Untitled[edit]

Just decided to add my own photo of St Nicholas's church which is I suppose the geographic centre of the new town in the oldest part usually just referred to as the village.

Origins of the name Cramlington[edit]

Regarding the origins of the name "Cramlington": The most popular belief is that this ancient village derives its name from the Viking settlers: 'Kramel' the thegn or chief's name, followed by 'ing' which refers to a family group or kinship and ton is an enclosed farm or homestead. It is also thought that the name used to begin with a K rather than a C. See http://www.blythvalley.gov.uk/page896.htm

Another suggestion is that it is from an Anglo-Saxon word crumb meaning a bend - a bend in the river. See http://www.thenortheast.fsnet.co.uk/Place%20Name%20Meanings%20A%20to%20D.htm. Gp100mk 14:31, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
