Secular[edit]

There are not many secular works by Handel compared to his sacred works. Should there not be mention somewhere in this article that it is a secular work? I have not read the entire translation (only bits and pieces of sections I liked), so I may be wrong in that; but I found it by searching for secular works of Handel, and the bits and pieces I've read seem to agree. -- Charles Stover 20:29, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's not actually true. Handel wrote over 35 operas (I can't remember the exact figure) and this is one of them. They are all secular (almost all operas are by definition secular). He also wrote a large amount of instrumental and orchestral music, including famous pieces such as the Water Music. It is worth mentioning the Westminster recording of 1965 or 1966, with Maureen Forrester, Lucia Popp, Maureen Lehane, Thomas Hemsley, and Owen Brannigan, and conducted by Brian Priestman, which, though on modern instruments and using modern pitch, is uncut and respects Handel's scoring. I´d like to know, if there is something known about the singers to perform this opera for the first time. It's very strange that the sample of Ombra Mai Fu is of a baritone when the song was originally sung by castrato and now by countertenor or mezzo (never by baritone except perhaps in repertoire or concert).
