Census data - biographical info[edit]

I did some quick searching on census data. I found their family in the 1920 Sioux City, Woodberry County, Iowa census. This was taken Jan 2, 1920. Father and mother: Abe and Rebecca Friedman, age 32. Both came to U.S. from Russia in 1908 and were naturalized in 1916. They were Jewish. Abe was a grocer and had a store. Children: Hellen 8 years old, born in Iowa (all subsequent children born in Iowa), Dorothy 7, and Esther and Pauline age 3 and 6 months. (indicating they were born in July 1916) wrinehart 19 October 2006

So, I guess they shaved two years off their age! The article says 1918. The 1920 census record deserves credence, in my view, because it is close to the actual time of birth, and it was made before anyone could have had any financial motive to fabricate the date of birth.

Reconciled?[edit]

…but according to her family, she did reconcile with her now deceased sister… — The article doesn't mention anything needing reconciliation. Need an Abby expert to fix. Thanks, — RandallJones 21:51, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Note: See http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/Landers.html

Obviously, we need more information on this, but it is commonly believed that the two sisters were so jealous of each other's success that they did not speak to one another for many years. Their supposedly public reconciliation in 1964 was probably just that, public and nothing more. I guess even they realized that an "advice columnist" who does not speak to her own twin sister might lead people to question whether she is capable of advising others!

Also, I have read that Ann Landers believed that Abby became an advice columnist only to embarrass the former.

Fraternal twins?[edit]

After a pretty long online search, I didn't find a single website, other than this one, that said that they were fraternal twins. Many didn't specify, but most said they were identical, and one even said they were mirror image twins, which often occurs in identical twins. Whether or not anyone could "tell them apart" is not a criteria to determine whether twins are identical or not. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are "look alike" fraternal twins, while I went to school with twins who were identical, yet because one had health problems from being a twin, she was much shorter, smaller in stature and had a hoarse voice.

The fact that both of them are female suggests, but does not prove, that they might have been identical twins.

Photo![edit]

Could use a photo, especially since the "Ann Landers" article has one. Thanks in advance! Softlavender (talk) 09:30, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article Misleading[edit]

The article suggests that the two sisters acted in collaboration with each other. They most certainly did not. They were not on speaking terms for much of their professional lives, inflamed by jealousy and ego. As noted in the link I posted above, "Abby" would offer discounts to newspapers if they would promise not to run "Ann Landers" column, and "Ann Landers" thought "Abby" went into the column-writing business just to embarrass her.John Paul Parks (talk) 15:22, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
