Relevance of Gordie Howe's age?[edit]

I am curious as to whether anyone else considers Gordie Howe's age irrelevant in the phrase: "In the 1977–78 season, Keon was joined on the Whalers by Gordie Howe, the team's leading scorer, despite turning 50 before the end of the season."
