Charlemagne!???[edit]

Someone put Charlemagne as people from Gyor. Is it a joke?

The double acute[edit]

The ő in Győr has to be replaced with some other character in the English Wikipedia, otherwise the article title will look wrong due to character set difference. Now, we can use "Gyor", "Györ" or even "Gyõr". I'm not sure which is the best compromise. --Joy [shallot] 20:44, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

The last one is definitely inacceptable and since the Hungarian language distinguishes between a short ö (two points) and a long ö (two little lines as in Gyor), the only "correct" solution is to use Gyor without diacritics. The problem is that I myself "intuitively" usually use the normal ö instead of the long ö in the Wikipedia and in other similar cases - but we can make a redirect... By the way, why does the English Wiki not switch to UTF 8 ? - the French and German wiki has done so already and it works very well Juro 22:20, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I think using Györ would be better than using Gyor because there is more difference between O and Ő than between Ö and Ő. Does Ő really not show when someone uses other encoding? I switched my browser to West European encoding now and still I see the letters. Alensha 11:04, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The article content isn't the problem, it's the title. As long as the English Wikipedia continues to use Latin 1 as the character set for titles, the character no. 336 won't be shown properly in the title. --Joy [shallot] 12:20, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The name[edit]

The town got its Hungarian name Győr. Yes, but from where? Is it a lexical word of Hungarian? If so, what does it mean? If it's "just a name", where does it come from? --Angr/_{tɔk tə mi} 2 July 2005 17:56 (UTC)

It's an archaic version of the word gyűrű, which means ring. Possibly refers to a circular castle that stood here. (See also: Diósgyőr.) Population statistics[edit]

The population statistics, especially religion, in he infobox is certainly wrong, probably due to vandalism. It should be checked.

History[edit]

The second and third sentences read: "The first large settlement dates back to the 5th century BCE; the inhabitants were Celts. They called the town Ara Bona "Good altar", later contracted to Arrabona, a name which was used until the eighth century." It is unlikely the Celts called the city Ara Bona as that is bastardized Latin and is more likely what the Romans called the city. (Ara is the Latin name of the constellation 'the Altar' and some variation of bonum is good in many Romance languages.) In Celtic, it would be something similar to Athrú maith (according to Google translate) which is good altar in Gaelic, a Celtic language. It's possible that something like Arrabona was the name for the Celtics, but it was Latinized to a name acceptable to the Roman Catholic Church which dominated Central Europe at the time. I don't dispute Arrabona is an older name for the city. Just doubt the origin story of the name. SEKluth (talk) 21:31, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
