Untitled[edit]

To anyone interested in this page, please see the talk page of the cathedral picture; it may need to be replaced for copyright reasons, and a couple of possible alternatives are listed there. Or, if you can verify that there is license to use the image, please tag it. -- Kbh3rd 04:08, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

On March 2 and March 3 I was having a discussion here with Uppland about moving this page or renaming it. The discussion seems to have been lost. I thought material from talk pages weren't deleted? --Fred chessplayer 20:20, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I wonder where the lost text went. :-(    Anyway, I think my point was that the archbishops of Uppsala are primarily bishops of their own diocese, only secondarily primates of Sweden, so to call them archbishops of Sweden is not correct, despite the Swedish Wikipedia doing that. / up+land 17:15, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

My suggestion was to make of this page somthing like Archbishop of Canterbury and List of Archbishops of Canterbury. Reason is that there is anough material about the archbishopric in Uppsala so that a page with just a list named "List of" would better describe its contents. However, if you still don't agree, Uppland, I won't change it.

The second point I would like to raise is that there is often very little material about an archbishop, and often this scarce material of little interest too. Is it acceptable to write a page that can never become more than a stub? The other possibility would be to gather all "minor" archbishops in one page. --Fred chessplayer 21:32, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I think that is a good idea. Go ahead! As for the second point, when only the name and possibly a vague date is known, as with many of the medieval bishops in Sweden, I think it would be best to annotate the list of bishops, rather than to create/let it remain a red link. If it turns out to be more or if some new study would later surface with more biographical information, it can easily be moved to an article of its own. Whether it is acceptable to write a page "that can never become more than a stub" seems to be a matter of ideology or religion on Wikipedia, but as far as I am concerned, it is in most cases like that better to include information in other articles where it remains in some context.
Sorry for not working on this. At the moment, I'm just adding stuff unsystematically here and there, according to my whim. / up+land 17:15, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I'm not going to work much more on this for now. We've done a good job it seems. What do you think? --Fred chessplayer (talk) (edits) 10:37, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I think it's fine for the time being. I assume you are tired of bishops by now, but if not, Lund could do with some attention (as could Skara, Linköping &c.). However, there are obviously many other Swedish topics in need of expansion. -- up+land 11:41, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Is this really true?[edit]

"Officially he is today primarily the bishop of his diocese and has no more authority than other Swedish bishops, although in effect his statements and opinions have a more widespread effect."

I mean, he has no diocese. There is a separate person who is Bishop of Uppsala. / Kriko 09:47, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Really? Who is that? / Fred-Chess 11:04, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The issue is complex. In a page on the election of the new archbishop, it says that
"Skälet till att Uppsala stift har en särställning är att ärkebiskopen också är biskop i Uppsala stift. Från 1990 har Uppsala en stiftsbiskop som delar ansvaret med ärkebiskopen."[1]
This clearly shows that the archbishop has not abdicated from his position as bishop of the archdiocese. However, the page on the position of the archbishop includes this passage:
"I Uppsala stift finns två biskopar: ärkebiskop KG Hammar och biskop Ragnar Persenius. I varje evangelisk-luthersk kyrka är biskopen knuten till ett pastoralt område. Ärkebiskopens pastorala område omfattar Uppsala, Sigtuna samt Enköpings kontrakt med sammanlagt 63 församlingar i 18 pastorat."[2]
In other words, it seems that for some purposes, the archdiocese has in effect been divided into two dioceses. (Oh, and Fred: the other bishop in Uppsala is Ragnar Persenius who was one of the two major candidates to succeed Hammar, but lost to Anders Wejryd.
