Why not include some actual examples of threnodies?[edit]

Poems[edit]

  • "Threnody" is the title of a famous poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson written in memory of his son, who had recently died.
  • Writer P. G. Wodehouse wrote a pastiche poem "Darkling: a Threnody" to highlight his contempt for modernistic styles of poetry.
  • "Threnody for the Lost" by fictional poet Esmund Chadleigh is central to the story of the book "Murder in the Museum" by Simon Brett ISBN 0-7531-1923-4 Pub: May 2004

Songs[edit]

  • Threnody is a Dutch rock band founded in 1989 which released two demo tapes "Ode to the Lamented" (1990) and "Profanation" (1992) before signing a deal with Massacre Records. Started as a death metal band ("As the heavens fall", 1993) they slowly evolved to a more rock sound on their latest album "Control" which was released in 2005. Most popular album of this "thinking man's death metal band" was "Bewildering Thoughts" (1995) which gave them a shared first place in the "best band of Holland" compition in 1995 and was released in Europe, Russia and Japan. The third album self-titled "Threnody" featured members Menno Gootjes (Focus, Ninevolt) and Ernst van Ee (Helloise, Highway Chile, Lana Lane). First members Henry McIlveen and Rene Scholte had pop and classical music projects "Gridlock" and "Shades of Silence" with Martijn Spierenburg (Within Temptation).
  • In 2001, Greek group Chaostar released an album titled Threnody.
  • Epitaphios Threnos is the lamentation chanted in the Eastern Orthodox Church on Holy Saturday.
  • The Ascent of Everest, a post-rock band, have a song called A Threnody (For the Victims of November Second) on their debut album How Lonely Sits The City!. November second is the date of the 2004 United States Presidential Election when incumbent president, George W. Bush, defeated Democractic Presidential candidate John Kerry and his running mate John Edwards.
  • Chimaira, a groove metal band, have a song titled "Threnody", which appears on Masters of Horror, Vol. 2, the second soundtrack of rock music inspired by the Showtime series Masters Of Horror.
  • The Dead Science (an experimental pop band based in Seattle, Washington) has a track on theirs debut album Submariner called Threnody.
  • Digitonal included a song called "Threnody for the Lost" as a part of the as yet unreleased soundtrack for Danny Boyle's Sunshine (2007 film)
  • Divinity Destroyed, a rrogressive metal band, has a track on their album "Eden in Ashes" called Threnody.
  • Robert Fripp has a track on the Bridge Between (by the Robert Fripp String Quintet), called Threnody For Souls In Torment.
  • Ihsahn's 2008 album "angL" includes a track titled "Threnody".
  • It Dies Today included a song 'A Threnody For Modern Romance' on its album 'The Caitiff Choir'
  • Jack Lancaster's released Threnody for a Duck as part of The Rock Peter and the Wolf recorded on LP in 1975.
  • Liszt's piano series Années de Pèlerinage includes two 'Thrénodies' set in the context of the Villa d'Este.
  • Anni-Frid Lyngstad, a former ABBA member in her post-ABBA solo singing career, has also recorded a musical version of the Dorothy Parker poem "Threnody" which can be found on her 1982 album "Something's Going On". Anni-Frid has been quoted as describing the poem as something that has inspired her through tough times. The music was written by Roxette member Per Gessle.
  • Rotting Christ, a Greek black metal band, has a song from their 2007 album Theogonia is called "Threnody".
  • Two Gallants, San Francisco duo, recorded a song entitled Threnody In Minor B for their 2006 album What the Toll Tells on Saddle Creek Records.
  • Veronica Lake, Michigan indie rock band, released a 7" entitled Threnody in 1993 on the Audrey's Diary label.
  • The music of the opening credits of the movie X-Files: Fight the Future, though in no way reminiscent of an actual threnody, is entitled "Threnody in X.".

In fiction[edit]

  • Threnody is a mutant character in the X-Men comics.
  • Threnody is a character in the Xanth series of novels by Piers Anthony.
  • Threnody is a category of song that the Bard class can play in Final Fantasy XI.
  • Threnody is used in a MUD, or Multi-User Dungeon/Dimension, by the name of Avatar. When a player at the lord tier dies, a threnody dirge is initiated to return their corpse, and belongings, to them safely.

RJFJR and Felix Folio Secundus, the list can be salvaged if split up between albums titled or with the word Threnody in the title, the same for songs, then anything else. I was wondering where Threnody from Xanth got to, and I see she is here. I edited the list a tad, splitting it up a bit. It was a big blur. LA (T) @ 05:19, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
