Newsboy Strike of 1899[edit]

Why is it that the Newsboy strike of 1899 isn't mentioned at all? It was not only the inspiration for the film/musical "Newsies" which is mentioned at the bottom of the page, it also seems purposefully ignored as the majority of this page is shed in a positive light. It seems like a bias issue at first glance.

Shooting incident[edit]

I am surprised this article doesn't mention Pulitzer shooting a lobbyist, mentioned prominently in New World Encyclopedia. As well, this newspaper seems to hint at another large issue not mentioned in this article. For anyone interested in the man, please consider adding information regarding these two events. a few questions...[edit]

1. He "exhibited such sincerity along with his oddities that he had pumped a half-amused excitement into a campaign that was normally lethargic." What oddities? And half-amused excitement? What is that supposed to me?

2. "On August 31, 1870, Schurz (now a U.S. Senator), Pulitzer, and other reformist anti-Grant Republicans bolted from the state convention" ...Why were they anti-Grant?

3. What are reformist newspapermen?

4. "After Tilden's narrow defeat under dubious circumstances" ....I know what those circumstances are, but many readers will not. This needs to be explained, even if it just in a dependent clause.

5. "he returned to St. Louis to practice law". Did he pass a bar exam? If so, it doesn't mention that in the article. Or was he practicing without having passed the bar?

6. "In April 1883, the Pulitzer family traveled to New York"...who was in the Pulitzer family? It isn't mentioned yet at all in the article.

7. "Pulitzer was prepared to give up"...give what up? the half million dollars?

"Jewish family"[edit]

His father was of Jewish descent. However, the German-language article says that his mother was Catholic and his brother became a priest. This would suggest that the children were raised in the Catholic faith. Moreover, the Catholic Church does not usually allow marriage with non-Christians, so his father may also have converted. But even if not: If his mother was Catholic it's not a "Jewish family", but at most a "mixed Jewish-Catholic family". 88.64.225.53 (talk) 07:20, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
