Why no Japanese? ;-) —vlad

The Victionarium seems to be infested with Japanese (yes, of course it could be Chinese, wouldn't know to tell the difference...) - not very helpful for a dictionary that's supposed to be in Latin. --Francis Schonken 13:13, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Yes, it's Japanese, but it should be Chinese, too. We don't yet have a a Sinolingual Victionarian, sadly. I don't think I'm qualified to give definitions for Latin words (火 can simply be defined as ignis, but how do you define ignis?), so I'll leave that up to Muke, at least for now. --vlad (vladmortuusest on victionarium (at least, it should be vladmortuusest:))

Salve! I notice you have created wikt:la:Vānitās. Convention is (on all Wiktionaries, including la:) not to create page titles with macrons, breves, or other notations generally only found in dictionaries or learners' texts: there is plenty of room for that in the article itself. BTW, the Latin name for the "synonyms" header would be "synonyma" (singular "synonymum"), so you can spell it out next time. :) Do check out wikt:la:Project:Exemplum for current article formatting standards (synonyms aren't in there yet, as I had figured on treating them inline with the definitions, but other users don't agree with me on this, so.) —Muke Tever (Myces on la:wikt)

Oh, and another thing I noticed! Interwiki links are supposed to link to articles in other languages about the same topic. Where the dictionary is concerned, this means the same word: the interwiki links on wikt:la:Vanitas should be to, e.g. wikt:en:Vanitas, not wikt:en:Vanity. (The only deviation would be where one dictionary uses a different headword, such as wikt:la:sum versus wikt:pl:esse.) This is also standard practice on the Wiktionaries. —Muke Tever 14:03, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

(On my talk page you wrote: "Formae aliae" is perfect for what I meant by "Syn.") — The purpose of "formae aliae" is alternate spellings of a word, not other words of the same meaning (though there may be still a couple of Japanese pages on la: where this confusion hasn't yet been remedied). And don't worry about being new, it happens to all of us at least once :) —Muke Tever 16:03, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Quotes, translatio, synonymum[edit]

  1. There is a space for a Latin Wikiquote at la.wikiquote.org but it has not yet been set up apparently. There are not much in the way of set phrases on la.wikt yet, though you can talk to Vladisdead who has been adding some Japanese proverbs.
  2. A reference for “translatio” (or “tralatio”) can be found here. For the verb "to translate" the ordinary word that seems to be in use is reddere, though “redditio” doesn't seem to be used in the sense of “a translation”.
  3. Synonymum is, admittedly, a Greek word in origin, but the pure Latin form, which appears to be “verbum cognominatum” is both obscure and apparently ambiguous. —Muke Tever 16:52, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)
