Untitled[edit]

Changed the line about 'many old public houses' in Prittlewell- I can only think of 4, The Spread Eagle, The Blue Boar, The Golden lion and the Railway, which isn't very historical. I suppose you could also count the Nelson (if you must...). And there is also the Bell on Prince Ave, but that isn't histoical at all...

7th(?) century arch in Prittlewell church[edit]

Pevsner and other sources accept the arch as 7th century. Does anyone know the source that raises the doubt about age reflected in the text? Rjm at sleepers (talk) 11:23, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have not found a source that casts doubt on the age of the arch, so I have removed the following: " is thought by some to be all that remains of the earliest stone building. However, there is opinion that the arch is of later construction, with that part of the current chancel dating from the early decades of the 11th century, having been built using materials from earlier constructions in the wider area of Prittlewell." Pevsner et al were probably wrong - I've updated this paragraph on the basis of a recent article in Medieval Archaeology. John O'London (talk) 13:23, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
