I would like to highlight, on the economic section of the introduction, the allegiance of Peru to the Pacific Alliance and it's term "The Pacific Pumas". Lenoir9898 (talk) 05:59, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question: @Lenoir9898: What is exactly the change you want make? I saw that you just created account and head directly here. Mention it like "Change X to Y" or remove this and put this.  — Ammarpad (talk) 06:06, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not done: No answer.  — Ammarpad (talk) 07:18, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Ammarpad: I have edited a lot of wikipedia articles, both in spanish and english, but i noted that i couldn't edit the article about Peru so i decided to create an account. I would like to add/highlight the allegiance of Peru on the Pacific Alliance in the economic section of the introduction just like other countries have highlights of it's economies on their respective articles.

Highlight the Pacific Alliance membership of Peru in the introduction.[edit]

I would like to add that part on the economic section of the introduction just like other countries have mentions of it's economies in their respective articles. This account is new, but i have done a lot of editings in the past in both spanish and english, but i noted that i couldn't edit this particular page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lenoir9898 (talkcontribs) 04:46, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Lenoir9898: I'm not completely clear on what you're asking for. I'm guessing what you want is something like this from the lead in the Colombia article:
Colombia is a middle power and a regional actor with the fourth-largest economy in Latin America,[4] is part of the CIVETS group of six leading emerging markets and is a member of the UN, the WTO, the OAS, the Pacific Alliance, and other international organizations.[15]
Is that correct? If that is, could you write exactly how you want it to appear in the article? And if anything you want to say isn't already in the article with a source, make sure to provide a source for it. Cheers, -- irn (talk) 13:41, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

First sentence in lede[edit]

@Ammarpad: Hello, Ammarpad. After posting this, I'll be reverting the description of Peru in the first sentence back to its original use of "country" (instead of "sovereign state"). But I think an explanation is merited, and I'll provide it here.

The original change (from "country" to "sovereign state") was made by an IP address as part of a series of similar edits made to other articles about countries. None of these changes were accompanied by an edit summary, nor was there any Talk page discussion prior to making the change. All of these changes were reverted either by myself or by another editor. When reverting back to the IP's preferred phrase. you justified it in your edit summary by saying (essentially) "the IP's not wrong -- Peru is a sovereign state". And that, of course, is true. But "country", "nation" and "state" are all equally correct words and none of them are "more correct" than the others. More to the point, there is no uniformity on Wikipedia as to how countries should be described in the initial sentence. Indeed, there are some that don't use any of those words -- they go directly to describing the form of government (e.g., "The United States is a federal republic", "Italy is a unitary parliamentary republic"). And in the absence of this uniformity, there needs to be a justification for change that goes beyond "well, my preferred version isn't incorrect". This is especially true for this article here, which began to take on its "Wikified" appearance back in 2002. At that very early stage, the first sentence read "Peru is a country ...". That language remained unchanged for more than fifteen years, until the IP decided that their way was better. Such long-standing stability should be respected and not undone without discussion.

You might be aware that there is currently some controversy about how the first sentences of country articles have become increasingly loaded with technical detail. I see the IP's desire to use a technical term ("sovereign state") instead of the common one ("country") as falling into this same area of concern. The Countries WikiProject would do well to establish a Manual of Style for these articles. But until they do, fifteen years of stability on this particular article is a strong argument for maintaining the status quo. And if you still feel strongly about making the change, I encourage you to start an RfC on the matter. I'll be happy to participate in it, especially given that such an RfC might be the catalyst for standardising the way the information is presented in all country articles.

I'll be happy to discuss this further with you and I look forward to hearing your comments. NewYorkActuary (talk) 17:05, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to replace the flag[edit]

The article is inappropriately using the state flag, which is only used by the government in official state-sponsored events. The most adequate version to use would be the civilian flag, which can be used by anyone not representing the state. Also, the spanish version of the article is using the civilian flag. Demand, not just "suggest" you friend. --JkMastru (talk) 05:19, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Its actually a hard decision. But I think we should use the "official" or "constitutional" flag, if there is one. GucciNuzayer (talk) 18:47, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

imperfect parallels[edit]

Peru (/pəˈr/ ; Spanish: Perú [peˈɾu]; Quechua: Piruw Republika [pʰɪɾʊw]; Aymara: Piruw Suyu [pɪɾʊw]), officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú), …

Obviously the Quechua form given is equivalent to Republic of Peru and República del Perú. What about Aymara Suyu, does that correspond to Republic or to something like land? The simple forms ought to be in one group and those with an element meaning 'Republic' in another group. —Tamfang (talk) 05:49, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

regions or departments?![edit]

There's complete chaos in naming the Peruvian administrative divisions on WP. This article's section Peru#Administrative_divisions claims there are 24 departments plus Lima Province but links to Administrative divisions of Peru, which says there are 24 regions (subdivided into provinces) plus Lima Province and links to Regions of Peru. That article explains in a chaotic way that apparently legislation was passed according to which the departments have been or are to be turned into regions, but it doesn't really explain what the result is. On the contrary, its introduction claims the process has been completed but its section has the heading Regions_of_Peru#Departments but simultaneously lists them as regions!

And then there are editors who move individual articles back and forth between names switching region/department such as has happened with Department of Loreto and Department of Huancavelica. What is the real situation and please fix this mess immediately, at least on Peru! --Espoo (talk) 15:41, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Espoo: Regions have been legally authorized, but no region currently truly exists (except for Callao). Oddly enough, each department has a separate Regional Government (Gobierno Regional) that rules over them. The departments are supposed to voluntarily unite to create regions (but none of them are doing it). The process of "regionalizing" Peru is anything but complete despite no progress seems to be occurring towards completing it. But, then again, that is not unusual for Peru.--MarshalN20 🕊 20:10, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

On the size of the word "(Spanish)" located in the text box of the article[edit]

I've tried. I've failed.

There's this text box that every Wikipedia article has. It's always located on the right side of the first paragraph of every Wikipedia article. I don't what's it called. But it needs an urgent (simple) change: the irregular distribution of the size of the word "(Spanish)" displayed in the text box. Let's see how it's distributed:

In the motto, (Spanish) size is good

Anthem: (Spanish) size is too small

March: (Spanish) size is good again

National seal: (Spanish) size is small again!!

Please, someone, change it! I don't know how to do it. --RicardoMontano2323 (talk) 19:38, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The appropiate flag to display.[edit]

The status of the flag in Peru is similar to the German flag: The flag with the coat of arms is the STATE FLAG, which means it should only be used by the state in official events (i.e, the goverment's website, state buildings, etc). Elsewhere, the flag without the coat of arms is the most appropiate version to display and should be used by anyone who is not representing the goverment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lenoir9898 (talkcontribs) 22:05, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Should I display the flag with the coat of arms[edit]

The flag of Peru without the coat of arms is technically the civil flag of Peru. The flag with the coat of arms is the state flag of Peru. Both flags are known as the bandera nacional (national flag), but the flag without the coat of arms is also known as the la enseña nacional (The national ensign) Would it be okay for me to use the state flag of Peru (with the coat of arms) as the main flag of Peru under the Wikipedia article about Peru, or leave the civil flag without the coat of arms as the Peruvian flag displayed for that article? Trim the lead[edit]

I find that the lead has much historical detail. Maybe too much, for example, two gratuitous facts about ancient Peruvian civilizations and two independence-related dates 1821 and 1824. Such details may make it less clear for the reader to quickly get a grand picture of Peruvian history from the lead. If some of this is trimmed down it could be worth considering to include one sentence of either social, economic, religious or colonial history. Dentren | Talk 10:57, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Peru's National Flag[edit]

A user from Norway is constantly changing the National Flag of Peru and using the State flag (Pabellón Nacional) which is the flag used by the government. Peruvian constitution states that the National flag doesn't include the coat of arms. The Spanish Wikipedia for es:Perú is also consistent with this usage. 190.21.32.76 (talk) 10:34, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is COVID death toll worth mentioning here?[edit]

It's strange that the article talks about how the military enforced a quarantine and people protested the head of state in response, without mentioning anywhere in the article that Peru's death toll per capita is by far the highest in the entire world (something around 640 dead per 100k; only Bulgaria comes close at five-hundred something). It seems like these events are tightly linked. Is there a reason Peru's status as highest in COVID fatalities not mentioned? TricksterWolf (talk) 20:17, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV tag[edit]

Edit history shows heavy editing and content removal with summaries clearly revealing ideological motivations, especially in regard to the recent political instability in the country. I've tagged it for WP:NPOV so that these issues can be addressed by more neutral editors. Ppt91talk 22:09, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What content is the problem??? Moxy- 23:24, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Moxy Here are two recent diffs 1, 2. I am not saying that the tag was the best solution--in fact, I wasn't quite happy with the idea precisely for the reason you mentioned in your edit summary when removing it--but at the very least, I wanted to highlight what I considered to be, at least to some degree, an example of POV-pushing that seems to have become more pronounced in the least year or so, aligning with the increasingly polarized political situation in the country. One thing I noticed in particular is the article's tendency to be either overtly praising of Fujimori and his legacy or too critical of him to a point where it basically portrays modern-day Peru as a semi-dictatorship without sufficient explanation or balance, and both of which distort the current economic and political realities. The lead, for example, included an overview of recent political upheavals in a tone that seemed quite biased; now, it has no mention of it at all. While I have been following the recent developments in the region, I am by no means not a specialist on Peru's history or LatAm geopolitics more broadly, which is why I wanted to share my observations so that other editors could hopefully step in and take a closer look. I hope this clarifies things a bit. Ppt91talk 20:54, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ppt91: I am just now seeing your comment. How is the current intro? Is there anything in particular that could provide more balance? A lot has happened in Peru in the last few years. WMrapids (talk) 16:13, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@WMrapids Thanks for your reply! I've edited the intro a bit, including summarizing some of the content relating to most recent political developments. I believe that the coverage of the country's politics still needs a lot of work, ideally from neutral editors, though I am not quite sure I have the sources/knowledge to do that. I'd certainly welcome any editors willing to step in! Ppt91talk 16:35, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ppt91: Neutrality on Peruvian topics is very difficult due to the extremely polarized nature of politics (tell me something new, right?).
To explain my edits and give you some context since you say you are not too familiar with Peru's politics:
The introduction seems to be better now and more recent information (barring something extraordinary) can be placed in the body to avoid WP:RECENT. Thank you for your help! WMrapids (talk) 17:47, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism in the introduction[edit]

Since february i've been deleting vandalism edits made to the introduction, depicting a nonexistent congress-led dictatoship and a fictional "repression". These edits are being made by the leftovers of the protesters of the beginning of the year. I've restored the neutrality of the introduction from the Dec 2022 version. Please refrain from adding such political topics in the introduction, as that section must maintain it's neutrality. More vandalism edits will be removed as many times as neccesary. Lenoir9898 (talk) 02:56, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be making WP:BLUDGEON edits as a WP:SPA. Could you provide some discussion regarding these edits? WMrapids (talk) 16:09, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lenoir9898 I second @WMrapids comments. I have previously posted a notice on your talk page and you still continue WP:BATTLEGROUND approach. Your edits are far from neutral, you're making accusations without any evidence (edits are being made by the leftovers of the protesters of the beginning of the year), and your biased rhetoric indicates you're not here to build an encyclopedia. I highly recommend taking a step back before your behavior will becomes disruptive enough to warrant a block. Ppt91talk 15:46, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
