I changed "mock epic" to "work" because I don't think "Pale Fire" is mock anything (though some people do), and I really don't see any connection with an epic. I can't come up with a better word than "work".

Allusions to John Shade in other works of art For starters, there's Jack Butler's Martian Vampire named John Shade in the sci-fi novels _Nightshade_ and _Dreamer_ (and from reading the books it's obvious the repetition of the name is intentional).
