Requested move[edit]

BroadwayBroadway theatreBroadway currently redirects to Broadway (disambiguation). There are a large number of links to Broadway, and the vast majority of them appear to be about Broadway theatre. Currently, Broadway theatre has about 2000 articles linking to it, whereas Broadway (New York City), the second most common meaning of the word, has about 200 articles. It seems to me that because the primary meaning of Broadway is Broadway theatre, the article should redirect there with a disambiguation link at the top --Bill 20:29, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Add *Support or *Oppose followed by an optional one-sentence explanation, then sign your vote with ~~~~
 • Oppose - hundreds of links to other uses is significant. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 20:42, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
 • Oppoes - not a good idea - there are other meanings of the term. I have been disamb'ing a lot of them, and with some help, it won't take long. --rogerd 17:38, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

revert of move to Broadway (disambiguation)[edit]

The following conversation was copied from User talk:Larry V and User talk:Rogerd

I disagree with your move of Broadway to Broadway (disambiguation). A couple of months ago, I spent a lot of time disambiguating Broadway, and I found that by far, the vast majority of links to Broadway (> 80%, would be my guess) needed to be redirected to Broadway theatre. There aren't very many now, since I fixed them all recently. --rogerd 01:39, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure that you are correct in that most links to Broadway refer instead to Broadway theatre. However, it doesn't make very much sense to have "Broadway" redirect to "Broadway theatre." Broadway theatre is an entity that, while intricately interwoven with Broadway the street, is nevertheless distinct from that street. Also, the fact that most "Broadway"s have to be redirected to the theatre article in and of itself indicates that, as a place/street/etc., most references (if not errant Wikilinks) to "Broadway" are to the New York City street, which, naturally, is the seat of Broadway theatre. References to Broadway theatre should point to that article (which you yourself took care of); any references to simply "Broadway," however, should point to the NYC street, seeing as how it is very unlikely that the intended article would be that about Broadway in New South Wales, or Broadway in New Jersey. —Larry V (talk) 03:39, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that (lazy) editors will insert references to Broadway, like "Matthew Broderick appeared on Broadway in The Producers" when clearly they didn't mean to reference the street. I know, I fixed hundreds of these. With your change, it will be very difficult to find these errant edits and point them to the right place. By having them go to a disambiguation page, then it will easier (especially of you use WP:POP) to correct them. With your change, they will go to the NYC street, making it necessary to go through the correct references to the NYC street to find the errant links. --rogerd 03:48, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I guess I see your point. You're probably right about those lazy editors. I would change it back … but the redirect is getting in the way. Seeing as how you're the administrator between us two, I think you'll have to do it. =) —Larry V (talk) 03:54, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Broadway Theatre[edit]

The theatre, by that name is very different from the theatre in general in NYC being referred to as Broadway theatre... There should be an article on this and the guidelines do provide for a red link that needs an article. Doc 01:46, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganization[edit]

I separated Broadway theater from articles about theaters named Broadway, since they're not really in the same categories. Also, I moved the physical theaters below the streets, since the theaters are named after the street. --Mosmof (talk) 12:35, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Streets[edit]

Should we mention somewhere in the article that Broadway is a common name for streets in the United States? Purplebackpack89 (talk) 18:27, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The entymology of Broadway is already highlighted via the link to wiktionary:Broadway at the top of the article. FWIW, the origin is, unsurprisingly for an English compound word, English rather than American. It means simply "wide road". Andrew Oakley (talk) 11:25, 3 November 2009 (UTC) (near Broadway, Worcestershire, England)[reply]
I'm having second thoughts. It probably could do with a very short header stating how common the name is, and why. I'll have a go. Andrew Oakley (talk) 11:23, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Broadway, London - why in places category ?[edit]

Apparently it is a street in London so should be among other streets In the British Isles.

Right! that's it. I'm moving it. --Trombek Bombek (talk) 17:25, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Broadway (Everett)[edit]

I added Broadway in Everett. Google Maps Proof --97.113.175.151 (talk) 16:10, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Existence is not the only criteria for an entry. An existing Wikipedia article needs to at least mention the usage. olderwiser 18:22, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

White space[edit]

@Slightsmile: not sure what you're trying to do here. In desktop view adding Clear has introduced unnecessary white space. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 13:26, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Shhhnotsoloud: I don't get it. I've tested at various zooms and sizes on my 23 inch and it gives just the opposite. And again after seeing this post. Pre "clear" have to scroll down two screens past the long ToC before seeing the content. When I put the "clear" it gives a small space beside the Wiktionary box but the content starts showing beside the ToC. Now I'm worried. Maybe my user page isn't as clean and tight on other screens as it looks on mine. SlightSmile 14:22, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Slightsmile: here's my view:

I haven't seen clear used below the TOC on any other disambiguation pages. Your user page looks fine, by the way! Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:13, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Shhhnotsoloud: This is what I see without the Clear.
Sorry. Problem with the image. Trust me, for some readers/users the article's layout is unacceptable the way it is. SlightSmile 17:44, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen disambiguation pages where someone other than myself had added a Clear so I'm not the only one. I think that a small white space beside the Wiktionary box that a Clear creates for some (or many) readers/users is a reasonable trade off for those who would otherwise have to look and scroll through that big ugly white space. I won't argue with this one but I will fix disambiguation pages as I encounter them as a reader. Btw I found it helpful that you checked my user page, thank you. SlightSmile 14:45, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
User:Slightsmile, do you by chance use Internet Explorer? The behavior you describe sounds like an IE aberration -- I seem to recall some discussions of this before (don't recall where, perhaps WP:VPT) and the upshot was that IE didn't render html per standards. Using clear is a sort of kludge that fixes it for IE. Standards-compliant browsers don't have any problems with the display. olderwiser 18:28, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Bkonrad: Yes. But regardless that small spacing Clear gives beside the Wiktionary box isn't really bad compared to what IE readers have to look at. SlightSmile 19:53, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I wasn't arguing not to use clear. Just trying to give some context. olderwiser 20:34, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I wasn't sure. That was actually helpful, thank you. I suspected it might have been something like that. SlightSmile 20:39, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Slightsmile: In the spirit of Help:Whitespace (Avoid "fixing" white space issues which are peculiar to your combination of screen/window and font sizes, choice of browser, image settings, and so on. Check with other settings or systems, or ask other editors to do so.), I've asked for expert help at the helpdesk and a couple of other places.
