the article ~~says~~ used to say "The project consists in two different sites" but, according to a quick superficial reading of their site (in french) (see e.g. here in PDF format), there are additional (if more minor or "second phase") works involved. --FvdP 17:54, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In fact the Gotthard Base Tunnel is one (the biggest) project of AlpTransit. The other big one is the Loetchberg Tunnel, but there are also a lot of minor upgrades that will be done on the north/south network in order to support high speed trains. Maybe we should merge Gotthard Base Tunnel and AlpTransit, and send the first one into a section of this page. --Nova77 21:33, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Project purpose[edit]

Please be aware that the main purpose of this entire project is Intermodal freight transport, not passenger transport. The shorter travel times are just a nice side-effect. Current estimates for the final price tag are 22 billion swiss francs (~ $ 17.6 billion). Such an amount of money would not be spent to reduce traveltime from Milan to Zurich by one hour. --Cooper from german wikipedia.de 28 July 2006

Explanation please[edit]

Can somebody explain this sentence please:

This updates previous estimate of 2018, according to a 2007 investigation for the Télévision Suisse Romande programme Temps Présent[2]), as the original Gotthard tunnel of 15 km (9.3 mi) was at the time of its completion in 1881.

The only meaning I can make of it is that the original Gotthard tunnel was also scheduled to open in 2018, and actually opened 137 years early. That is clearly nonsense, so what was the author trying to say?. If I could work that out, I'd correct it, but I cannot. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 14:35, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've worked it out and edited the article to fix it. The "as the original..." bit belongs in the sentence a couple before where it says the new Gotthard Base Tunnel will be the longest in the world. Zurich Milano travel time[edit]
