Talk:The Battery (Charleston)

I lived near Charleston, SC, for almost 20 years and have never heard the Battery referred to as Battery Park. White Point Gardens is one place along the Battery where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers meet. Are you sure the Battery should be called Battery Park? Sure, some Web pages and other Wikipedia entries might call it that, but are those sources reputable? I looked at several maps and guidebooks of the area and could not find one labeling The Battery or White Point Gardens Battery Park.

I agree. The Battery is the promenade along South Battery from King St. to East Battery and then up East Battery to about Longitude Lane. White Point Gardens is sometimes called Battery Park. But, Battery Park is never, ever used to refer to the street of houses along the harbor. It is not ever clear what this article is supposed to be about. I agree that this needs to be made into "The Battery" with a separate article about White Point Gardens.--ProfReader (talk) 14:40, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is a problem here. I grew up in Charleston, and as far as I've ever known Battery Park is just an alternate name for White Point Gardens. I have never heard of the former "including" the latter. The Battery itself is outside the park, whatever you call it. How does one address this misinformation? I've contacted the office of Media Relations for the City of Charleston regarding this subject. Here is the quick reply I received this (Saturday) morning. More to follow: "Thanks for catching that! I will get you info and sources on Monday. FYI- the 'green part' is called White Point Garden. Will be in touch." Littlereba (talk) 14:34, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I read how to rename/move a page, but since I am not a member of this community, I am unable to do so. Also, if you have solid evidence that I don't calling The Battery Battery Park in some official or standard colloquial way, then it probably isn't appropriate for me to do so.

This page has to be retitled and, I'm sure, will be soon, but for anyone interested, here are two local (Charleston) sites that state that "Battery Park" is simply a "popular" name for White Point Gardens, as I and others (see above) have maintained: http://blog.vendueinn.com/things_to_do_in_charleston_south_carolina/battery-park-white-point-gardens/ http://www.vacationsmadeeasy.com/CharlestonSC/pointsOfInterest/BatteryParkWhitePointGardensinCharlestonSC.cfm Whether rewritten or not, the article should be retitled "White Point Gardens" with a mention of the "popular" alternate name with, probably, a redirect. Much more importantly, there ought to be a new, separate article on the Battery itself, an extremely important part of Charleston's geography, culture, and history. Perhaps yours truly will have to do it, but I will wait to hear from my official Charleston source (see my post of 25 February 2012 above). Littlereba (talk) 20:53, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

O.K. It's official. I have copies of a number of documents, including official City of Charleston government documents and local newspaper articles that unequivocally clarify this question. There is officially no such thing as "Battery Park," so the title itself is simply incorrect. Moreover, the Battery and White Point Garden (please note: NOT Gardens, plural) are two separate things, requiring separate articles. They happen to be in the same geographical area, but they not part of a single physical or governmental entity. The existing article should be removed and replaced by two articles. I will investigate how to proceed since I have not encountered a similar situation before. Littlereba (talk) 01:22, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This page on the history of the Citadel and its students during the Civil War mentions nothing about them firing shots from The Battery.

What is "battery park"?[edit]

Although some tourist might have posted somewhere about "battery park" there is no such place in Charleston, maybe they were confusing it with New York. I don't see any sources citing this name. An article on the Charleston Battery is not a place to list one or more misconceived names. You should remove any reference to "battery park" and not include any list of wong names or explanations about them. Isn't the Wikipedia mission and process to have facts backed up by official sources? 24.236.92.207 (talk) 18:04, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
