Tempo or measure length?[edit]

Re: Steve Reich's compositional method of rhythmic "phasing" - I don't think the defination presented here is correct? It states that players play at different *tempos*. I could be wrong, but I suspect that the players actually simultaneously play parts of different metrical lengths (ie, parts which have different numbers of beats in their bars). "Out of phase"[edit]

Actually I now realise there are some Steve Reich pieces which uses players playing the same lines at different tempos, and some where they play parts of different metrical lengths. Since Reich called one of these latter such pieces "Phase Patterns", there can hardly be any dispute that the terms has been used to cover both!--feline1 21:03, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mechanical jitter?[edit]

Is this technique useful in correcting mechanical jitter in analog recording, if not, why?203.214.75.127November 2005 (UTC)

Grasso[edit]

  • Francis Grasso is credited with originating phasing as a DJ technique, playing two copies of the same record from the same point at the same time so as to create a phase effect.

Irrational Ratios?[edit]

The last sentence ends thus: "especially if the ratio between lengths is irrational." Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it definitionally impossible for a ratio to be irrational? Powers 14:16, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Powers, this is symantically incorrect. Perhaps a more accurate wording would be, "especially if the ratio between lengths is not a multiple of a standard measure." I will change this in a few days if there are no objections to this proposal. --Jadorno 07:36, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jimi Hendrix[edit]

Hi,

Does anyone know which songs by Jimi Hendrix examplify this technique ? I know he did use it a lot, but I'm unable to catch it in his songs. Thanks

Actually Jimi Hendrix got the idea of phasing from the Beatles as you you hear phasing on "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds". This according to Eddie Kramer who worked with Jimi Hendrix. Taken from this article www.gcpro.com/ab_kramer.html GC Pro -- Guitar Center Professional Division

"If you look at what the Beatles did, the thing they came up with, automatic double tracking, ADT, when you expand that idea it become phasing. What he had done with the Beatles, he had done it in mono, but we decided we wanted to do it in stereo. It had never been done in stereo before. Animal Collective - #1[edit]

Likely not necessary for inclusion to the article, but Animal Collective song #1's first 45 or so seconds features this technique very clearly -- but with the two same samples. Petri Kuljuntausta's Violin Tone Orchestra, Words and When I Am Laid In Earth are all phasing works and composed with the help of digital sampler, or computer, and multitrack technology. His electronic multichannel music for video installation Eight Rooms is based on spatial phasing, where the phase shifted sounds surrounds the listeners and moves around them. Kuljuntausta's phase shifting method is based on Nano tuning of sounds.
