English Used[edit]

The English in both the main article and Talk is not too good. I intend editing the main article. Moitraanak (talk) 13:44, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Names of places[edit]

Starting this because it's an interesting discussion. At least in the infobox, the template docs call out to use the name in effect at the relevant time Template:Infobox_person#birth_place. For the article body, WP:MODERNPLACENAME talks context for the name, that in the present use the modern name but use an older name in appropriate contexts when modern sources do the same. So an interesting question, for sources published after Allahabad was renamed, what do they say? Ravensfire (talk) 17:53, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are several articles where besides the old name, the present name is given in brackets. Eg: Former PM Manmohan Singh's article. I had provided the same earlier. I think it is appropriate if we use the present-day name in brackets besides the older name, keeping both names. FlyJet777 (talk) 18:04, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Infobox_person#birth_place is very specific "Use the name of the birthplace at the time of birth" and also "What the place may correspond to on a modern map is a matter for an article's main text."
To use "Bachchan was born on 11 October 1942 in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad)" makes it sound that it was called Prayagraj when he was born, and Allahabad was a name only used before 1942, which is historical nonsense - Allahabad (now Prayagraj) is historically accurate.
There are other, similar, problems:-
"Bachchan's secondary education was at Boys' High School & College in Prayagraj" - not when he attended it wasn't
"He contested the Prayagraj's (formerly Allahabad Lok Sabha constituency)" - it was not the Prayagraj Lok Sabha constituency in 1984
We should not rewrite history - all events before October 2018 occurred in Allahabad, and only events after the renaming occurred in Prayagraj - Arjayay (talk) 19:16, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
