Hilway[edit]

"Hilway," Hiligaynon equivalent for the English word "free," is the name of a group of creative writers based in Iloilo, Western Visayas, Philippines.

Established in November 1998, Hilway was envisioned to be an organization that will discover and develop new Ilonggo literary talents.

Hilway was originally comprised of a small knit of campus writers in the West Visayas State University in Iloilo City led by Carlo June Panila, under the tutelage of award-winning Hiligaynon writer Alain Russ Dimzon.

Panila, who coined the name Hilway, was the group's founding president. Palanca winner Alice Gonzales became president in 2000.

When the original student-members left the academe and became professionals, Hilway expanded beyond the confines of the campus and tapped senior writers like Evee Huervana, Agnes Españo, Felino Garcia, and John Carlo Tiampong.

The group later became known as the "Hilway Writers Group."

Unlike the older Ilonggo literary group Sumakwelan, Hilway is collectively characterized by its uncoventional and experimental poetry.

However, like the other literary groups from Iloilo and the rest of Western Visayas, Hilway seeks to promote the welfare and the craft of Ilonggo writers by coming up with ways and means by which the group can access resources in support of its activities.
