Yuppie[edit]

I left the comment that "yuppie" was coined because of Jerry Rubins's "betrayal" - as far as I know, "yuppie" came from "Young Urban Professional", but I am far from sure of the etymology. Espen

Is he dead[edit]

Jerry Rubin is not dead. He faked his death and still frequents The Promenade Mall at Santa Monica. I have spoken with him personally, the last time in 2002. His business card reads "Jerry Rubin - Peace Activist. Have no gun, will travel." 63.116.189.82 02:13, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Santa Monica's Jerry Rubin is having a celebration of some sort on Sunday, where I have been invited to meet him for the first time. If I meet him, I will ask him if he was the Weatherman and a member of the Chicago 7. I bet the one I may meet gets that all the time. From what I can find, they are two different guys. The more famous one is dead. The less famous one is still a peace activist.
The link to "Jerry Rubin in Santa Monica" won't clear things up. It takes you to Chinese language site. If you open up the page source and translate the Chinese description into English, you find that it has nothing to do with a peace activist in Santa Monica, California. It's seems to be a site for Chinese on line gaming, or gambling, laundering money, or worse."

David Frost[edit]

Many Brits - myself included - first heard of Jerry Rubin when they saw him and a group of supporters 'take over' David Frost's ITV chat-show, some time in the early 1970's, if I remember right. I recall the taking-over amounted to lots of people occupying the interview area, though I think Frost rather relished the spectacle. The other main guest was the physical anthropologist Robert Ardrey who drew a rather snooty analogy between the behaviour of his fellow guests and that of young chimpanzees! Date of Death?[edit]

I think something needs to be stated about how he died in the 1980s or at least his beliefs did. A sad thing indeed, someone selling out their beliefs for money.

His date of death is given as November 28th, 1994 at the start of the article. Under the "DEATH" section the statement is that he died several days after being hit jaywalking on Wilshire Bl. One or the other is incorrect. I am surprised nobody else here has recognized such a glaring discrepancy. T.E. Goodwin 13:37, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I dunno if it was for money, exactly. He was just kind of weird guy, and even tho he got famous for a while with his antics and stuff, he was never that together mentally -- the antics point to a possible bipolar situation. I think he was just easily suggestible and got turned from one enthusiasm to another. It could have been Guru Maraha Ji (as happened to David Dellinger) or some other cult. The following material doesn't have a source:

  • When he was subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee, Rubin turned up one day dressed as a bare-chested guerilla armed with a plastic rifle, and the next day as Santa Claus. Finally he cut his hair and shaved his beard to appear as a soldier of the American Revolutionary War, while reminding the legislators that George Washington grew and smoked pot.
  • Jerry Rubin appeared on TV in Cleveland in an infamous interview by veteran broadcaster Dorothy Fuldheim about his book Do It!. He started to purposefully antagonize the no-nonsense Fuldheim, who threw him off the set when he repeatedly used profanity.

I have searched Rubin's autobiography and there is no mention there of this event at Saturday Night Live'​s episode. I really would like to clean up the "Other appearances" section, but there seems to be no reference to be found online or printed that allows us to do that with out just deleting the mention of "Saturday Night Live'​s episode" or the "fake commercial was later played". --Typewolf (talk) 17:49, 12 February 2015 (GMT)

I have taken out the sentence "The fake commercial was later played in a few other first season episodes, including the episode featuring Ron Nessen, President Gerald Ford's press secretary", since no citations have been added to confirm this since March 2008. Extensive sarcastic reference to Jerry Rubin in Christopher Lasch's 'The Culture of Narcissism.'[edit]

The bio of Rubin should include a reference to this. Perhaps even an excerpt. Lasch used Rubin's supermarket sweepstakes-style indulgence of big bucks New-Age healing hustles as something that was symbolic of the self-absorbed and politically fraudulent character of the late 1960's - early 1970's United States counterculture.
