The X Factor is a 2004 ITV television show of similar format to Pop Idol. It is a music talent search split over three categories: group, solo 16–25 and solo 25 and over. The judges are Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne.

After the initial auditions, each judge was randomly allocated a category (Cowell: solo 25 and over; Walsh: groups; Osbourno: solo 16-25). They each selected five acts to go their homes, from which three were chosen to appear on the live shows.

The show is hosted by Kate Thornton and is labelled as the UK's biggest ever talent search, as it is the first contest to have no upper age limit, and to allow both solo singers and groups to compete. As with many other ITV programs the main show was shown first on ITV1 with The Xtra Factor, a companion show looking behind the scenes, was shown on ITV2.

There are two live shows on each Saturday evening. After the first show, in which each act performs once, the public votes for the act that they want to remain in the show. In the results show, the two acts with the fewest votes are revealed. They must then sing again before the judges decide who will be eliminated.

Controversy

The series was controversial from the beginning. Tabloid reports claimed that the show was fixed after it emerged that Louis Walsh had allegedly cheated and tried to help a band that he used to manage get through to the final stages of the show. Footage of Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne coaching contestants to argue back to the judges was also being sold over the Internet to the highest bidder.

Simon Fuller, the creator of Pop Idol, claimed that the format was a rip-off of his own show, and filed a law suit against Simon Cowell, despite the fact that he is judge on both shows.

In 2003, Marvel Comics announced it was to publish a five-part series entitled Di Another Day (a reference to the James Bond film Die Another Day) featuring a resurrected Diana, Princess of Wales as a mutant with superpowers, as part of Peter Milligan's X-Statix title. Amidst considerable (and predictable) outcry, the idea was quickly dropped.

Levon Ter-Petrossian was the President of Armenia from 1991 to 1998. His country defeated Azerbaijan in a costly war over Nagorno-Karabakh, a predominately ethnically Armenian territory that had been given to Azerbaijan by the Soviet Union. However, because of many economic and political problems, he resigned on February 3, 1998 and was succeeded by Robert Kocharyan.

Five singles have been released from the album:

"Innuendo" was released in January 1991. The single became Queen's third UK number one single.

"I'm Going Slightly Mad" was released in March 1991. It reached number 22 in the UK charts.

"Headlong" was released in May 1991 and debuted at number 14 in the UK.

"The Show Must Go On" was released in October 1991 and peaked at number 16 in the UK charts. An Elton John reworking of this track appeared on the third Queen Greatest hits album.

Following the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury, it was decided to re-release Bohemian Rhapsody as a double A-Side with "These are the days of our lives". The track was the UK's christmas number one of 1991.
