Orchid Genera change to category[edit]

I personally think the page will be too long if we list the orchid generas look at orchidspecies.com there are over 2000. I suggest making it into a category separated by families and sub families --Cs california 09:37, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New version[edit]

I'll be working on a new version in my userspace at User:Circeus/Sandbox/tree. It will include more information (e.g. systematically include authors, abbreviations, some comments). I'm not sure yet whether I want to include former genera, though. I'll be working on a separate list of hybrid genera. Circeus (talk) 00:52, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of natural Orchidaceae generaList of Orchidaceae genera – The vast majority of lists of genera per family have the proposed structure. It is unclear why this should be different with the Orchidaceae, or what the List of ¨unnatural¨ Orchidaceae genera would contain Dwergenpaartje (talk) 09:44, 14 February 2018 (UTC)--Relisting.Ammarpad (talk) 10:39, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Relisted and WP:PLANT invited. –Ammarpad (talk) 10:41, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Natural here means "occurring in nature". Intergeneric hybrids may occur in nature, but orchids readily hybridize between genera when hand pollinated by humans. Human produced hybrids are "unnatural" genera. I think a list of natural genera would be more useful than a list including potentially hundreds of unnatural genera. But it is not clear to me that the contents of this list are in fact restricted to natural genera. There is a recent list of orchid genera here that uses the term "natural genus" for non-hybrid genera, but it does not note whether the listed hybrid genera occur in nature. Plantdrew (talk) 15:21, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Someone who knows plenty about orchids better look through this list first. There are many named artificial intergeneric orchid hybrids with established used invented genus names. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 06:34, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. Natural is ambiguous here - it may mean non-hybrid, but I first interpreted it as opposed to artificial, the latter meaning non-monophyletic. Lavateraguy (talk) 11:25, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The link https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/pdfs/plant-registration-forms/list-of-orchid-genera-with-components.pdf lists a massive amount of generic names for intergeneric orchid hybrids, all or nearly all likely invented by breeders and not discovered and declared the usual way. About "The vast majority of lists of genera ... " above: most plant families do not contain such a huge amount of named artificial intergeneric hybrids. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 11:46, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. As noted above, "natural" is unclear except to orchid taxonomy specialists. "List of Orchidaceae genera" for naturally occurring genera and some other title for human created nothogenera seems best to me. The scope of the articles can then be explained in the lead sections. Peter coxhead (talk) 12:15, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - there is plainly room for a separate list of orchid hybrids. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:27, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. The list contains a few nothogenera. It also contains some unaccepted genera (synonyms), some noted as such (e.g. Acacallis) and others not (e.g. Dactylorchis). Lavateraguy (talk) 15:42, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Updating the list[edit]

What is the best workflow to check Kew's list? Currently wikispecies contains 704 accepted genera while Orchidaceae says there are 800 and Flora Online counts 905. Kew's checklist only returns a list of species, not genera.

Frdp (talk) 11:22, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Frdp: If by "Kew's checklist" you mean the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families, this is, I understand, based on the same underlying database as Plants of the World Online, which does gives a list of accepted genera. See here. Peter coxhead (talk) 19:33, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Peter coxhead: Thank you! I was using Kew Science for some reason. Frdp (talk) 20:36, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Frdp: actually, if you look both the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families (WCSP) and Plants of the World Online (PoWO) are labelled "Kew Science", although the URL for PoWO doesn't show it. WCSP can give more information than PoWO (e.g. a count of the number of species in each genus and distributions), but you have to use the "Build a Checklist" feature to generate lists. Also there are so many orchid genera that the list can only be generated in sections as the full list exceeds the search capacity. Peter coxhead (talk) 06:38, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
