Clarification[edit]

Would someone be able to more precisely describe the "platinu brick" and "platinum rmod" mentioned in the article? Corvus 01:50, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Good information. Seems that Reis really invented the first ever electrical telephone! Sea diver 07:31, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

indistinct speech?[edit]

But mentioned article of BBC says that telephone of Reis could transmit speech very well. Tests performed in 1937 confirmed it.Sea diver (talk) 01:38, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stolen from Bell?[edit]

Could someone please remove the statement "Although, it has been proven he stole the idea a few years earlier from Alexander Graham Bell - as he was the real inventor." from the first paragraph? First of all it is utterly wrong, that Reis has stolen the invention, because Bell was only 15 years old (born 1847)when Reis showed his invention in public (1862) and begann his own works in the 1870s. The second thing is that you should proof such a statement with a proper source when you put it online. Thank you.131.220.99.58 (talk) 10:31, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

German[edit]

The German phrase "the horse does not eat cucumber salad" is in fact reportedly the first sentence ever spoken on a telefone. However it was not chosen because in German it is difficult to understand (which it isn't), but because it is utterly unforseeable and nonsensical and would it thus make impossible to be merely guessed. Discovery Channel which is quoted as the source for the above-mentioned false statement got that definitely wrong. In a book about Philipp Reis that I read as a boy, called "Der sprechende Draht" (The Talking Wire) it said that Reis came up with that sentence on the spur of a moment when at the moment of putting his machine to the test, and fearing he might be accused of having foul-played, he saw a horse out of the window and remembered that he had had cucumber-salad for lunch. But the sentence itself is clearly and easily intellegible in German. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.58.132.68 (talk) 22:46, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

German invention[edit]

I see that various editors have tried to add the category German inventions to this article, each time being reverted, however. What is the objection here, and the reason for removing the category? It appears perfectly acceptable and correct to label it as such. Reis even had a patent on his device that prevented the Bell System from obtaining a patent there later. But even without politics about patents, it can't be denied that he invented something and it should be listed in the category. Reis is furthermore listed in List of German inventors and discoverers, so whatever he invented must have been a German invention. Kbrose (talk) 17:12, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Kbrose: It's not really "various editors", but instances of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Europefan. It's entirely possible that some of the bulk-reverted changes are legit, but this person's long-term pattern of disruptive editing requires WP:RBI. Regrettably, the bulk-revert script I use doesn't let me provide a rationale. Favonian (talk) 17:19, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Then perhaps bulk-revert scripts should not be used. They appear as vandalous as the accused action. Kbrose (talk) 17:22, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
