve your issue? If it does I'll work on the rest of the article.
This frog infected by Ribeiroia demonstrates limb mutations similar to Flood combat forms.
Also, found another option for a possible image. Working on the analysis section found a good source detailing the Flood's similarity to real parasites, and this image would do a good job of demonstrating the morphological part of the Flood discussed in the article. Would have to adjust the blurb, but a decent way of showing what the non-free images do. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 20:29, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, the lead text works for me. Pinging David Levy: I think you objected to an image of a wasp infected with a fungus a couple of years ago that was supposed to look like a Flood creature ... does this image work for you? (I'm agnostic.) - Dank (push to talk) 21:03, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In my view, it's too far removed to illustrate the broad subject. Even if this were a deliberate similarity discussed by the games' creators (rather than an observation made by a journalist), it would be tangential in the context of a TFA blurb. The photograph might be suitable for use in the relevant section of the article, but I don't recommend using it on the main page. —David Levy 22:13, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Just to follow up, I've heard nothing from the people I reached out to on the photo front. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 17:11, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, just to confirm: O'Donnell did the composing and sound design, right? - Dank (push to talk) 17:50, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
O'Donnell is listed in the credits as "audio lead, sound design & original music", with Jay Weiland as sound designer and Adam Tewes as additional sound. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 18:14, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Going with the only image we've got ... feel free to edit or swap it. - Dank (push to talk) 18:25, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
