I'm starting to have real trouble with this page. It's all the work of one anonymous person, and there are some very suspicious constructs here.

1) It does not take a genius to add the Latin for East or West to a Latin (or non-latin) name and claim it is the latin name of the region. Referring to Australia Occidentalis is no more enlightening than Bromwich Occidentalis.

2) Is there any evidence that the term is used? Was "Columbia Britannicum" ever in common use by the pioneer settlers of British Columbia?

3) Some of this stuff is just done by translating one word at a time. Nova Eburaca is just 'New' prefixing the Roman name of the city of York.

4) Vasintonia seems to be just a transliteration of 'Washington'. Why would 'Washington' even have a Latin name?

5) If North Dakota is 'Dakota Borealis' why is 'Australia Borealis' South Australia?

6) Is it really useful to know that the Latin for 'Phocis' is 'Phocis'?

You might want to read the discussion and introduction at Latin names of cities, then. I added an explanation of the process, who uses them, and why they are useful there. You are going to get a fair bit of variation in something like this, also, and only a few of them are really standardized. Personally, I suspect that most of these could be merged into something like Neo-Latin place names, but I suspect that merging the tables might be a ticklish task. --- Smerdis of Tlön 02:25, 21 Oct 2003 (UTC)

I'd query "Nova Terra" for Newfoundland - where does that leave all the places called "Newlands" (which COULD be Novae Terrae, but that could bring problems too)? Robin Patterson 00:17, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Australia (Terra Australis)[edit]

The historical name for Australia in latin was Terra Australis. So therefore South Australia should be Terra Australis Australis. Unless there is a latin way of overcoming such repitition. 124.148.223.160 (talk) 16:24, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
