Bob Hawke[edit]

With regard to Bob Hawke feel free to put in the wording you want - by the way the 2007 election will be for Howard what the 1961 election was for Menzies almost - it will be 11 years since there was a Labor Government (12 years in 1961) and 14 years since Labor won an election (15 years in 1961). Transfinite induction[edit]

The first step above is actually redundant. If P(b) follows from the truth of P(a) for all a < b, then it is simply a special case to say that P(0) is true, since it is vacuously true that P(a) holds for all a < 0.

You deleted this paragraph from transfinite induction. I think you completely failed to understand it. Suppose I prove that if { for all a < 0, P(a) }, then P(0). Since there exists no a < 0, it is vacuously true that for all a < 0, P(a). Consequenly my proof that if for all a < 0, P(a) then P(0) necessarily implies that P(0) is true. That is a way to prove P(0).

Now suppose I prove that for any b, if { for all a < b, P(a) }, then P(b). I said for any b, and that implies in particular for b = 0. Thus that single step proves both P(0) and induction step. Michael Hardy 23:18, 3 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi Mark - Mayne's allegation that Hugo Kelly wrote his own Wikipedia entry is entirely false. I am not Hugo Kelly - much of the material in the original article was taken from an interview I did with him which is on my blog - http://bekk.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_bekk_archive.html

I would agree here, and to be honest, even if it was Hugo Kelly, what of it? So long as they write neutrally and in an encylopedic tone then I think we should keep the material. However, I don't agree that we should be using a straight copy & paste from a blog. There is altogether too much trivia in the article. I'm pretty sure we didn't have a favourite food in there! Only that Hugo's hobbies are eating my cooking, and sleeping - which they are. But anyway, it's certainly a work in progress at the moment. Oh, and partner is fine.

Subst[edit]

Hi, when you post a welcome message to a newcomer, could you use {{subst:welcome}}, {{subst:welcome2}}, etc., instead of just {{welcome}}, {{welcome2}}, etc. It means that the text of that particular template will be added to the talk page of the user instead of the user just seeing a sort of mirror image of it. Two advantages are that if the actual template is vandalized, the message you have sent will not be altered in any way, and also less load is placed on the server. Regarding my edit here, I think it's fair to say that I mucked this one up. I saw the news site and assumed that the time I'd seen the previous night had been corrected, then saw other sources which had the original time. All in all, not one of my finer Wikipedia moments. You do what ya gotta do.

Universally Unique Identifier[edit]

Hi, I've removed the number that shall not be mentioned from Universally Unique Identifier in order to clean up after the recent spam storm. The issue of when it is appropriate to publish it on Wikipedia is being discussed actively on the lists and on Talk:HD DVD encryption key controversy. At I understand it, this effort to publish the key was in vain, as it is on the revocation list and is therefore public knowledge (see the talk page for more info). Wikimedia Australia incorporation meeting[edit]

Hi there Markhurd! As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation has recently approved Wikimedia Australia as an official chapter. In order to acknowledge this, and to appoint an interim committee, approve our statement of purpose and our rules, and appoint a Public Officer, Wikimedia Australia will be having a meeting at Computerbank in Melbourne. For those of us who are located in other cities, we shall be holding conference calls to the main meeting.

I have an IP address that gets changed often, and apparently it got changed to the IP of some vandal. I did not intentionally obliterate anything. Judging by the time stamp, User:TomCat4680 posted first. i might have had the page on my screen too long without refreshing and unknowingly put my comments over his. Your answer was rather woolly. Your first point was that the use should be fair use under US law, which is wrong; Wikipedia's fair use rules are far more strict than that. You also referred to the image needing a rationale, which is true of all fair use images. I am looking to see what distinguishes images of living people from others. See also foundation:resolution:licensing policy.
I wouldn't like to say exactly what I expect people to say to that question, because obviously then it gives the opportunity of gaming the system to others. But I hope what I said helps. Stifle (talk) 17:48, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your edit to Stolen Generations[edit]

Ah, I understand now; thanks for your explanation. I'd just assumed it had been left over from a time when there were many [verification needed] tags. Hence the first said [verification needed], the second [another verification needed], the third [yet another verification needed] and so on. Totally silly of me, but that's what happens when I edit too late at night.

I hear what you're saying about the templates... maybe something to bring up at the Village Pump? Or maybe ask at the reference desk, since I'm sure this kind of thing must have come up before. For now I've implemented a slightly inelegant solution, which will hopefully clarify the purpose of the tag for other editors.

On a totally unrelated note, my thought on the question posed on your userpage ("Should NSD refer to Natasha Stott Despoja?") is yes — because her name is hard to spell and remember. In fact, I think I'll add it now.

I can confirm there's a problem on Chrome and Firefox (at least) as of the last 6-12 hours (depending upon caching perhaps). However, the script just uses regexs and simple[r 1] HTML DOM APIs supplied by the browser and a quick review of the source of the Special:Contributions doesn't show an obvious change or problem. While formulating the above comment, the responses at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Java_not_working? have determined the problem. I'm working on a solution now.

May 2010 Hello, Mark... sorry to trouble you with this, but sometime in the past eight hours a glitch developed with respect to your very useful script. I'm using it on the Monobook skin, and what happens is that it now removes all entries from my "Special:Contributions" list, not just those pages where I am the most recent contributor. (As there are no changes listed in the code for over two weeks, I'm presuming that it is a Mediawiki issue that's affecting the script.) Hi. I argued with another... valued contributor... over the whole Harvrefcol thing, and he admitted that Harvrefcol is an extant format: LSA, the format of the Linguistic Society of America.   • From an admittedly selfish point of view, it is very discouraging when hours and hours of tedious work is discarded in the name of some rather dubious goal of "standardization". What actual good does standardization do the reader? None... Less selfishly, the bad taste is tripled when the standard being championed is itself is decidedly nonstandard. I also replied on the talk page of template:Citation, but from very very very long experience I know my voice will not be heard (and only sketchily acknowledged, if at all). I speculate that template editors love the current output because 1) it's their baby; they worked on it, and 2) it's just too much trouble to make things follow the rest of the world. Thus the template coders define standards according to their own needs and desires, rather than that of multiple real-word audiences. Question about hidetopcontrib.js[edit]

Hi Markhurd! Your User:Markhurd/hidetopcontrib.js was mentioned on Help talk:User contributions. It sounds great, so I tried it out. Although I've tried creating User:GoingBatty/common.js‎ and adding it to User:GoingBatty/vector.js, bypassing my IE7 cache, deleting temporary files, and rebooting my PC, I don't see any difference on my contributions page. I tried reading your documentation at User:Markhurd/hidetopcontrib and don't understand the sentence. "Clicking again undoes the hiding." Clicking what again? There are some known issues with IE, but they don't affect my viewing of your contribs (using Monobook).
You should disable one of your two importscripts.

I'm not in a position at the moment to test the Vector skin. To see what it should look like, you could try changing to Monobook and going to anyone's Contributions page. You should see an extra "show/hide top" tab next to "special page", and the effect should be to remove pages that are marked as (top), and if you add my suggestion of userHideAllSubsequent=true; it will also hide all but the most recent edit of any page. That's the "known issues in IE". You'll see it works fine in other browsers. I see you've created new IP talk pages since I checked your contributions above (and you emphasised the issue by looking at User_talk alone). I don't have time at the moment to confirm how to fix it in IE but I did anyway! (and it is better that the original version I started with where failures like this caused the script to stop and the rest of the contributions were not processed at all). Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted[edit]

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Invitation to Adelaide Wikipedia Users Group meetings[edit]

We meet at UniSA's City West campus, and our 23 July meeting will have a guest speaker from the National Trust of SA.

Victor Harbor / Victor Harbour[edit]

Hi Markhurd, there are actually six places in SA with the "Harbor" spelling, not just three. (I found this out some time ago by sending an emailed query to the Geographical Names Board. Because that would be considered "original research", I haven't bothered to make any changes to the Wikipedia articles.) The reason I was given for this spelling is that it's how the names were gazetted. Because parliamentary draughtsmen were lawyers trained in Latin, it seems that there was a mistaken assumption that the word was derived from Latin, rather than from Old English herebeorg, from here troop, army + beorg shelter (Collins English Dictionary). The same spelling also occurred in the name of the Harbors Board, because that body was set up by an Act of Parliament. Given that people keep asking questions about this spelling, and come up with fanciful answers such as "errors made by an early Surveyor General of South Australia" or even "based on an early American map", it's a little surprising that the real reason hasn't come to light before; my own guess is that parliamentary draughtsmen don't like to admit to making mistakes, even those made by their predecessors. The category has "Australia" in the title because it's main article is Victoria (Australia). It's also a subcategory of Category:Victoria (Australia), which used "Victoria (Australia)" consistently throughout the tree. New Challenge for Oceania and Australia[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Fair Use in Australia campaign update[edit]

I'm writing you this followup message, as you took the time to vote in support of a Wikipedia banner campaign for the introduction of Fair Use in Australia.
After much planning and coordination with the WMF, Australian Digital Alliance, and Electronic Frontiers Australia, as of Monday the banner-campaign is active on English Wikipedia to a portion of logged-out readers in Australia (technical details). The banners direct people to this page on Meta: FairCopyrightOz. That page, alongside lots of information, further directs people towards the campaign website faircopyright.org.au where Australians are invited to write to their local MP to express support of Fair Use. If you are interested in supporting this campaign, please, send a letter yourself using the template letter provided at that link.
Furthermore, and with the support of the ADA & EFA, we have received fantastic media coverage - with article "Fair Use: Wikipedia targets Australians in bid to change the law" appearing on page 2 of the Sydney Morning Herald and page 10 of the Melbourne Age on Monday's edition. It was for a time the 3rd most read article the Fairfax website, and Fair Use was "trending" on Twitter in Australia. We are running the account @FairCopyrightOz on twitter, and we are tracking other press-mentions on the talkpage on Meta.
Today, day 2, we published a detailed post about the campaign on the Wikimedia Blog, ran an "Ask Me Anything" Q&A session on the Australia page in Reddit, and [by happy coincidence of timing] the article History of fair use proposals in Australia appeared on the en.wp mainpage as a Did You Know. [The creation of that "history of..." article was a specific request arising from in the community consultation in which you voted].
And, most importantly, in a little more than a day nearly 800 letters to MPs have been sent encouraging them to support the Productivity Commission's recommendation to adopt Fair Use in Australia. I urge you - please add your own message.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message[edit]

Hello, Markhurd. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
