City of Ottawa[edit]

It was always marketed that it was a brand new City of Ottawa, and that Bob is the first mayor of the new City of Ottawa. --Spinboy 07:23, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

True, but the title "Mayor of Ottawa" never changed. Ottawa has existed since 1855 and we have had mayors ever since then. To say Bob Chairelli is the first mayor of Ottawa is ludacris, as the City of Ottawa has had 56 mayors before him. Earl Andrew 07:34, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
That's a good point. Spinboy 07:39, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I think that the article is incorrect also but meh what-ever. Also I would like to say... Isn't Bob the 58th mayor... and O'Brien 59th? Because Jim Watson is the 56th and then we state Chiarelli as 57th, but it seem we forgot acting mator Higdon. --Deenoe 12:00, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if I'm embarrassed or angry at Chiarelli for all the shit about the light rail. Right now I'd like to spit on him. I heard they want to name something after him. How about a garbage can on Rideau street near all the hostile/crazy homeless people? I think we would have done better the last three years if we had no mayor. 74.104.1.193 01:21, 15 December 2006 (UTC) Jordan[reply]

1st mayor[edit]

Section moved below older posts by -M.Nelson (talk) 04:57, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"When the 'new' City of Ottawa was created through amalgamation, he ran for and was elected its first Mayor." This is from the "About the Mayor" page of the City of Ottawa web site. Bob Chiarelli is the 1st mayor of this City of Ottawa. Based on this established, and referenced fact, I have changed the main page.Dave 00:28, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Then why did Ottawa just celebrate its 150th anniversary rather than its 4th? -- Earl Andrew - talk 01:54, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A new municipality was formed in 2001 by teh merger of 11 former municipalities which included Nepean, Gloucester, West Carleton, Cumberland, Goulbourn and the ohters including a former municipality that was called Ottawa, The history of this new municipality includes the history of all former municpalities. To say that the the last mayor of the former Ottawa waas a mayor of the new Ottawa is factually incorect and insulting to the citizens of the other former municipalities. If it wasn't for Kanata and Nepaen, there would be no high tech industry in Ottawa. The old Ottawa was certainly not interested in any form of development.

It is insulting and inaccurate to regard the history of the region as the history of only one of teh previous municipalities.

We have already discussed this, see the discussion belowabove -M.Nelson (talk). Ottawa marked its 150th anniversary this year, not its 4th. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:42, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I saw the discussion. The article is still incorrect. The discussion fails to recognize the distinction between 'signifier' and 'signified'. So the signifier 'Mayor of Ottawa' can point to two very different things. One 'signified' is a person who was mayor of the old city of Ottawa which was abolished with the amalgamation of the municipalities in the region of Ottawa-Carleton. The signifier can also point to a signified who is a person who was or is the mayor to the new city of Ottawa which was created at the time of amalgamation of the constituent municipalities of Ottawa-Carleton.

The above discussion disposes of your grammatical argument that the mayor of Ottawa is a unique office which was created at the inception of the old, now abolished, city of Ottawa. That argument would be equivalent to saying that marijuana is a cooking container because both marijuana and a cooking container can be denoted by the signifier ‘pot’.

A better argument for this is that the 'facts' contained in your article are merely your point of view and nothing more. An encyclopedia article should not be a place for only one point of view when there are others, just as knowledgeable of the situation, who hold quite different and incompatible points of view

Fair use rationale for Image:Old Ottawa Flag.png[edit]

Image:Old Ottawa Flag.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
