Hi, it's a good rewrite so far. It's a difficult topic to write about, I think, because it hasn't really been very well defined. It's possible to argue that you can be a victim of your own crime, as much as from other people's. Thus the victim of hte drug-taker is the drug-taker himself, as he had imperfect knowledge of his actions, and did not reckon on the consequences. Your section on 'good of society' is relevant - surely if society suffers, then there are identifiable victims? So it is no longer a victimless crime.

The purest example of a victimless crime I heard is that of a bank, which calculates interest payments to a few decimal places, and ignores the rest of it. This means that the money is effectively being thrown away. An employee sets up his bank account so that these tiny percentages of pennies go straight to him, and since hte bank is a major one this adds up to a considerable sum per week. Obviously he has no right to do this - the money does not belong to him. Equally there are no victims, the money would otherwise simply be thrown away, as much as electronic money can be. I'll edit it slightly, but I'd be wary of massive rerights to that effect, until I can find some sources. The line between original research and encyclopedic facts can, in philosophy, be fairly broad. Hope college went well, I finished my exams last week :) Inebriatedonkey 3 July 2005 10:06 (UTC)
