Colchester[edit]

I hope you enjoy Colchester which was on my commuter route when I used to commute into London from BSE (where I still live). I am glad you won the election but sadly missed the chance to vote --BozMo|talk 06:05, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

BSE? Maybe that page needs further disambiguating. Unless you really were commuting from the Bombay Stock Exchange. Angela. 18:44, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Nice meeting you in Paris[edit]

Hi Angela. It was nice meeting you in Paris. I hope you make a safe trip back to England. As i told you, I am working on a book about wikis. So, if you can provide me with contacts of wiki users, especially in but not limited to the corporate world, that would be really helpful. Thanks again, and see you soon ! AllyGator

Wikipedians by religion[edit]

Angela,

Sometime please have a look at WikiPedians by Religion. In common with most Anglicans, the Church of England statutes and official the Church of England website [What it means to be an Anglican] I believe the Anglican church to be a Catholic Church upholding the Catholic faith. I have convinced a succession of Roman Catholic (who are 20 time more common at WikiPedia than Anglicans) to try to get what "Catholic" means to 70 million Anglicans included at en but each one goes off and another arrives. Now on Meta they keep listing me as a Protestant which I object to rather strongly. Am I not free to say what my religion is? --BozMo|talk 10:04, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Angela, Actually I did not ask for your opinion on the nature of the CoE. I asked you to do what a proper arbitrator should do: look at the facts and then decide. I have said that the CofE declares itself in statute and on website to be Catholic. I also as a practicising Anglican believe it to be Catholic. What I would like you to do (if your opinion) or obtain (if someone else's) is say why we should describe the CofE as Protestant. I know that every Roman Catholic document ever written says it was Protestant & founded by Henry VIII but everything it writes about itself says the opposite (and founded by Elizabeth I). I know it welcomes protestants and is in communion with some protestant as well as Catholic Churches but that isn't the same as being Protestant. --BozMo|talk 13:19, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Okay, I am happy to ask BCorr and have left him a message. However, if you aren't happy to get involved or read the reply I posted to Toby Bartels could you reverse your own change to the list in favour of my neutral one (Anglicans listed as neither Protestant nor Catholic) until he has reached a conclusion. As I said I don't have much hope in a general NPOV position on Catholicism but I think this particular request isn't unreasonable. BTW do you like Colchester? --BozMo|talk 15:52, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Bureaucratizing at Ru[edit]

Dear Angela,

sorry for personal request, but could you please check meta:Request for permissions page in relation to turning me into Bureaucrat on Ru.Wikipedia? We at Ru.Wikipedia have discussed turning another participant into Sysop, and I claimed that if there won't be objections, he will became Sysop on 13:00, 6 Jul 2004 (i.e. in 2 minutes after now...). There were no objections, but I now found that I don't have Bureaucraut status... Thank you! Drbug 12:58, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thank you very much! Everything works fine this time! [[User:Drbug|Drbug 13:26, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Request for mediator[edit]

A few days ago, AndyL listed a request on the Wikipedia:Requests for mediation page between User:WHEELER and himself:

see Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User:WHEELER and associated TALK page. Specific complaint about his anti-Semitic comment on Talk:Early_National_Socialism but also about his general conduct around POV editing and unencyclopedic behaviour. AndyL 05:31, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)

After discussing the matter with sannse, it seems that the first step is to identify one or more members of the committee who are willing to mediate in this case, although before proceeding it will be necessary to clarify the goals of the mediation.

And just FYI, there has also been quite a bit of chatter on the WikiEN mailing list about similar issues.

If you are willing to act as the mediator in this case, please leave a brief note stating so at Wikipedia:Requests_for_mediation#User:AndyL_and_User:WHEELER. The more people who are willing to mediate, the better, as this will provide more options for the two users to try to agree on.

Thanks, BCorr 18:26, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia the right place for FAQs?[edit]

Angela. You've helped me before, so I hope you can help me again by answering my question: Can Wikipedia host (...) FAQ documents? I know it's possible, technically, of course. But will these documents be too long? I've tried to get this question answered by looking at the official help documents, but...

The FAQ in question is the FAQ for Iron Maiden, a FAQ I've been responsible for keeping updated since 1998. Toreau

Admin powers[edit]

I noticed you removed what may be considered criticism of you and other trustees from m:What we use the money for. HC

It's not criticism. It was a non-factual statement. A

Since that page was protected, I feel that may have been questionable use of your admin powers on meta. HC

Firstly, I want to say that at the time I made the edit I didn't notice the page was even protected. I noticed it afterwards but saw from the talk page that it was only protected against vandalism, not from normal edits, so I didn't think there was any issue.
Secondly, I disagree that this was in any way an abuse of power. It wasn't protected as the result of an edit war, but because it was a high-visibility target, like the Main Page. Is the editing of that by admins regarded an abuse of power? No, it's not - protection from vandalism and non-trusted edits are is very different from protection due to a dispute. Also, meta has a different protection policy than the English Wikipedia. Many pages are protected over there simply because there are far fewer admins, so there is less chance vandals can be easily reverted or blocked. Pre-emptive protection is far more common, and editing of these pages by any admins is not unusual. We even give out temporary adminships very liberally for the specific purpose of allowing users to edit specific protected pages. All the financial pages, for example, remain protected, and during the elections Danny and Imran were given partial adminship so they could protect and edit the pages about the elections. A

Furthermore, you never discussed the change on the talk page. HC

I didn't think it needed discussing. I have nothing more to say that what I said in my edit summary. The statement that we use donations to send people to France is blatantly untrue and misleading. A

Please consider reverting your removal of my comments, and discussing the matter on the talk page with the community before acting. (cross-posted to m:User talk:Angela) --H. CHENEY 19:35, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)

If you have a problem with the page as it stands, please suggest changes to it. A
Dear HCheney -- you have made a very strong allegation here -- basically claimimg that a Wikimedia board member has abused her administrative powers by removing criticism of her from a protected page. The short answer (which you absolutely should have investigated before adding to a page that is linked to from every single en:Wikipedia page!) is that the money was not used for that, so this was simply a factual change, and if you look at the m:meta:Protection log you'll see that it was protected because of vandalism. A number of individuals made earmarked contributions which covered the travel cost, including me (I gave $15.00 out of my own pocket) -- in fact, the total donations made were almost the exact amount of Angela's train fare, and she paid for her own accommodations. BCorr|Брайен 20:06, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks Brian for explaining that. A

I feel an admin removing criticism (valid criticism or not) about herself from a protected page, without discussion, is a very serious issue. HC
It's not criticism, it's just untrue. I have not violated any policy. A
This question should be addressed regardless of the esteem you hold the said administrator in. I have made no attempt to draw attention to what I see as questionable conduct on Angela's behalf, and hope that this matter can be resolved discreet and friendly manner. In so far as my comment, I feel that donors need to be aware that the trustees plan on spending funds on more than servers, software development, salaries, and bandwidth. HC
Again, this is untrue. Where have any of the trustees ever said money raised from ordinary donation drives, like the one happening today, would go towards expenses? If any of my expenses had come from the Foundation, rather than individual pledges, it would have come from award money, not from donation money. I can't understand where you have got the idea that this is not the case. A
There are serious corporate governance issues and concerns that still need to be addressed by the trustees and the Wikimedia Foundation. --H. CHENEY 20:30, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Can you explain how you think removing untrue statements from that page is a governance issue? A
I'm sorry -- perhaps you missed my point. Wikimedia Foundation money was not spent on travel. The statement was factually inaccurate -- that does not make it an "invalid criticism." Thanks, BCorr|Брайен 20:49, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)
The foundation was used as a fundraising conduit for the travel expenses. It was all over the foundation listserv. HC
I don't see what the Foundation has to do with any of this. Danny sent an email to a public mailing list suggesting expenses should be paid, then Cimon said he would donate specifically for this. Others kindly followed his idea. Where exactly do you think the Board members were soliciting funds through the mailing list? A
Did the funds go through the foundation's account? No. Was the fundraising a de facto foundation effort, utilizing foundation servers, to fund travel on foundation business, for a foundation trustee? Yes. The statement, from your point of view, was "factually inaccurate." Others may disagree with you. HC
If a fundraising effort was made by the Foundation, I must have somehow missed it. If there had been any sort of fundraising for this, I hope we would have raised significantly more than £100! A
Nonetheless, even if it was a boldfaced lie, Angela should not have been the admin to remove the criticism. She should have referred the matter to a neutral admin. Administrators, in theory, have no more power than the regular user, just more responsiblity. A regular user could not instantly remove critic's comments from a protected page. --H. CHENEY 21:04, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but I don't regard edits to improve the accuracy of a page anything to do with power. A
As an objective 3rd party I can't help think that one of the most important things about wiki is to introduce the website to others and to widen the sphere of users through intergrating our systems with that of other countries. If this should mean that somebody, nah, someone from the board of trusties for instance, should travel elsewhere in order to do this, surely the cost is justifiable in the spirit of the site. The cost these days of travelling somewhere such as France is insignificant when compared to the number of hours some people spend contributing to the venture that is wikipedia and no doubt the invaluable public relations obtained while on wiki business. This website is not simply about people writing and editing articles - surely it is about enabling a free source of invaluable knowledge to those who yearn to access it - if, in the tireless efforts of some, this incurs a minor cost (note the point about Angela self funding some of it) then surely this is a small price to pay for the benefits of supporting and intergrating with other wiki users europe (or world) wide and no doubt widening the wiki world, thus increasing the encyclipedic capabilities of the site - is that such a bad thing?? Helen. 21:23, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)
"Objective 3rd party"? cough. :) A

To conclude I just want say that the statement added by Hcheney to the page, which stated donor money would be spent on "Travel expenses for a trustee meeting in Paris" are not at all true and I can't see a problem with this line being removed. Angela. 23:25, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)

There are three subjects being discussed: your adminship actions, my comment, and our fundamental disagreement in Wikimedia policy. The latter is irrelevant, we can agree to disagree on policy issues. You have claimed that Meta has different adminship and protection policies then en:. I looked for this policy, but all I could find was m:Administrator, which directed me to en's Administrator policies. Where does it state, directly or indirectly, that Meta admins are permitted to fundementally change the content of protected pages without discussion? --H. CHENEY 01:29, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)
What Wikimedia policy? There are no policies yet, so I fail to see how you can think we would disagree on them. Regarding protected page policy on meta, this is implied by the text on m:Meta:Requests for adminship which explains how adminship is given out for anyone needing to work on protected pages - which shows that a page being protected is not meant as something to stop non-vandals working on it. That page also explains the policy for gaining adminship there. The policy doesn't need to say that admins are allowed to change the pages. The lack of a policy stating the opposite and the fact we give out adminship purely so people can edit protected pages implies that editing of them is, of course, allowed. As for your implication that I fundamentally changed the content of that page - I disagree; I removed one factually wrong sentence. I have explained why it was wrong and you have not suggested any reason it should have stayed there. Angela. 01:40, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)
As for the sentence being factually wrong, I have already addressed that above. However, I do not feel as so strongly to insist on its inclusion. However, even if from your own point of view you feel the sentence was factually wrong, I believe you were the wrong admin to remove the sentence. Would you be willing to agree not to remove other user's criticism (factual or disputed) of you from protected pages, and instead requesting another admin to remove it to avoid a conflict of interest? If you can agree, I would consider this matter done and over with. --H. CHENEY 01:59, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)
It's certainly not my intention to violate policy, so yes, of course I agree not to do that. Angela 03:16, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Move Danzig[edit]

Can you help? You seem to have watched the debate and unprotected Gdansk. I am trying to move Danzig to Danzig (disambiguation) (and failing for some unknown reason) so that Danzig can redirect to Gdansk - I have added a suitable line to the top of Gdansk which I hope will survive more than a few minutes. --Henrygb 21:57, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for your quick response on my talk page. I can edit both Danzig and Danzig (disambiguation) so if I cannot move the page, I can still cut-and-paste (and lose the edit history). If I move the page, someone can move it back and nothing has been lost. --Henrygb 22:49, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Protection policy[edit]

Thanks for catching that page protection situation. I was actually moving to do precisely as you asked when I saw your message on my talk page. I had forgotten to do it when I originally protected the page. David Newton 12:00, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Angela, why did you protect Frankfurt School on a version vandalized by Herschelkrustofsky? Adding Lyndon LaRouche to this page as a serious critic constitutes blatant vandalism. It should be treated as such, not as an edit war. 172 12:42, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Requesting copyright-free images[edit]

Hi, Angela

As you know, requesting copyright-free images from musea or institutions isn't easy. As I'm working on Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods and I'm writing biographies of famous malacologists, I send often emails to such musea, using the boilerplate text: request for an image. Most of the time I don't even get an answer, which makes me think there must be something wrong with the boilerplate text, such as not stressing the growing importance of Wikipedia, Wikipedia being used as a reference etc. On the other hand, requesting a picture from the Te Papa Museum, Wellington, New Zealand , I got this answer :

Thank you for your email.

We have had a discussion at this end and we certainly see Wikipedia as a very interesting project.

Unfortunately the terms of supply required by Wikipedia contravene Te Papa's terms and conditions as they currently stand: [3]

Te Papa considers every image request on a case-by-case basis. This is to ensure that image use is in line with the principles of Te Papa. While we would be happy to supply images for use in your article we do not want to lose control of any further use of these images. If you can see anyway around this problem I would certainly we open to any suggestions you may have.

Best wishes

I wonder if we can get around this problem. They don't want to lose control over their images. I think I know of a solution, but I don't know if it is within the GNU License.

 • There are on the Internet patches to invalidate the right mouse-button. Downloading becomes impossible, but you can still print the page
 • In Dreamweaver they use snippets, little programs that you can use as you wish. In this case, I would propose that the image, on mouse-over or left-clicking, comes up as a pop-up (which, again so, cannot be downloaded). But I do not know if this is possible within Wikipedia. Perhaps work for a programmer ?

This way, the copyright holder would still remain in control of the image. But is this still within GNU Free Documentation License ? JoJan 16:04, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Bureaucrat problem on sr:[edit]

Thanks for giving me bureaucrat permissions. But, I have a problem: my Special:Makesysop page says "The action you have requested can only be performed by sysops with "bureaucrat" status.". Angela, why did you protect Frankfurt School when no request to protect it was made at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection? I have removed page protection since proper procedure was not followed.AndyL 01:08, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Excuse me? Proper procedure was not followed? Could you explain how it was not? Firstly, it was listed at Requests for page protection. Secondly, there is nothing in the protection policy that states page must be there before protection anyway. Considering the edit war was involving yourself, you are the one out of line with regards to the policy in unprotecting a page with which you were clearly involved. Angela. 01:15, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

My mistake, I checked the history of Requests for page protection and found no mention of a request to protect that page. I must have missed it. AndyL 01:22, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

In any case, I suggest that it is in wikipedia's interest to protect the less (or un) controversial version of the article, particularly since there is a complaint that Hershell's habit of inserting pro-LaRouche propaganda throughout wikipedia constitutes vandalism. AndyL 01:25, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

It's not vandalism as defined by Wikipedia:Dealing with vandalism. Angela. 01:39, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Problem on Serbian Wikipedia[edit]

Huh. New admin (sr:User:Avala) is dangerous with admin permissions. He deleted about 30 pages because he don't like them and blocked proxy server (for two weeks) for all of Academic Network of Serbia (147.91.1.41 is proxy for between 1.000 and 5.000 computers). It would be very good to remove his permissions. Please, use my my English talk page (or your own talk page) for communication --Millosh 16:28, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Just to add reason for blocking user (i.e. all of academic network) and translation:

Serbian: писање текстова који нису у складу са стилом енциклопедије. дајем 2 недеље за размишљање и препоруку да погледа и неке друге бикипедије да схвати о чему се ради
English: writting texts wich are not in harmony with style of encyclopedia. i am givinig 2 weeks for thinking as well as suggestion to see other wikipedias and to see what i am talking --Millosh 16:49, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thank you. I want to say that I would make the same think as you did: As bureaucrat, I would give him sysop because he asked for this and I was the only admin on sr:... I didn't know that he had wanted to do that. (And some of people thought that I did that...) I think we would have more admins and bureaucrats very soon. Nikola Smolenski (in Serbian Никола Смоленски) is active on Wikipedia for a log time, but he didn't want to ask for permissions. Now, it is more easy because all of our basic needs can be written in Serbian. --Millosh 17:50, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I got your mail :-) I'll reply to you today. --Millosh 18:20, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

At the admin page on sr: you can see (translation in English) what do I think about Avala's adminship. I want to give him admin permissions, but after one month. He is working (except his very restrictive behavior) good. As I don't think that he would pass now, I think I would give to him permissions in a month. I hope that he would not be so restrictive then, but... Maybe I would ask you again for the same action. --Millosh 18:00, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Serbian Wikipedia[edit]

We don't have page "votes for deletion". I'll make it soon. --Millosh 15:10, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Even this page doesn't have enough sense (Latin namespace, Cyrillic text), we have (not only in this moment; in general, it is Serbian political problem) discussion about use of Latin alphabet. In this moment Serbs use 50:50 Cyrillic and Latin alphabet. One place (anywhere: on Internet or in real life) is Cyrillic or Latin only because at that place in that moment there are more pro-Cyrillic or pro-Latin people. I am using Cyrillic alphabet, but I know that Serbian Wikipedia has to have it's Latin pages. And the most of people in Serbia think like me or analogue (they use Latin, but they relise that Cyrillic alphabet is also important). But, the most active people in that field are those who want only Cyrillic or only Latin alphabet. --Millosh 15:10, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

At the page sr:Расправа о писмима на српској Википедији I started discussion and voting about use of Latin alphabet. At the end of August we would have some decision. If we include Latin pages, we would have some more or less coplex needs from developers. This means that "Vikipedija:" would be right namespace in Latin alphabet. So, I would like not to delete this article until we would make decision about use of alphabets on Serbian Wikipedia. --Millosh 15:10, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

And about your name in Serbian. Transliteration of your name is Ангела. Literar transcription is Ејнџела. But, we have your name in Serbian and it is Анђела /andjela/. When I was talking about you, I used transliteration, but the last choice is the best :-) --Millosh 15:10, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Also, Avala promised that he would not be so restrictive in the future. He is working well. (I told to him to translate pages from Meta about resolving conflicts and I think he learned how to use his "power".) I want to give back to Avala admin permissions. I just need to talk with other bureaucrat, Nikola Smolenski about that. We would have four admins/bureaucrats and I think that there is no danger anymore. I hope I'll not ask you again to remove his permissions. --Millosh 15:10, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. :) Анђела 16:04, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Anđela is your name in Serbian (and Croatian and Bosniak/Bosnian and Montenegrin) in Latin alphabet. Except Croats, others use Cyrillic, too. (I hope you know that differences between those four (five with "extinct" Serbo-Croatian) languages are only political :-) ) --Millosh 16:42, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Bold "edit this page"[edit]

Hello, I was wondering if you know about any way to make it so "edit this page" does not show up bold for me. (I noticed that you were the one who changed it on MediaWiki talk:Monobook.css#Encouraging newcomers) I think its a good idea in general, so I don't want to make an objection or complaint, but would like to change it back just for myself. siroχo 19:33, Jul 21, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the help, that worked perfectly. And thanks for the compliment of my talk page (: siroχo 20:12, Jul 21, 2004 (UTC)

Substubs: What do you think?[edit]

I think that I've created something that may be controversial: substubs. I saw a reference to it on Wikipedia:Find or fix a stub, so I decided to make its existence official. The page I created is Wikipedia:substub, and the boilerplate message that I created is Template:substub. The whole idea is that a substub is even smaller than a normal stub, and must be treated accordingly. I was just wondering what you thought of the idea (but please read Wikipedia:substub first!), because you're a member of the Board of Trustees (so I respect you) and you seem so active with everything to do with stubs. Do you think I've created a monster, or is it a great idea? By the way, I've read some of your criticisms (11 archives!) and I just wanted you to know that I think you're doing a great job. Isn't it nice to have encouragement? -- Mike Storm 20:05, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I agree, Wikipedia:Shortpages does indeed list what are usually considered substubs. However, not many people actually go to Wikipedia:Shortpages. But if someone sees the boilerplate message substub at the bottom of a page then it practically shouts, "Hey! This page need to be fixed and expanded!" Try comparing how many people edit the pages listed on Wikipedia:Shortpages to how many people see that message and directly edit the page from there. My point (if I'm being unclear): a lot more people will see that boilerplate message than will go to the Wikipedia:Shortpages page. That's why substubs are necessary.
I'm also copying what you posted on my talk page and my reply (this message) to Wikipedia talk:substub, because the topic of substubs is still an open discussion. I hope you don't mind, but feel free to delete it if you do. Mike Storm (Talk) 20:17, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Go ahead. I don't mind. Angela 20:23, Jul 22, 2004 (UTC)
By the way, if you do indeed support substubs (I'm not really sure whether you do or not), then can you please add your name to this list? I'd really appreciate it, but only sign if you really think that it's a good idea. If you have more arguments against it, I think that I've answered most of them on the Village Pump and on Wikipedia talk:substub. Thanks! Mike Storm (Talk) 20:33, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I saw your addition of User:TheCustomOfLife and the related talk page.

I believe that referencing IRC discussion to justify such actions is, generally, inappropriate, because the IRC is not logged and no one can go look and see what was actually said. Therefore, such references can lead to misunderstandings. Perhaps next time you might encourage the affected user to make a request on WP:RFPP as well as bringing up the matter on IRC. Also, I will move your comment to the proper section shortly.

On a related note, I believe you and I are in agreement that widespread use of page protection on user pages is a bad thing. I have begun a campaign of unprotecting user pages where there is no recent history of vandalism. I belive this is important, because protection of user pages of favored users undermines the egalitarian nature of the project. I expect there will be some criticism of these moves and hope you will provide some support when, inevitably, the criticism comes.

Best regards

UninvitedCompany 20:36, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Angela,
Thank you for the reply.
Perhaps I am oversensitive to use of IRC references. It is a growing trend and I'm not sure that I like it much.
I was not trying to be critical of the page protection itself for "Custom," which I hope was clear. I checked the history myself earlier and believed it was justified.
Someday, we'll probably have to require AOL proxy users to log in because of the problems created by blocking AOL proxies. I think that we should a) quit using the autoblocker, b) allow logged-in users to edit even if editing from a blocked IP, partly in preparation from that day, which is coming. Edit bug[edit]

I think that you fixed it. By the way, how do you customize your signature (you know, ~~~~)? Can you do that? I think that I've seen some custom signatures before somewhere. -- Mike Storm 23:57, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

New language version sister project[edit]

Hi. You are always very helpful, and I noticed that you participated in setting of WikiSource. Do you know of any sort of step-by-step guide (in English) to what must be done to set up a WikiSource in a new language? I imagine the people who have done it so far must have found technical help somewhere. If you know of any documentation, please let me know! Thanks, Dovi 14:55, Jul 22, 2004 (UTC)

Alphabet for Serbian[edit]

I have heard that the difference between the Latin orthography and the Cyrillic orthography is algorithmic. If that is the case, why not let one's preferred script be set in "Set preferences"? Juuitchan 22:38, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Pic of the day[edit]

Ah yes indeed I do agree... somewhat. But on my screen (big, easy to read 20 pt text) it shows up as perhaps three paragraphs would in your (teeny tiny, need glasses to read it) text. Perhaps we can find a compromise, and finally put a end to this cross-Atlantic (+ Pacific + Asia/America) feud. 16 pt text might be ok. Or perhaps a separate POD with no text at all? The hot summer of partisan warfare is ended; I declare this fall to be a season of compromise. :) -Stevertigo

We dont have to specify a font size; simply use a standard font size to gauge how much text should be in the box. ? Stevertigo
We could do a Wikipedia:Quickpoll I suppose; (this wouldnt be perfect: screen resolutions vary from below standard 72 to over 90 and up) but within the context of the box, the text size is all we need to know. Im guessing that 16-17 pt type isnt uncommon, but also that most people dont override their web page settings anyway. I would say that 2 paragraphs was too much, while a little is just right. Less is more perhaps - I dont mean less work, but less text. ;) Stevertigo
Why not a real WP:QP? But anyway, all they would need to answer is "for the POTD (one specific day)" does the text show taller or smaller than the picture? If text is taller, by how many lines?" -Stevertigo
Ah. Quickpolls discontinued. Got it. -Stevertigo

Protected logo image at nl[edit]

I did not noticed that before because i am a sysop. But now i have done some testing, also whit a non-sysop account. It is true that you do not can write over a protected image. But you can change it back to a previous version and so change it. A possible solution is deleting the history so there is nothing to change it back to. Walter 23:16, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Time[edit]

Tried to stick CURRENTTIME in the same line as the text on Template:Fromwikipedia, justified right. Just an idea, but I dont know the proper string, and the table wont stay at the top anyway. -SV

The idea is to get the UTC handy, (maybe local too) rather than having to check RC for it. Maybe just for userpages? What's the UTC where you're at? -Stevertigo

Desysop[edit]

Hello Angela, I am de:Benutzer:Sansculotte, Administrator and Bureaucrat on the german Wikipedia. Would you be so kind and desysop me? Quote[edit]

ThinkWhat: Wikipedia:Quote.-SV

People cant be everywhere, and WP has gotten a bit more compartmentalized. As it should - its growing. Discussions, debates, issues, points can often be boiled down to a quotable. So if Zoe says on IRC "I think monkeys are fantastic" then that could be quoted on the template, which could draw people to that discussion, or at least then they would know that Zoe thinks monkeys are fantastic. "Which monkeys?" for the extra POTD, BTW. Ill take over if you get too busy. -SV

Being in charge if you don't know the language[edit]

How can you be in charge of Wikipedias of which you don't know the language? I don't get it. I would guess that most or all of what you do could be done by a bot. --Juuitchan

What languages do you write in, anyway? --J
Do you sleep?! Ms. Overachiever, you are multilingual and have myriads of edits and have that job making national tests and you work with dyslexics -- not to mention, from your picture, you look like a model -- I just don't know what to make of it. I ENVY YOU. --Juuitchan

Thanks for your work on mediation[edit]

Hello Angela. I just wanted to thank you for your excellent work on the Mediation Committee pages. I'm back, but my editing is going to be a bit restricted for a few more days as I don't have access to a computer away from work at the moment. And I've done little editing on the requests page as it's rather difficult to keep up.... And perhaps you might be interested in being the next co-chair after my term or sannse's term is up? (I can't now remember which of us is stepping down first, but I believe it's sannse...)

Thanks again, Bcorr

Thanks but I think I may have too many roles already to be mediation co-chair as well. I'll do it if no one else wants to, but I expect there may be others on the committee who would be better suited for this. Angela 02:03, Jul 27, 2004 (UTC)

Unprotection[edit]

Hi Angela,

I'm wondering if you could consider unprotecting Frankfurt School? It's been protected for ten days now and Herschel has received no support on Talk:Frankfurt School while a few more people have voiced their preference for removing the LaRouche reference.

BTW, as for the mediation with WHEELER since he hasn't made any further comments that could be interpeted as Anti-Semitic I'm prepared to let the whole thing slide but I might revisit it if there are any futher occurances.

Thanks AndyL 01:04, 27 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Angela,

I tried editing a page called "H.323" and "H.225". The proper name for "H.225" is "H.225.0". I made the reference changes to the H.323 page, but I cannot seem to find a way to change the title of the page for "H.225". Can you tell me how to change "H.225" to "H.225.0", so that the references are correct?

You need to log in before you can move pages. It's easy to create an account - you just need to make up a username and password. No other information is needed. After that, you will see a "move this page" link at the top of almost every page which will let you change the title of a page. There's more info at Wikipedia:Why create an account? and Wikipedia:How to rename (move) a page. Angela 01:53, Jul 27, 2004 (UTC)

Printable pages[edit]

Hi, do you happen know how to link to a page in its printable version (for users who are not logged in) so that the left navigation bar is ommitted for clarity. This used to be possible with a parameter like '?printable=yes' added into the URL but no longer works with the new monobook stylesheet. Mervynl 09:00, Jul 27, 2004 (UTC

Thanks for your answer on this. Is there anyway to specify the css used in the referring URL? (I have an elearning application where I step users through various wikpedia and other pages, this worked much better before when I could switch off the navigation bar etc with "printable='yes'" Mervynl 15:00, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC)

Servers from Rackspace[edit]

Hey Angela,

I am currently attending OSCON 2004 in Portland OR, and I am going to be chatting to Dirk Elmendorf, chief technology evangelist and co-founder of Rackspace Managed Hosting about possible hardware donations. It was brought to my attention by a journalist from Linux Format magazine that Rackspace almost always has cutting edge servers, and thus they must dispose of a great deal of almost cutting edge hardware. If I get some positive response, I plan on referring him to Jimbo and the board for further discussion. Please respond to my talk page. Burgundavia 17:23, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC) aka Corey Burger

I would post this to the foundation-l, but seems to be dead right now? Anyway, I have been chatting at OSCON regarding WP, and have had some encouraging responses. I have, through a third party, heard that MySQL ab might be willing to do some work for us pro-bonno. Also, I chatted to Zend, the PHP company, so that might generate something. Burgundavia 23:00, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC)
On another note, I will post something to the various mailing lists at the end of OSCON 2004. Burgundavia 23:01, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC)

Hi, actually I put this up for peer review a couple of weeks ago here Wikipedia:Requests for comment but no-one has come along yet. Unfortunately this is an orthodox vs reform conflict. It is an article of Reform faith not to be interested in Jesus, while the orthodox view has always been that there was a respectable rabbi at the heart of the matter. The Nazarene Jews (Netzarim) are indisputably orthodox Jews and have been recognised by the board of the Orthodox Yemenite Beit K'nêsêt in Raanana, Israel – Beit ha-K'nêsêt Môrêshêt Âvôt (which is recognized by the Israeli rabbinate). This keeps them firmly lodged within the orthodox Jewish Beit Din system and they are thus recognised as an authoritative body by the state of Israel. Reform Jews just cant handle this fact. I accept that claiming they are a sect of Judaism is agitative, but to mention them as within Orthodox Judaism is a fundamental fact. As it is the highly detailed and researched article has been reduced to a stub with the phrase "who call themselves Jewish" slapping the face of what it means to be orthodox. If any group "call themselves Jewish" it is the reform movement. I would like to encourage a peer review of the situation as with the Yeshu article. Zestauferov 08:24, 31 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Guanaco2[edit]

This is a general question to those endorsing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Guanaco2. Is anyone prepared to actually certify the complaint along with RickK? If not, RfC policy would call for the page to be deleted soon. If I delete the listing for RickK (which seems likely at this point), I would like to either delete Guanaco's as well, or have a clear basis under existing policy for deleting one and not the other. --Michael Snow 20:11, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Guanaco is trying to get it deleted on the grounds that I'm the only person who has tried to discuss the issues with him. Would you be willing to indicate your discussions with him on the unblocking and/or unprotecting issue? Thanks. RickK 22:25, Aug 3, 2004 (UTC)
Well, the wording says:
"at least two people need to show that they tried to resolve a dispute with this sysop and have failed. This must involve the same dispute, not different disputes. The persons complaining must provide evidence of their efforts, and each of them must certify it by signing this page with ~~~~". RickK 22:54, Aug 3, 2004 (UTC).
At this point, Neutrality is in the certification section with RickK, since Neutrality seems willing to take that stand, and this hasn't been reverted yet. I'm not always sure I see the point in RfC either, except that it fills a void in our dispute resolution process, and it's as good a solution as we've been able to devise so far. --Michael Snow 23:05, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Yes, I realise Neutrality has certified it now so I guess it makes no difference that I haven't. Angela 23:06, Aug 3, 2004 (UTC)

Request for immediate removal[edit]

Angela, I hope you can help me.

I am trying desperately to find an admin who will delete my personal pages. I am quitting this project for good due to the fight to include a horrid, almost apologetic article on the subject of child pornography. In trying to make the article somewhat more neutral during the VfD period, I removed a number of external links and some horrendous photos, but left the text intact. User "Cecropia" accused me of "unilateral censorship" and reverted the edits. It seems that he's the one responsible for the photos and symbols in the first place, allegedly to prove a point. Others are crying "censorship" as well, although the consensus seems to be leaning toward "delete."

I've written "Tim Starling" in an effort to have the pages deleted, but I haven't received an answer. Please blank my pages at your earliest convenience and confirm the deletions on my personal e-mail account.

I appreciate your prompt assistance in this matter, and I thank you ahead of time for any help at all that you can give. - Lucky 6.9 22:09, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I've replied to you by email. Angela 22:49, Aug 3, 2004 (UTC)
Angela, since Lucky brought up my name: In the middle of a VfD, Lucky took it upon himself to unilaterally remove some images, evidently without reading the extensive talk on the subject. He became angered and cursed me (literally) and Wikipedia, and decided to quit the project, even though I had posted a link to further explain the importance of those pictures. -- Cecropia | Talk 22:18, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Angela, thanks again for the nice personal e-mail that you sent regarding my wish to have my pages deleted. I've blanked both pages and haven't received any more goodbye notes since. Please feel free to go ahead and permanently delete the pages. See you 'round the WWW. - Lucky 6.9 06:39, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)
The history of the pages is now gone. I re-added the link to missing wikipedians to prevent the page showing up as a red link. Angela 07:31, Aug 4, 2004 (UTC)
Perfectly fine. I really appreciate your help, but I appreciate your kindness even more. It's sad it had to come to this. Perhaps someday, who knows? In the meantime, please take care. Signing off for good, the former Lucky 6.9. - 4.16.254.59 07:54, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Did you know[edit]

Hi Angela, Don't think I've discussed anything with you before but just wondered how pages are chosen for the Did you know section on the front page. I've just written a brief rtcl on Anastasiya Kapachinskaya and find it bizarre that all three medallists from a major athletics event can all be suspended for failing drug tests and could that it could be an interesting did you know candidate. This along with Vita Pavlysh twice being stripped of the same title they are two of the most bizarre athletics stories that I have come across. I know they probably need some work or possibly need to be merged into a stupid athletes or suspended athletes rtcl. any comments appreciated. Scraggy4 23:07, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)

A Song of Ice and Fire (card Game) - I believe this is a candidate for speedy deletion. Total removal[edit]

Hi. I just happened to wander in and some anon numbskull who was posting vandalism just reopened my discussion page and vandalized it. TheCustomOfLife reverted it.

Could I impose on you to erase both pages for good? Thanks much, and I don't blame you for your current level of "wikistress." - Lucky 6.9 18:31, 6 Aug 2004 (UTC)

The red links are going to annoy people if there is no user page for you. The link to missing Wikipedians is the standard page given to people once they leave to prevent this. Secondary Serbian Wikipedia[edit]

Community on Serbian Wikipedia doesn't want to work on Latin project, too. If we are talking about copy-paste method, it can be a lot of job. But, the main reasons for that are political. And one more but: we need Latin pages for search engines at least. So, I have one possible solution. Secondary two-letter code for Serbian language is 'sp'. It would be good to make some engine for periodical (one per hour or one per 6 hours) transliteration from Cyrillic (sr) and Latin (sp) project. Latin pages would be "protected" by default. Is it possible and who is the person that I need to talk with about technical issues? --Millosh 06:29, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Fiend[edit]

Thanks for deleting Fiend. I was hoping a very well-respected admin would be the one to do it. I've been sticking with deleting just the more obvious cases, but that one was obnoxious enuf, and, coming from a page that's protected, likely to be problematic enuf, that I decided to try and get a better idea of just where the bar is. Niteowlneils 03:24, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Awesome. That's exactly what I had concluded was the most valid and compelling reason to just kill it--it didn't actually add anything to the dang 'pedia. The current Happy Noodle Boy (especially--lot of hits) and Melissa Carr CSDs are the sort I really don't feel comfortable deleting, although I suspect some admins do. There's no way I'd delete the k&r redirs that have been there for hours--for the most part I think the more redirs, the better--keeps articles from getting written in funky places, and gets people to what they're looking for. On the other hand, I have deleted two redirs (one tagged by someone else, once I just stumbled onto) in the last day or two because didn't accomplish either (or anything else, for that matter). Interlingue Wikipedia[edit]

Hi. I've started to translate the locale for Interlingue. But it doesn't work. All the interface remains English. What's the problem? What else shold I do with this locale? Sorry, if it was a stupid question. Dana

It's not a stupid question at all. :) I've replied at ie:User talk:Dana. Angela. 18:49, Aug 9, 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. But... You have a Developer status, don't you? Could you activate my static locale? It is faster than namespaces. Dana 19:42, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Latin?[edit]

You speak Latin? Really? I'm just guessing from the fact that you were a sysop on the Latin Wikipedia, so how did you learn so many languages (Arabic, etc)? I'm trying to learn Latin myself, and I'm wondering how long it took you to become fluent. MikeStorm 20:10, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

No Supadawg is not me! I expect the reason he is linking to my talk page in messages he leaves is beacuse he's taking my boilerplate text from User:Angela/useful stuff. A few people have done that. :) Angela. 18:13, Aug 10, 2004 (UTC)

Hindi Wikipedia[edit]

Angela, I made a number of changes to m:LanguageHi.php today. Then I saw that changes to namescape may override these. So I copied to http://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_namespace_text and then made changes to many of the items in it. Is it possible to modify this table to display the current values of the fields.

I find that to change the namespace takes longer as I have to do each item, one by one. Also, while the changes seem to be operational on some pages - eg. while editing a page, they seem to be displaying old versions when just viewing a pge.

Is it possible for you to put the updated LanguageHi.php in production and if there is translated text in the name space, which is not there in the .php file, then to copy it there.

Also, is it possible to correct the 'skin' definition. In Monobook, the top bar keeps floating left so I have to use an old version to have an operational page (this is on win98 using IE6).

Thanks fo all your help. You can leave a message on my member page at Hindi Wikipedia. hi:सदस्य वार्ता:Shree Shree 16:34, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Angela, Thanks for your suggestions. I replied on your user page in hi.wikipedia.org - do not know if you check that. So here is my new question :)
When using 4~s for signature, the month is coming in English - what do I need to do to fix this.
Also, I just read your user page - so if I need to address these 'minor' issues to someone else, please let me know.

Thanks. Re your remark, if I'd know what to expect, there would have been little point in posting the comment. It's just possible that I was exaggerating a wee bit, of course... Dpbsmith (talk) 00:21, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

List of albums[edit]

I see that you're an admin and you've recently edited List of albums. Something's gone desperately wrong on that page. All of the (voluminous) content disappeared with an edit by User:TUF-KAT on March 25, 2004. His previous edit that day had the cryptic message: "please don't edit this or any related page for awhile". Now he's halfway through a two-month hiatus, according to his user page. I would revert the page myself, but I'd feel more comfortable leaving it for an administrator. - dcljr 02:06, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Move 'V1 flying bomb'[edit]

Hello, I tried to move said artice to 'V-1 flying bomb', but couldn't because there was a redirect page by that name already existing. Please help me do this (I write to you as you were the admin welcoming me to wikipedia once upon a time). Also, if at all realistic, I wonder if I should try for adminship myself -- I'd certainly like to fix such stuff 'singlehandedly' instead of asking you overworked folks to do it... :-) --Wernher 23:40, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I took care of it. Gentgeen 00:01, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Thanks Gentgeen. Angela. 00:02, Aug 15, 2004 (UTC)
Yep, thanks! And a sidenote to Angela: Thanks for the encouraging comments re my tentative sinister plans of applying for adminship (*moviestyle evil laughter*). Also, I've taken up the 'tradition' of welcoming new wikipedians (hope that's OK even though I'm not an admin, just a mere mortal w'an). --Wernher 16:37, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Yes, that's fine. There' s no need to be an admin to welcome someone. My 73rd edit was leaving a welcome message. :) Angela. 21:17, Aug 15, 2004 (UTC)

Question[edit]

Dear Angela, I read your resume and I was very impressed. That is why I would like to ask you a question in regard to an article that I wrote. I wrote an article about Chita Rivera. according to the my research and sources, she is considered a "Broadway Legend". Now, this is not my POV, it is what has been quoted. In my articule I wrote that she is a "Broadway Legend" and User RickK continues to delete that sentence because he says it's A point of view. I wrote to him in his talk page and I also told him the magazines and newspapers call "Chita" a Legend. I will respect your opinion un this subject and if your kind enough, I hope you read my articule. Thank you User:Marine 69-71

Dear Angela, Thank you for your insight. People like you help people like me learn more. Thank you again. If I need advice in the future I hope that I can count on you again. User:Marine 69-71

Help[edit]

Hi. I'm a relatively new user to Wikipedia. You seem like the sort of person to ask for help about this. Last week I came across an article called Holomovement that was (and still is) absolutely horrible. It is being maintained by a user, togo who, as far as I can tell, is crazy. I took it upon myself to try to fix this situation and have taken several steps in that direction. I did some provisional research of my own and wrote a new article on the topic to redirect to. but togo won't cooperate with this redirect. i put in a request for comment, as well, but so far only one person (a friend of mine that i basically had to armtwist into it) has said anything. togo was unmoved by his comments. it just seems that this is taking much longer to deal with than it should. i was wondering if you could help me speed it up. –Floorsheim 09:12, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi![edit]

I just wanted to say hi.

I have a few fashion ideas for wikipedia wear, but I havent gotten the time to write you about it, what with edits, new articles, shopping, excersicing, my brother's surgery, going wild and my past birthday (3 days ago, 32!!) It has been hard for me to do other than my quota of articles per day here. To add to it Ive received a lot of books as birthday present (Im doing research on Arizona women and on The Beatles in particular these days) and two video game consoles, so imagine! But I will tell youabout my fashion ideas later.

Well, fashion Goddess, lets just say that, if I had a romantic interest in England, as a Beatle song might have said, "it would be you".

I am going to include you in my list of friends, and, if I havent given you a barnstar, I will.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely yours, "Antonio Ga-ga 4u Martin"

 • PS: My dad says hi, he thinks youre one of the coolest at this place!
I hope you enjoyed your birthday. You did already give me a barnstar. It's on a subpage. Angela. 16:26, Aug 17, 2004 (UTC)

Question about the GNU license[edit]

Hi Angela,

My name is Jonathan and I just got connected to Wikipedia.

I noticed a comment you made concerning the licensing approach used on Wikipedia, and I thought you would be a good person to ask about something to do with licensing. I hope you don't mind.

Basically, I am trying to understand what the GNU Free Documentation Licence enables others to do with passages that are quoted from other works, like any article might quote from another on a fair use basis. However, the issue I have is not whether such things can be further distributed (there are no restrictions on that in this case) but instead how they can be ALTERED by others.

To be more specific, I am beginning to write some articles related to the Baha'i Faith. Now, the sacred writings of the Faith are available on a site called the Baha'i Reference Library and may be distributed for non-commercial purposes without restriction, such permission being granted by the copyright holder. However, it is not permitted to ALTER any of the content, that is, beyond normal formatting issues like font, appearance, etc.

To illustrate using a more familiar Christian example: I can quote from the Sermon on the Mount and distribute it freely without any restrictions for non-commercial purposes. What I cannot do is MISQUOTE it, or distribute a passage that says "Blessed are the warmongers", while attributing it to the Book of Matthew.

Does the GNU FDL protect and accommodate this? It doesn't appear that the invariant sections option is designed for it.

Please note that I am not trying to republish anything, simply to quote where it makes sense to the flow of the article, while providing a footnote and permalink back to the original location. An example would be as follows:

____The cornerstone principle of the Bahá'í Faith is the oneness of humankind. Bahá'u'lláh writes, "The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens." In line with this principle, Bahá'ís believe that the unification of mankind in a single global social order whose boundaries are those of the planet is the inevitable destiny of the human race, towards which it is being compelled by all the forces of contemporary history.____

Obviously, the article could benefit substantially from this kind of quotation, but I don't know whether the GNU FDL will allow it, nor if it will sufficiently protect the Bahá'í sacred writings from the kind of abuse that could possibly occur.

If you could provide me with some advice about this, I would deeply appreciate it.

Many thanks,

Jonathan Menon Jmenon 15:21, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi Angela,
Thanks for getting back to me. You did answer my question and you have put my mind at rest. And yes, I am only talking about short passages that would be integrated into the normal flow of the articles.
Thanks very much for your help.
