[Untitled][edit]

I grew up in Rock Island in 1951-1958. Could anyone tell me about a drowning of a child that happened about 1955 or so? Children fell into the rock pit in Rock Island and one child did not come out. I was the one that fell in and managed to crawl out. The other child did not. I would love to find an article in the newpaper about this incident, but so far have not found anything.

Rock Island - 50's-60's[edit]

I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, but had a very good friend who lived in Rock Island. We grew up together because his grandmother was our neighbor, and he visited there often. I can't remember the street they lived on, but it was thew last street before you reached what is now Oakland Park Blvd. The family name was Van Hooser. Van Van Hooser coached the Babe Ruth baseball team in R.I. which I played in for 2 seasons. We created the original Oswald Park out of a cow pasture donated by Mr. Oswald. Built the backstops using telephone poles and chain link fence. My friend's name was Louie, or "Junior." I can also remember a boy named Russ Pollard, and another named (I think) Ronnie Dunham.

If there is anyone out there who can tell me anything about any of these families, I'd love to hear from you. I can relate many more memories, but they'd only have meanings to those who lived in Rock Island in the 50's and early 60's.
