Untitled[edit]

Overall nature of this entry has been taken mostly from Todd Balf's "The Darkest Jungle: The True Story of The Darien Exspedition And America's Ill-Fated Race to Connect the Seas."

A box including the names of other Darien explorers might be appropriate. Explorers to be included: Balboa, 1513; Drake, 1572; Oxeham, 1575; William Paterson, 1699; Dr. Edward Cullen, Irish physician and member of the Royal Geographic Society, 1850. Without overly expanding the Strain entry, want to draw in the political surrounds and competitive interest in the Darien Gap by Great Britain, Spain and the United States. Were other countries interested as well?

asahel.maass@gmail.com continues periodic edits to this page he began after reading Balf's book, and says "I'm having trouble characterizing Gisborne accurately. My wording seems to demonize Gisborne, not my intention. Would someone help?"
