Untitled[edit]

I can't find Legendre's formula in the Englishpedia:

please would you so kind to tell me how do you call this in English and if you had an article about this? Thanks: Gubbubu 20:09, 26 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion with Lagrange[edit]

>his work on roots of polynomials inspired Galois theory; Does anyone know what he concretely did? I think that it confuses Legendre with Lagrange. --132nd 05:07, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The page says he's known for the Lagrangian. Can someone confirm that this is confusing Legendre with Lagrange? Skoozdag (talk) 19:41, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can see, the "work on roots of polynomials" that inspired Galois theory was indeed Lagrange and not Legendre. They apparently knew of each other however, as professional contemporaries, and in fact, the roots of Legendre polynomials are significant. However, when it comes to the methods of finding roots that inspired Galois theory, that was primarily Lagrange, and it doesn't seem correct to attribute it to Legendre here, so I took it out.Kemery720 (talk) 19:36, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

How is his name pronounced? Better if in IPA please. --Octra Bond 23:33, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is in IPA now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.53.52.21 (talk) 09:50, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ERRATUM[edit]

Take care about the picture, it's Louis LEGENDRE, and *not* Adrien-Marie LE GENDRE. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Legendre_(homme_politique)

This information has been strongly verified here : Proof : http://books.google.fr/books?id=eoMGAAAAQAAJ&dq=editions:02n1RXQ5uEKlRR2b

and I've received answers from the french "Bibliothèque de l'Institut de France". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.218.144.116 (talk) 15:16, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Would an editor please include the CORRECT portrait[edit]

Why include a silly caricature? If there's no good portrait, a silly caricature is not the best substitute. The best substitute is nothing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.232.191.16 (talk) 20:13, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As pointed out by the previous poster, the portrait of an unrelated politician also called Legendre (who was born in the same year) has been misrepresented everywhere as the portrait of the mathematician... That wrong portrait was duly removed from this Wikipedia article a few months ago, but someone put it back! It would be nice to eliminate that VERY COMMON mistake once and for all by displaying here what's apparently the only extant portrait of Adrien-Marie Legendre! That portrait is a sketch drawn before 1820 (it's therefore in the public domain) which can be found in one of the links appearing at the end of the article, namely: http://www.numericana.com/answer/record.htm#legendre —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.122.83.82 (talk) 10:57, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Removed - don't know where to find a correct portrait though, unless we use the caricature on that page. — PhilHibbs | talk 20:19, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for removing this pervasive erroneous portrait. Yes, the caricature on that page is the ONLY extant portrait and it's now in the public domain (no copyright). Could someone post it properly ASAP:

Caricature of Legendre: http://www.numericana.com/fame/legendre.jpg (100 x 125 pixels). The entire page it has been clipped from (next to J.B Fourier): http://www.numericana.com/fame/legendre-fourier.jpg (758 x 595 pixels). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.122.80.77 (talk) 00:46, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding explanation section[edit]

Interesting story! I thought a ghost jumped out at me when I came to this page after looking up Legendre transformation. I'll add a short photo debacle section to this article so others don't have to waste the time I did investigating this matter (which is similar to the wasted time I spent investigating the Robert Boyle photo destruction by Newton). Another common photo error is the mixing of Lazare Carnot's photo with his son's photo Sadi Carnot, such as in error on this page. --Libb Thims (talk) 18:11, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another portrait[edit]

There's also this portrait of him, it seems: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k8742069/f203.item --2A02:6D40:3B9A:A201:4169:46C6:34AF:C193 (talk) 17:52, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you can read the Conditions for use and make sure that we are allowed reupload the image to Wikimedia Commons (or to English Wikipedia if we cannot upload it to Wikimedia Commons), please feel free to do so (after downloading the image in as high resolution as possible). Although the current portrait is so much funnier :D —Kri (talk) 03:51, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Kri ,
Thanks to the person who shared above this 1) "Portrait given to Barral"
("Le portrait choisi pour notre livre a été fait sur un croquis donné par Legendre à Arago, en 1829, et transmis à mon père par le célèbre astronome." Translation: Barral says that the drawing of Legendre was given to his father by Arago. Source).
This image has been imported into Common here.
Two more portraits have been found (thanks to the persons of the Legendre's fr-wiki talk page) :
2) « pastel » de Lenclos is a copy of this vignette in Historica
3) Statute - Paris Hotel de ville : Commons link. Source : this book. (other quality version at Gallica). More infos at Orsay.
I hope this helps. Jurbop (talk) 10:14, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; that's great! Maybe we can create a gallery of all pictures now at the bottom of the page. In the last photo, is the statue of the correct Legendre? I see no first name, only the surname, so for all I know it potentially could be another Legendre. —Kri (talk) 23:31, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
