Proposal[edit]

For drivers' name, shouldn't we use the three-letter form (e.g.: Michael Schumacher is MSC, Fernando Alonso is ALO) as used in Formula One TV? That would be good to reduce the width of template. Mxcatania 14:44, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't like the idea to be honest. If someone is looking for a driver whose name they are not exactly sure of, seeing a group of three-letter abbreviations is hardly going to help them, and they would probably have to click to all of the links in order to find it. "MSC" means something to F1 fans, but as far as someone who's never seen them before knows, it is just a random grouping of letters. – AlbinoMonkey (Talk) 21:47, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with AlbinoMonkey. Also, I think the flags are too big (and maybe even irrelevant) for this template. --Fred Bradstadt 06:53, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I preferred the previous version with full names for the sake of clarity. 193.56.37.1 09:48, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Also, the use of flags is really overused on F1 pages, especially on the template. I'll revert the template now. Manipe 16:43, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for changed layout[edit]

Using the navbox class, adding v•d•e links, collapsible and using a uniform text size. What do you think? –Fred Bradstadt 18:33, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I'm not fussed either way. But maybe something to consider is whether we'll have to shrink the text back down next year when there are 12 teams. DH85868993 10:05, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
12 teams would make it look something like this: (Fred Bradstadt 10:51, 28 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

OK, then we'll do it like this (--Yuriy Lapitskiy 12:13, 28 August 2007 (UTC) :)

Being so completely new to editing on Wikipedia I just went ahead with this before looking at this page. However, I basically wanted to keep an updated bank of drivers that are most likely to be in next year's season but don't yet have a drive confirmed. These are the people will mostly fill the TBA's in the existing table. Since I was unable to format it in to the one on the 2008 drivers I made a separate one

Some feedback would be good, I basically got sick of looking up and playing spot the difference with the 2007 table when my memory started to fail etc. Feel free to add drivers if you think they stand a good chance of a drive but not necessarily remove drivers since I think it's a solid list at the moment. That's if it stays at all. Also, I welcome formatting suggestions. --Tombag 00:28, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Provisonal template for 2009 Formula One season[edit]

The above table shows the provisonal 2009 Formula One season. When do we start using this? At the end of the 2008 season? Or at the beginning of the 2009 season? Or when everything is confirmed? Darth Newdar (talk) 13:50, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest at the beginning of the 2009 season, say about 1 month before the season starts? :) - oahiyeel talk 19:40, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me. Darth Newdar (talk) 20:30, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

The result of the proposal was TEMPLATE MOVED per discussion below. -GTBacchus(talk) 01:55, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template:2008 Formula One teamsTemplate:Formula One teams — It is a very useless and nonsense move. No template about 2007 is kept. So I don't think 2008 version should be specially placed. —Raymond Giggs 10:05, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support. I was never in favour of the original move (i.e. {{Formula One teams}} --> {{2008 Formula One teams}} in the first place. As has been mentioned above, we don't maintain a template for the teams and drivers competing in each individual season (and as far as I'm aware, there are no plans to do so), so I don't see any reason why this template shouldn't just be called {{Formula One teams}}. Two other points to note: (1) I'm not sure this needs to be done via the "Requested Move" mechanism; if there's consensus to change the name (back) to {{Formula One teams}}, I think one of us could do it by just moving the template back over the existing redirect (2) Most (all?) of the linked articles actually transclude {{Formula One teams}} rather than {{2008 Formula One teams}} anyway, so if the name change does go ahead, there won't be many (any?) other articles that need to be updated. Title update[edit]

Now that the season has finished, I guess the title should really be changed to "Constructors and drivers who competed in the 2008 Formula One season". But then it seems odd having Super Aguri, Sato and Davidson down the bottom by themselves - should they be reintegrated into the main list? DH85868993 (talk) 20:41, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fisichella in Other drivers section[edit]

I don't think Fisichella needs to be listed in the "Other drivers" section - I believe the purpose of this section is to retain links to current-season drivers who aren't currently driving for a team and therefore aren't listed in the main part of the template (which is not the case for Fisichella). I thought I'd raise it the issue here to determine a consensus rather than just changing it because it's already been changed and reverted a couple of times. DH85868993 (talk) 22:59, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do believe that Fisichella should not be listed in "Other drivers" section, for the same reason. - oahiyeel talk 02:08, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree as well. Darth Newdar talk 13:34, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have now removed Fisichella from the "Other drivers" section. Darth Newdar talk 18:30, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Glock & Kobayashi[edit]

Why is Kamui Kobayashi listed as the other drivers section? He is driving for Toyota at the last race for2009. He should be in the Toyota section. He is driving, so his not a 'Stand By'.Áqúáďêîâŝ 06:46, 29 October 2009 (UTC) Σ[reply]

Please see WT:F1#Glock/Kobayashi in Template:Formula One teams, to see a discussion on which driver should be where. The agreement was that Glock is the contracted driver that drives for Toyota, and Kobayashi is just a stand-in – even if it is a two-race stand-in period. Darth Newdar talk 08:37, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2014 numbers[edit]

As per this agreement, the team and driver table on the 2014 season article is going to be arranged alphabetically by constructor name, with drivers arranged numerically within their teams until such time as a more permanent solution can be found. A part of this agreement is that the team and driver table (which will be changed shortly), results matrix (until the season start) and this template are all kept consistent, so please do not change it.

Secondly, I noticed people were editing the template so that the order of the drivers reflected the entry list published by the FIA exactly. However, there is a problem with this: there was nothing in the template to indicate why it was arranged in that fashion, and as a result, the table was confusing to look at. For example, why was Sebastian Vettel (#1) listed before Daniel Ricciardo (#3) when right next to them, Lewis Hamilton (#44) was listed before Nico Rosberg (#6)? Why was Romain Grosjean (#8) listed before Pastor Maldonado (#13) when right next to them, Jenson Button (#22) was listed before Kevin Magnussen (#20)? It makes for a confusing and inconsistent arrangement, with no clear indication of why certain drivers are listed in a certain order.

This was one of the issues that came up on the 2014 season talk page - people are observing the FIA entry list too closely, and offering nothing in the article (or template) that explains it. We are under no obligation to copy the list exactly; so long as we include all of the information and maintain neutrality, how we choose to represent it in an article is our perogative. In the grand scheme of things, it does not matter if Lewis Hamilton is listed before or after Nico Rosberg, so we choose the alternative that makes it easiest to read. We need one rule that is applied equally across the page, and in that case, number order is always easiest. Prisonermonkeys (talk) 23:46, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Background colours[edit]

@DH85868993: once all 2024 cars are launched, background colours have to be updated according to new liveries. Island92 (talk) 19:21, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
