Arab Naming Conventions

al-, ul-, ar-, etc. simply mean "the", like in Spanish you have el for masculine or la for feminine. Abd- is a prefix that means "Slave of", thats why you often find people with names like Abdullah (Slave of Allah), Abdurrahman (Slave of the Merciful), etc. Since the names of God in Islam are reserved only for him, you will find al, or ar before to make it clear that it is a title reserved for God, and thus when you find such a name in the name of a person, it will be preceded by Abd. Father of is Abu, like Abu Yusef, father of Yusef, and son of is Bin or Ibn. Im not sure on the difference between the two, but I believe Ibn is considered more polite. Similarily, Bint is daughter, and Umm is mother of; Umm Ali, mother of Ali. DigiBullet 15:43, 19 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Abkhazia

I've been deleting the mentions of Abkhazia in the list of state leaders pages. Abkhazia is not recognized by any country, and so it should be listed, if at all, under Georgia (as has been done on some pages with Somaliland and Somalia). john 10:06, 1 May 2004 (UTC)

May I ask if you were adding it because you were going in alphabetical order, or because you have some sort of interest in Abkhazia? If the latter, I'd really prefer not to get into a lengthy discussion of the rights of the Abkhazian peoples. Why not merge AIS and T fem?

I noticed the articles are largely overlapping and cover essentially the same condition. When merging was proposed, you deleted it without explanation. I don't see any evidence of edit wars or controversy, but before I combine them into a single AIS article with a redirect from T fem, I wanted to do you the courtesy of asking your reasons. Zurbarán

Hi. It looks like you cut-and-pasted the text from Francisco de Zurbaran to Francisco Zurbarán. If "Francisco Zurbarán" is the more proper rendering of his name, the move is good. However doing it by cut-and-paste is not, since that looses the article history; that's why we have the "move page" feature, and why it should be used if you move a page to a different title. However, I searched for the individual - did not find one and formatted some Britannica as well as including image etc. I later found this other article also from Britannica and turned it into a redirect. Ah, so you started your own fresh article based on the 1911 Britannica, not realizing that someone else had already done something similar at a different spelling? Ok then. I suggest you double check the "de Zurbaran" article history to see if anyone had added anything to the Britannica article that's worth adding to your version (if you haven't checked already). Then if you wouldn't mind a bit more cleanup work, you could check the "what links here" to make indirect links (via redirects) into direct ones. WWII

I notice that you're adding WWII categories to lot of material. It appears that there is a problem with pages that have a right aligned element, such as a table or photograph, and the category placement. Putting the category link in completely throws the look of the page out. It is especially bad in the Monobook skin. I'm therefore going to revert your additions for things like ships which have a table in place. It's a nasty bug, and hopefully it will be sorted out soon, and then your changes can be readded. I am not adding these categories. Someone else added them as "WW2 XXX" for example Category:WW2 operations and battles. We reached a consensus in the channel to change WW2 to World War II. This is what I have been doing.--Oldak Quill 20:00, 30 May 2004 (UTC)

Just thought you'd like to know that when you add cetegories to people's articles, you can make them show up in alphabetical order by surname (like in [[Category:Baroque composers]] by adding the name to be alphabetized after a "|" character, like this: [[Category:Baroque composers|Bach, Johann Sebastian]]. List of encylopedia topics

Well, I compiled that list some time ago from several lists. I remember the 1911 encyclopedia in that, but not much more, as I didn't save the source lists. I had the list up almost 2 years ago, but it was taken down again for causing the wikipedia to slow down because of all the links ;-) So I kept only the wiki sources. Can you check the capitlisation of the vans, vons and des, e.g. John William Van Druten should not be John William van Druten; this is in accordance with standard Dutch practice, and probably should be used except for odd cases where the larger van is used, e.g. Dick Van Dyke. Congratulations on the number of new pages you're starting I just have one small point of feedback. I notice you're disambiguating US to United States of America, but you're not doing it for any other nationality. Links such as German and Spanish go only to disambig pages which means it takes extra work for someone else to clean up after you and insert [[Germany|German]] or [[Spain|Spanish]] (or whatever other nationality it is). I'm glad someone else wanted that list. As soon as I saw the "did you know", I tried to find a full list on Wikipedia and couldn't. The UN's page has a list [1] that I got most of the details from. The topics are very brief, so I had to do some research into that. This page gave me a little more information into that, and then I was able to use Wikipedia to do more research into, for example, what important happened in Hungary in 1956. It's (virtually?) impossible to find full resolution text online pre-1997, though, so getting quotes or from-the-horse's-mouth details will be difficult at best.

As for suggestions for the non-emergency special sessions, there's obviously the UN's official page for that [2], and Googling. Some of the topics on that page look pretty terse ("Palestine"? "Social Development"?), so I guess some research into better explanations would be necessary at some point. Good luck. - Plutor 14:42, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I deleted the article as it was seeming junk - and noticed it said "View or restore 10 edits" - it seemed odd that junk posting would have such history. I noticed that prior to the latest posting - they seemed like a valid article. Lists of accidents and incidents on commercial airliners

I have editied the individual lists so that they now point to each other and reference Incidents in Aviation. I would propose that the article Lists of accidents and incidents on commercial airliners be redirected to one of the lists, say the "by year" list since it is the most neutral. That would eliminate a layer of indirection and solve the merging issue.

US politicians

In looking through lists of various US governors and senators, I often see articles created by you that are titled according to the person's full name, rather than the most commonly used name, which call politicians by the ambiguous term "political figures", which give dates in office as "between a and b" instead of "from a to b" (by that wording, maybe it's neither a nor b, but something in between?), and which use the redirect "United States of America" instead of "United States". While I appreciate the effort it must take to get all these articles started, if you are going to write more of them, could you revise the format you use so there's no need to go back and make all the above changes every time? The consensus was to move the China page, and I also moved the Malaysia and Thailand pages without asking anyone since there were no participants at the time I moved them.
