VFD Bot[edit]

I changed usernames for the bot. All edits will be made under VFD Bot. In addition, in regards to your watchlist comment, I have an idea for a bot that can do something like that. We could place it at User:VFD Bot/All where it would take all the days listed on VFD, change the transincludes to subst: and update it... every 15 minutes? -- AllyUnion (talk) 05:16, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

VfD grunt work[edit]

You asked at WP:AN about VfD. Certainly, you can handle any nomination that doesn't end in delete. And it would be a great help. In fact, consistently helping to close keepers is a good way to get nominated for adminship, if that's what you want. (Worked for me!)

Hey, Dbenbenn, I have a question for you regarding the VfD notices. I've noticed a couple of times that other people blank VfD notices on VfD articles without going through the deletion process. Although the discussion result is keep, should I drop a polite note to the author not to do it again, or should I just let it slide because the article is kept anyway? So far, I've just assumed good faith and not dropped a message (because the blanking is usually done after the five day VfD period), but what's the standard procedure for matters such as this? Transwiki[edit]

We're not in charge of ensuring that stuff is transwikied. Just close the debate, add it to transwiki log, and add one of the appropriate templates: (Might be best to leave VFD tag or a link to VFD discussion)

Mussolini[edit]

Hi, on Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion you nominated two pictures of Benito Mussolini to be deleted since they now can be found at Commons. However, somebody on Commons has tagged them to be deleted there too, since they are not verified PD or GFDL. It is possible that Italy follows a EU copyright directive that means that the copyright is owned by the photographer, lifetime + 70 years. The two Mussolini pictures were first uploaded to Wikipedia by User:J.J. who, in my view, has made several careless uploads before. If you have time you can take a look at Commons:Benito Mussolini. I added {{permission}} to {{gymnast ru image}}. If Avsenev accepts the GFDL, you should change it to {{GFDL}}, and write a few sentences at {{gymnast ru}} indicating that. Hi, I'd like to take you up on your offer of nominating me for administrator status, BUT only if you think there is a reasonable prospect of success. The reason I delayed in responding was that I was waiting to hear from Wile E Heresiarch, who had offered first (in a roundabout sort of way). I should mention that, in the end, Wile reconsidered his offer. He felt that because the bulk of my recent activity was on Talk: and Wikipedia: namespace pages, that this might become an issue, the Admin promotion process being rather fickle. He did say he would support my nomination, but he was uncomfortable making the nomination himself if its success was in doubt. I have a bit less than 3000 edits, including about 700 main article space edits, but it is true that my interest since January has been more in the "information architecture" and policy of Wikipedia than in article content. I would be very willing to help out with VfD/Old and merges. It would be a bit ironic if someone who was actually nore interested in the admin side of things would be disqualified on that basis, but Wikipedia is an odd place. I'll be happy to nominate you right now. I honestly don't know whether you'll "pass", though. It's up to you. (See Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Fvw and Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Fvw2 for what sometimes happens when a nomination fails.)

Alternatively, if you want to wait about three weeks, I have two suggestions that might improve your chances. First, remember to always give a good edit summary. Some people who vote at WP:RFA care about that. And second, you can start closing old keeps and merges at WP:VFD/Old. We just lost User:AllyUnion, who did a lot of VfD work, so it would be terribly helpful. And a few weeks of consistently doing that will demonstrate the need for admin abilities.

My current desire to become an admin is somewhere between little and none.

I don't want my recent closing of VfD discussions to look like a blatant attempt at campaigning for a nomination, as opposed to the emergency catch-up in /Old that they were.
I'm not at all interested in the enforcement side of things. (Though when the Mediawiki bug is fixed, I might be interested in resurrecting Fvw's OpenProxyBlockerBot.)
I think it's likely that my bid would fail, probably rather spectacularly, due to an unpleasant juxtaposition of my strong deletionist tendencies and the fact that (as noted on my user page) my article-namespace contributions are subtrivial.
I'm trying to cut down on my presence here, not increase it. :)

Standard Model Chart[edit]

You really think we should use Image:std_model.png, instead of Image:standardmodel.png, because of the higher resolution? I changed to the lower resolution so the image when viewed in a browser would be a better viewing size... If so, we need to take std_model.png off of the deletion list and put the other smaller one on possibly? (by User:Rmrfstar at 02:35, 10 Mar 2005)

At the image description pages, Wikipedia thumbnails both images to the same size. I think the highest resolution should always be kept—you might need the extra resolution when printing, for example. And the text in the higher resolution version is easier to read. One thing you could do is upload the lower resolution with the same name as the higher resolution one. Hi Paddu. From skimming that page, it doesn't appear you've come to any conclusions. You didn't end up making a competing template, did you? As far as Go, see Rules of Go, which now uses {{Go board 5x5}}. I haven't made a 19 by 19 Go template yet: I'm frightened by the prospect of 361 parameters!

Hey come on, I'm not competing (as in opposing, etc.) with you. I just made a suggestion. If you like this syntax:

I'm sure the above syntax is much better than your one-line-full-of-pipes-and-chess-pieces syntax. If you feel some variant would be better I might be able to help on how that could be achieved. Note that in the above the underscores could be replaced with spaces. Also note that we would like to support squares with highlight, an X mark, etc. These are what are indicated by cells like |Nhi|, |_x|, etc. HTH.

BTW if you want a "competing" implementation, see User:Sverdrup/test4.

Well, I suppose you should use an alternate template that ignores parameter 1, uses parameters 2..9 for the topmost row, ignores parameter 10, uses parameters 11..18 for the next row, ignores parameter 19, and so on, e.g. User:Sverdrup/test3. That gives a cleaner syntax, without the need for HTML comment tricks. Note that apart from the 64 parameters for the squares and the 9 ignored parameters for convenient syntax, named parameters for size, etc. have to be standardised. Probably "caption" can also be a parameter in the template. Probably there could be separate templates with & without caption. Wikipedia:WikiProject Chess seems to be dead, so probably the place to ask for ideas before the template could be standardised is WP:VP. Just so you know, I and apparently some others disagree with AllyUnion about GRider's get-out-the-vote efforts. Hi there! Yes, I am aware that G/Rider's efforts to keep high schools aren't necessarily 'vote stacking' or illegal or anything. However, you must admit that they're unusual, and I do believe that were it used on any topic that's less controversial than high schools, people would disapprove.

Anyway, VfD isn't really about voting (although it often seems to be), but instead it's about discussion to form a consensus. On that ground, I've asked G/Rider if he would consider seeking consensus in another way. I have no intention to go to RfC over this, don't worry.

Hiya, Dbenbenn, I simply downloaded that Chuck Two image from the web, unfortunately, and cropped off an unwanted bit in Photoshop (that's why it's a .png, on account of the cropping). I'm pretty sure this is where I got him from: http://www.royal.gov.uk/files/images/charles-II_lrg.jpg, though there are other versions out there. Pages on royalty aren't an interest of mine, but Raul mentioned on IRC that he intended to feature Charles II soon, so I asked if he really wanted to disfigure the Main Page with the grotty BW image in that article (it's a mystery to me why people would pick the worst available image for their Featured article, Main Page or not, but perhaps there's some system to it). Anyway, predictably, Raul said {{sofixit}}, so I did, and he held off locking the template till I was done. But if it's nice high-res homemade scans in general that you're after, you could do worse than check out Image:Country Wife 1st ed 1675.png and Image:Country Wife 1675 cast.png, that my kid made the other day from a facsimile edition of Wycherley's The Country Wife, for an article I'm working on. A tip[edit]

If you want to protect an image on the main page that is from commons, you don't have to upload it to en; just make an edit to the "go to commons" page and then protect it. See Image:Cannabisbud.jpg for an example. The only people who can upload it now are admins. →Raul654 05:21, Mar 16, 2005 (UTC)

That isn't quite right. A vandal could still log in at the Commons and upload a new image there. It isn't clear how likely it is that anyone would think of that, but why take chances? Marshall {foo}[edit]

As far as I know, the Wikipedia style is to leave titles out of article names, so it's Ronald Reagan, not President Ronald Reagan, and George Marshall, not General George Marshall or Secretary George Marshall. I looked all over to see if this was written down, starting at Wikipedia:Naming conventions, but no luck; I've posted a query at the talk page, to get this clarified. Lossless cropping[edit]

I couldn't get the cropping patches to jpegtran to work, so no. I use GraphicConverter. But i do use jpegtran -optimize before i upload jpg's to the wiki. It's amazing how much space that saves sometimes. It's good to know my obsessive behavior doesn't go unnoticed. Foobaz·o< 20:23, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Cerro de la Silla[edit]

Hi Spangineer,

I love your photo of Cerro de la Silla. I decided to push it to the Commons as Commons:Image:Cerro de la Silla.jpg. The main benefit of uploading to the Commons is that the image can now be used on other language editions of Wikipedia, and on the sister projects. For example, it might eventually find its way to es:Monterrey.

I notice you multi-license your contributions with Creative Commons licenses. Perhaps you could go to Commons:Image:Cerro de la Silla.jpg and add {{cc-by-sa-2.0}} there? (I just want to be absolutely sure you intend this picture to be multilicensed.)

I can answer my own question. I think that extra space in the template introduces extra space in the article. So, sorry!

Norwegian coats of arms[edit]

Norwegian coats of arms are specifically not under copyright by Norwegian law. That is exactly why we've used the insignia marking. We've in fact spent considerable time discussing on the commons, and investigating (including asking a specialist Norwegian lawyer). If you object to the deletion, then what will happen is that the images on en: will remain orphans, and Wikipedia will waste a few kilobytes of storage. If they are public domain, you should simply tag them as such. The "insignia" tag specifically says

These restrictions are independent of the copyright status of the depiction shown here.

According to Norwegian law, their use is restricted, so they are not in public domain per se. In for instance the US, I guess they may be treated as public domain, I don't know. There was a long discussion on the commons, the outcome of which was that these arms were encouraged there. The Template:coatofarms on en: has a more suitable wording, btw. The permission from Ralf Hartemink is for copying from his collection, for which, according to some jurisdictions at least, a copyright may exist. GFDL versus CC[edit]

Oh, he's so gorgeous! Is that your work? Now imagine him at 25, galloping handsomely through the French countryside with secret depeches to William of Orange tucked inside his frilly shirt, ignominiously captured, but, nothing daunted, tunnelling out of the Bastille with a spoon! That all really happened (bar the spoon itself). Seriously, I love this version, the brightness and rosiness. It looks great. Mind you, it might not be a lot like the original looks today, but I bet it looks like the original when freshly painted.

Btw, do you have this info on the portrait itself? It's on display at the NPG, and they give the approximate date as circa 1704-1710 (i. e. he's 40-45 years old).
