Scottish background[edit]

Malcolm McLaren is Jewish and was raised in a Sephardic Jewish family. [1]

As that article states, his natural father (who he had no contact with) was called Peter McLaren, and his mother and stepfather were both Jewish. Presumably Peter McLaren has some Scottish ancestry.

He sounds vaguely Scottish when he speaks sometimes, check out his spoken parts on his '80s albums, especially Waltz Darling. Those broad a's and o's and his rolling R's give him away a bit, though of course he's also cultivated a certain kind of dandy accent. Strausszek (talk) 16:01, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He didn't know his father, so unlikely he felt any connection. If you can find a source that describes him as Scottish, or not being English - or better still a quote, then there might be grounds for denying his Englishness. I don't know how McLaren self-identified in terms of nationality or religion. In a reality show called The Baron, which was recorded in 2007 and shown the following year on ITV1, McLaren pointed out that his name is Scottish, which perhaps indicated that he felt partly Scottish. Solo music career[edit]

Reference to 'Buffalo Gals' from the article at the link... A different song by the same name, juxtaposing extensive scratching with calls from square dancing, was released by Malcolm McLaren on his 1983 album Duck Rock.

Name[edit]

I don't have the source book(s) to hand but as his birth record states beyond doubt, Malcolm's surname was Mclaren not McLaren.

Emily Isaacs married Peter Mclaren in 1942 with Malcolm being born in Stoke Newington in 1946. After his parents parted Malcolm was raised by his maternal grandmother Rose Corre Isaacs. His mother, as Emily Mclaren or Isaccs, remarried in 1951 to Martin Levy or Edwards.

Malcolm was known as Malcolm Edwards up until his the death of his grandmother, although as father to his son he used her maiden name Corre. I’m not sure Malcolm knew his surname was Mclaren until this point. When he first started referring to himself as Malcolm Mclaren it was so often interrpreted as McLaren that he let it stick for sake of a quiet life (sic). My knowledge overlap here would suggest this was due to the prominence and death in 1970 of racing driver Bruce McLaren; the team that bears his name still maintains a rather high profile, but whatever.

An introduction to him by name should read: “Malcolm McLaren (born Malcolm Robert Andrew Mclaren) or some variation thereof if it wishes to be accurate. Kmitch87 (talk) 15:49, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The MacLeay book states his birth name was McLaren and he adopted Edwards later. OTOH, the Macleay book is also terrible. It appears to have lots of new and interesting research in it, but it doesn't cite any of its sources for stuff new to me and the writing style is really, really awful. Anyone else knows a lot about McLaren read it and have an opinion on it as a source? - David Gerard (talk) 16:55, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
McClaren was going by the name Edwards when he was at art school in the late 1960s, according to Sheilagh Brown, see p3 of the interview in Very. Brown should be a good source as she survived/remembers the '60s and has credentials. She worked with Quorum, Sheridan Barnett, taught at RCA, St Martins and was head of womenswear design at M&S. Greasy spoon garage??[edit]

The article states a Sunday newspaper found McLaren's father in a "greasy spoon garage". There's no such thing; a greasy spoon is a particular kind of cafe and a garage is either a filling station or a place to get vehicles repaired. Which was it?
