Move[edit]

(Fr. Antique -> Antique, Philippines)

Take a look at what links here. As "antique" is a common term in English that we could probably use an article on, I think this article should be moved to something like "Antique, Philippines". -- 13 Jul 2003, Infrogmation

Good idea. --Menchi 03:47 14 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Done. I was at first hesitant just putting the province under "Antique" since, it is an common word that deserves a topic. —seav 05:41 14 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Etymology[edit]

For many ancient European places, their articles mention the meaning of their names. How about "Antique"? Is it related to "antiguo" of Spanish? Or is this false friend? --Menchi 05:35 14 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I have no idea. Let me search on the Internet. It is most probably of Spanish origin, although I have no idea why it now has the english form. —seav 05:41 14 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Ok. I searched and found the answer, then I remembered that I already know the answer vaguely before. Antique was named after the large red ants that can be found on Panay. These were called antik-antik. I don't know what language that is since we also call large red ants antik in Tagalog, but this is in the Visayas, which almost certainly has a different language. —seav 06:27 14 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Great stuff. You could add it to the end of the intro or a new paragraph. Both formats have been seen in WP. --Menchi 06:48 14 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Done. The research got actually more involved. I had to place an early history of the province to put the name etymology into context. (I would do the succeeding history in the future.) —seav 08:27 14 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Binirayan festival[edit]

I added this sub-section; at least this article has now template reference and citation or source. This started in San Jose 34 years ago by the late Gov. Evelio Javier - a weeklong festivities of colorful street parades, beach shows, plaza concerts, beauty contest and trade fair. "Binirayan"(biray or "sailboat" in Kinaray-a, Antique's local language), refers to the difficult journey of the 10 datus to reach Malandog beach, where they befriend the Atis (Aetas) and eventually start a civilization in pre-Hispanic times. As above-stated, Antique was mythically founded by Bornean Malays in the 12th century. According to legend, 10 Bornean datus (chieftains) claimed Panay island and their leader, Datu Sumakwel, founded the settlement in Malandog, Hamtik, Antique.[1] --Florentino floro (talk) 07:27, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Founded in 1917 or 1780 ?[edit]

@Anyone and @RioHondo: Re: this edit. Neither 1917 nor 1780 are mentioned anywhere in the prose of the article. Please add details and a citation, to clarify what/when "founded" means, in this situation. Thanks! –Quiddity (talk) 18:55, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The province was established as a separate province (a politico-militar one) in 1780 with the capital in Hamtic (formerly Antique), hence the province's name. Aklan is the only province in Panay established in the 1900's. But, due to the transition to American colony and later independence, there have been certain abolishments and reestablishments of provinces that happened. Iloilo province for example, albeit re-established only in 1901 by the US government, we all know the province was among the first to be established way back in 1566. Many of our provinces were Spanish-created that's for sure. Already provided ref in the est. date. RioHondo (talk) 19:20, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the details. :) –Quiddity (talk) 20:30, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
