If you ask me, this article is a bloody mess. I fail to see how anything short of a total rewrite could make it better. I put this up for copyediting, but then got too peeved about it, and wrote up some stuff myself, based on both Finnish and English translations of Kalevala. --Agamemnon2 12:13, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

While I don't know anything about Finnish mythology, it looks to me like this is the page about the Finnish god. If that's the case then the second hatnote:"

", is just providing a redlink to an alternative title of this page. Without being sure, I'm not comfortable deleting the hatnote, but if someone more knowledgeable would clarify the issue I would be very thankful.

Ilmarinen is also a god in finnish mythology, but in epic Kalevala he is certainly more heros than god, allthough in the oral tradition and oral origins of Kalevala they have propably been more or less same person. At the beginning and creation parts of Kalevala Ilmarinen is more god-like and "forged the dome of sky" etc., but propably Elias Lönnrot's wish to create a Finnish national epic made him to see Ilmarinen as just a heros. Planning to remove the detailed storytelling of the Kalevala[edit]

Hello! I love the stories about Ilmarinen in the Kalevala, but I think the “From the Kalevala” sections of this article are too detailed for an encyclopedia article - they basically go ahead and tell the details of some of the Ilmarinen stories. My intent is to describe the stories briefly (in 1-2 sentences) and point to online texts of the Kalevala for people who want to read the stories. I also plan to remove a few sentences that are like literary criticism of the Kalevala rather than information about Ilmarinen, e.g. “The tale of the Golden Bride can be seen as a cautionary tale...” Sharp-shinned.hawk (talk) 11:54, 18 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There should be a plot summary.. If you can make it more concise that would be better. However I don't think any of the "key acts" of the subject should be missing.5.198.10.236 (talk)

Removed "archetype"[edit]

lmarinen, the Eternal Hammerer, blacksmith and inventor in the Kalevala, is a god and an archetypal artificer from Finnish mythology.

~~Point of note - this is not what archetype means , ( see also Jungian archetypes and Archetypal literary criticism ) .. His archetype could be artificer - but that is the reverse of what was written.~~
