Technical question about your answer on the Ref Desk

Hi there! I was browsing the ref desk and came across this: Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous#Raw Spinach and your teeth. My question: is there a trick to searching the Ref Desk archives? Aah - I see! Well, you memory is impressive ;-)

In case it may prove useful, I tinkered around with Google for a bit, and I think that you can get it to search only the Ref Desk archives by adding site:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk_archive to the search, for instance: [1]. It seems to work.

Yes, it does appear that the Host is referred to as "Herry Bailly" by the Cook - thank you for pointing that out. Still, considering that he's referred to dozens of times as "the Host" and only once, in passing, by a name, I think the articles read better without naming him - I'd be reluctant to revert my edits. Please help save Repo Man movie article

Howdy MeltBanana!

This guy, Dædαlus, is in there trying to remove parts that you, I and many others contributed to the Repo Man article. Please add to the bottom of this thread on the Repo Man talk page that you think the "Notable Motifs" section should not be blanked (erased), but left as is since the Pulp Fiction article also has a "Notable Motifs" section that isn't being considered for removal at all (even by Dædαlus himself).

While I agree that the "Notable Motifs" section could use some work, it certainly won't help the article to delete the whole thing and erase all our work which consists of many multiple contributers over a course of years. I'm willing to work on it and better incorporate it into the article, he just wants to delete it all!

With consensus, we can stop this guy from deleting all our work soon!

1. Can you give me a reference I could look up of Chaucer is said to have "passed at Dover" on 17th July 1368 and was out of the country for no more than 106 days.
2. Also There are tantalising suggestions that Chaucer may have met either Petrarch or Boccaccio on his Italian journey of 1373...
3. Can you expand on ...the reference in the Clerk's prologue to learning the tale from Petrarch in Padua is sometimes seen as Chaucer's own history.

I see in the Petrarch article it says: About 1368 Petrarch and his daughter Francesca (with her family) moved to the small town of Arquà in the Euganean Hills near Padua, where he passed his remaining years in religious contemplation. He died in his house in Arquà on July 19, 1374 – one day short of his seventieth birthday.

Well this is mostly taken from the introductory material of The Riverside Chaucer 3rd Ed. OUP 1998 Larry D. Benson (ed.) ISBN 0192821091 To really research this you would need Chaucer Life-Records, Martin M. Crow and Clair C. Olson (eds.) the standard work for all documents of the time relating to Chaucer. Good modern biographies are Chaucer: His Life, His Works, His World, Donald Howard and The Life of Geoffrey Chaucer: A Critical Biography, Derek Pearsall.

"Lerned at Padowe of a worthy clerk, / As preved by his wordes and his werk. / He is now deed and nayled in his cheste; / I prey to God so yeve his soule reste! / Fraunceys Petrak, the lauriat poete" -- Clerk's Prologue ll. 27-31 That is the reference from the Tales to learning it from Petrarch. The letter in which Petrarch wrote the story, addressed to Boccacio, mentions how he had told the tale to friends and they thought it was good.

The records show that Chaucer made 4 journeys abroad between 1366-70 but the 1372-73 journey was the first to actually mention Italy as a destination. The mission was to negotiate trade with Genoa, which is a long way from Padua, but expenses dated 23 May 1373, submitted on Chaucer's return, mention Florence which is a lot closer, although still over the alps in early spring. It is still a stretch to imagine they might have met, particularly as there is no mention of the meeting by Petrarch's biographers and how much an author's work reflects their life is always debated.

Boccaccio was in Florence in 1373 to lecture on Dante at the church of Santo Stefano at Ponte Vecchio but Chaucer left before the lectures and if they were ever in the same city is unknown. It is significant to note that Chaucer never mentions Boccaccio by name, which is odd considering the amount he uses his work, and how he usually mentions important sources, such as Petrarch. G. G. Coulton in his Chaucer and his England points out that poems of the time were often anonymous or their title pages were got lost, so Chaucer might not have even known of Boccaccio enough to have wanted to meet him.
