NekoDaemon[edit]

Thanks for creating this cat bot. Should it also do the /today redirect? There's one other thing... the bot should probably unlist the daily pages when they become too old. Or maybe just when they're empty. I've asked on the talk page what to do with it. Radiant_* 10:00, Apr 18, 2005 (UTC)

First off, the VFD Today page is automatic. The VFD Yesterday page isn't. If you want the "add section link," just go look at the wiki code on VFD and change Votes to Categories.
  • Will do.
Secondly, I will not have the bot unlist the daily pages until you decide what is going to happen with those pages. -- AllyUnion (talk) 07:08, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • Of course. This is presently under discussion at the CfD talk page. We'll keep you posted when a good idea appears. Radiant_* 12:36, Apr 19, 2005 (UTC)

BJAODN: Springtime for Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense[edit]

Hi Ally- Fair enough, if that's the specific line you want to refer to. My memory keeps giving me a line (maybe it's in the second verse or something) that goes, "Springtime for Hitler and Germany, Winter for Poland and France..." That's where my proposal comes from... It seems silly to post mine as a separate proposal, given that yours and mine refer to the same song. When a change to an existing proposal is, er, proposed, how do we know which version subsequent voters are supporting? Should yours be the default because you posted first? I mean, mine wasn't a misquote, just a different quote from the same song. Personally, I like mine better, which makes sense, but you like yours better, which also makes sense. Are we supposed to put this to some kind of vote? Seems a bit overdone and kind of adversarial for BJAODN... What do you think, Ally? Other frequent BJAODNers? (By the way, I removed your comments from my talk page, as I am moving this discussion over to the Next Page Title talk page for others to comment on.) Shane Smith 20:13, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

quoting you:

Just to note, the reference is from the movie/play "The Producers" which the line goes, "Springtime for Hilter and Germany... Deutschland is happy and gay..." -- AllyUnion (talk) 07:31, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Bots?[edit]

Hi there. I know you have a lot of cool bots, so I wanted to ask you: What language do I have to know to write a bot? Python? I don't know python, but I can program in some other languages. Would that be enough? Thanks! -Frazzydee| 21:42, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I found the answer to that, and I'm making an attempt at a bot. If you have some time, would you mind helping me with it? It's very simple: I want it to depopulate templates. -Frazzydee| 22:09, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Sorry to bug you again, but I actually found that there's already a bot to do what I want (template.py in the pywikipediabot framework package). For some reason, it's not running :S. It gives my an error when I try to run it. I'm probably doing something stupid and I don't know it ;).
I'd really appreciate it if you could leave me a note on my talk page (or by email) if you're willing to help me, or if you have some insight into what's wrong. Thank you very much. -Frazzydee| 22:40, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Oh, sorry :#. Here's the error. I have a feeling I'm doing something extremely stupid and I just don't see it, so please forgive me if I am!

Good idea. I'm presently discussing it with Kappa. Radiant_* 12:02, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

BJAODN conundrum[edit]

You seem not to be organizationally challenged, unlike me, so maybe you can help here. Someone who shall remain nameless wants to add some titles that fall under "television" but are references to a single show, quotes et al. Probably a small bunch of them. Or maybe a slightly bigger bunch. The person thinks the show might deserve its own category, but can't figure out how to add it without a) completely messing up the numbering system; b) linking it inappropriately to an existing number; c) putting it down at the very bottom under the page numbers, which seems odd. What do you think would be the most sensible way to handle this? I will convey your directions to the person. Thank you very much in advance. --Mothperson 16:31, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

stub cats ready for deletion[edit]

{{eris-stub}} and {{shahnama-stub}} have been prepared for deletion, in accordance with (finally) WP:WSS consensus. Can you perform the edits directly, or do you feel they should first be submitted through WP:TFD and WP:CFD? Circeus 22:27, Apr 22, 2005 (UTC)

BJAODN LOTR[edit]

Huh? What's this truth question? I have no object to the idea. It's the - I can't remember the term! Read aloud the following:

  • One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them

Now read aloud:

  • One bad joke to rule them all, one votes for deletion to find them.

I can live with the extra syllable in "one bad joke", but the next part - the four extra syllables make me cringe. Similarly, 'One ring to bring them all" vs. "one deleted nonsense to bring them all" - nails-on-blackboard time for me. Another four extra syllables! Okay, I'm a syllable-nazi. I can't help it! --Mothperson 16:31, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The problem can be fixed somewhat by replacing "Votes for Deletion" with "VfD". I think cutting the title into two parts like "One Bad Joke to rule them all, one VfD to find them..." and having the second part as a subtitle or the title for the next page may help (I support the latter) —UTSRelativity 17:33, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Bot[edit]

sorry....i still remember...did you already have the bot written and are waiting for me? it might be a few weeks longer (it's about finals season now and i also have to go to a conference...) my aim is "woodsideaprtmnts". feel free to nag me about it online and please excuse the procrastination. --Jiang

Yet another bot thing[edit]

Hi there! I had some thoughts about clarifying the Wikipedia namespace, that might be done by bot. I would like your opinion on whether it's a good idea... first, it may be useful to move all pages in Category:WikiProjects into Category:Inactive WikiProjects if they haven't been edited for a set period of time, say two months. Second, it may be useful to put something like Template:inactive or Template:historical on any Wikipedia namespace page that hasn't been edited for a lengthy period of time, say half a year. Either can of course easily be undone if a page once more becomes active. What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Needs more discussion? Yours, Radiant_* 09:04, Apr 25, 2005 (UTC)

The pywikipedia framework doesn't have anything encoded for moving stuff at the moment. -- AllyUnion (talk) 03:55, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Moving in this case would mean removing the 'category:wikiprojects' text from the page, and adding in 'category:inactive wikiprojects'. I'm sure the latter can be done, but am unsure about the former. Radiant_* 08:42, Apr 27, 2005 (UTC)
That shouldn't be a problem... I'll put it on my to-do list. -- AllyUnion (talk) 10:31, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I tested this page this morning and everything seems to be working fine. Last week, while you were moving, there was page blank that did not get caught by SandBot so I put in the comment. Trödel|talk 17:14, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Sandbot on Intro page[edit]

Sandbot appears to duplicate the header every time. Lotsofissues 14:53, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Actually what is happening is that someone inserts a Hard Return between the template and the comment or edits the comment - Sandbot properly enforces the first two lines but now the comment is in there twice. The same issue will happen if you duplicate the template reference - see my tests yesterday. I think this is undesireable but acceptable, unless it is easily fixed, because it doesn't mess up the visual appearance of the page and the duplicate comments are getting reverted fairly quickly Trödel|talk 20:17, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I tested things today and it is working great! thx again Trödel|talk 19:02, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

quick deletion request[edit]

Would you be so kind as to delete category:Tachyetes? I accidentally typoed it into existence creating category:Tachyeres. Circeus 19:39, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

I got it. *grins* - UtherSRG 20:02, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

Policy consensus[edit]

Hi there! I've closed the discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion_policy/Lists_of_schools. Please take a look at it and see if the conclusions are sound. Yours, Radiant_* 10:28, Apr 28, 2005 (UTC)

Re: Chicago[edit]

Hi, AllyUnion. Thanks for contacting me. I took a look at Talk:Chicago, Illinois. The talk page is kind of long, skimming it, I actually didn't notice much being discussed currently, aside from the move to Chicago (although that poll has been closed). Actually, I did notice the image poll before, but have refrained from voting. Why? I like all three. I've thought about voting several times, but when I look at the three at different times my top choice varies. I hope some way is found to incoroporate all three. I'll keep an eye out for activity on the talk page. Thanks! — Knowledge Seeker 07:45, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

DYK[edit]

Template talk:Did you know has undergone some changes. Most importantly, its archive section has been renamed. I've added a comment in the coding to prevent it from changing again. Could you please check if these changes haven't messed up the coding the bot uses and can you run the archiving bot again. Mgm|(talk) 10:01, Apr 29, 2005 (UTC)

End of Chicago image vote[edit]

AllyUnion, can you close the picture voting now, in favor of #1 (it has 4, compared with 2 and 3 for the others, which I'd like to put elsewhere in the article). I really'd love Chicago, Illinois being a featured article. Sincerely, Dralwik 02:10, 1 May 2005 (UTC).[reply]

Pearle code released[edit]

I added a download section to User:Pearle to make her source code available. It's largely useful for category work. Enjoy. -- Beland 04:27, 1 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Latest archiving[edit]

(See Wikipedia:Recent_additions&diff=0&oldid=13128897.) I've come across a few top items of which the closing brakcet of an image was left. Also some items had several version listed, one labelled final version. I'm not sure whether it was archived like that, or if it's a byproduct from the bot process. Looks fine otherwise. Mgm|(talk) 11:42, May 2, 2005 (UTC)

Pic of the day[edit]

Hi Jason,

Just to let you know that your photograph Image:Chicago Skyline at Sunset.png is up for Pic of the Day on the 6th May. You can check and correct the associated caption at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/May 6, 2005. -- Solipsist 08:11, 4 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was taken near or at Adler Planetarium... somewhere around Northerly Island. I'll have to double check. -- AllyUnion (talk) 12:48, 4 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Kurando-San not working?[edit]

It seems your bot isn't working properly anymore on the WP:FPC. It just removes the old nominations, but doesn't move them anywhere (example). --Conti| 18:56, May 4, 2005 (UTC)

What did I do to break the bot? BrokenSegue 21:01, 4 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

VfD[edit]

Just to let you know that I have edited the VfD page so that it loads easier - the old one takes me 10 mins to load and seems pretty long. I'm concerned as to what this may do to your VfDbot, so thought it would be useful to give you a head's up. Kind regards, jguk 18:49, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The other reason was that Tim Starling declared the long form VFD page toxic - see wikitech-l post linked on VFD talk page - David Gerard 19:11, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
