Why did the East German state-controlled media report the demonstrations? If they hadn't, people in other cities would only have heard about them through rumour, making them much more unsure about emulating the protests and much more unsure about the potential consequences. 86.136.88.187 04:37, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

West Germany had radio and TV transmissions sent into East Germany, so that most people except the Southeastern rim had "West TV" reception. Also, gossip (even via telephone) should not be underestimated. Finally, Leipzig was in the centre of the most populated part of East Germany, making it a sufficient pressure on the SED government.
