Literal meaning/Han Tu[edit]

Article needs literal meaning of this province name, and Han Tu. Badagnani 08:26, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Badanani. My dad's from Dong Nai, and even he is not sure of the etymology of the name. It's obviously Sino-Vietnamese, he said, yet a literal or colloquial translation of it into normal Vietnamese wouldn't make sense! Le Anh-Huy 20:36, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Nom Foundation says it's . The Chinese Wikipedia uses a different second character: . The fact that neither seems to make literal sense probably means that, like many southern Vietnamese toponyms, this was not originally a Sino-Vietnamese place name, but possibly one from the Khmer, Cham, or (non-Sino-)Viet language. Title of article[edit]

I've moved this back to the unaccented form, for two reasons. Firstly, there's the "most common name rule" - Vietnamese provinces are generally known in English without their accents. Secondly, there's the fact that we can't actually do it properly - some provinces can be put at their proper names, but others, due to software limitations, can't. This province is an example of one that can't be put at its proper place - the accents don't work with the software, producing "Äồng" instead of the correctly accented name. I personally think it's better to have no accents than to have half the provinces named with accents and half the provinces without. Just my opinion. -- Vardion 23:56, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Oops... Should merge with "Dong Nai"[edit]

I just added a redundant article under Dong Nai. I'm tired, so I will try to fix this tomorrow. --Ryanaxp 09:00, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)
