Oil in Prudhoe Bay[edit]

What conditions lead to the formation of so much oil in an area this far north? Was this area previously south and drifted north over 10's of thousands of years? Or was the climate so much warmer this area supported lush plant growth at some point in time?

All of the above, to some extent. The source rocks are of three ages - Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. Although this part of Alaska was not particularly far south at those times, the climate was indeed significantly more uniform and warmer worldwide then (65 to 250 million years ago). Dinosaur fossils and trackways exist in the Cretaceous of the North Slope. --Geologyguy 16:40, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Revealing demographics?[edit]

That's exactly what I was thinking. From the perspective of someone from the UK, to see these kind of statistics being published about a single family seems utterly ridiculous. So where's the Bay?[edit]

Demographics[edit]

Are the "several thousand transient workers" included in the 2010 population (2,174)? The wording is ambiguous. And if these are not included, what caused the massive population boom between the 2000 (one famlily of 5 people) to 2174 in 2010? Iapetus (talk) 16:20, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Climate data[edit]

I restored the original climate data box from 2016 because it is linked to a verifiable reliable source, and the one we had replaced it with was not. The myforecast.co site simply guesses its data based on nearby towns, and has a spotty coverage area, such that even a town that has a weather station can be missed. In some climates this is fine .... but in cold, sparsely settled, mountainous areas, this can produce wildly inaccurate data. I reverted to the original source, the Desert Research Institute, which operates the Western Regional Climate Center. Also I touched up the data, because either it has changed in the five year period, or the original author didn't pull all of the data from that source .... the original table was incomplete anyway, as it lacked the record lows. —Soap— 23:35, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
