Alphabetical sort[edit]

I didn't understand what you did in the Alphabetical sort in Universities and colleges categories? Sridev 14:07, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Alphabetical sort[edit]

Categories will be sorted alphabetically by country name, not by first letter of category title:

For example Universities in Lithuania category Category:Universities -> Category:Universities|Lithuania

Ruble pictures[edit]

Per your request I deleted two Ruble pictures that you indicated where move to commons. However, they did not appear on Ruble after deletion so I am going to restore them. Can you look into the move and make whatever alterations are necessary to the Ruble article prior to requesting deletion? Thanks. - Tεxτurε 18:02, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Sorry, it was my fault. I replaced images in Ruble article. --EugeneZelenko 01:26, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Yes, of course, my bad. It must've been late and I simply confused the licenses, it should be PD, or rather PD-art. Feel free to move it to commons. Halibutt 11:04, Nov 20, 2004 (UTC)

Maps and Commons[edit]

Basically, any map I've made which doesn't contain a notice about its license is public domain — I've moved one or two such maps to Commons now. -- Vardion 05:37, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Licensing[edit]

It's important for all commons images to have a category both on Commons and on the wikis. This allows us to sort out images better. Neutrality/talk 02:57, Dec 21, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Eugene,
As far as I know, reproductions of two-dimensional works of art older than 100 years cannot be copyright-protected in the US (Bridgeman Art Library Ltd. v. Corel Corporation), allowing for most of the images of ancient paitings that are on Wikipedia. The explanation is contained in the following Template. Thank you for any feedback. Polish Złoty (PLZ)[edit]

I believe they are not copyrighted as such and there would be no problem with you scanning those as images. There are many official pages providing scans of the current Polish currency, so it should be ok. Among such sites is the site of the National Bank of Poland, the official organ of the Polish state entitled with issue of currency. Moreover, they allowed Emax to use their scans in wikipedia (details are here, in Polish) in accordance with these guidelines, so I believe there would be no problem at all. Also, you might want to take a look at this gallery. Does it answer your doubts? :) Halibutt 14:17, Apr 12, 2005 (UTC)

NowCommons versus IFD[edit]

Hi Eugene. I noticed you tag a lot of images with NowCommons, and list them on WP:IFD at the same time. Could you avoid listing on IFD, except in cases where there's some good reason to delete the image here? Maybe someday we'll get the ability to actually move images along with their revision history to the Commons. And if that never happens, well, presumably we can bulk-delete the NowCommons images at that point. Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 22:23, 21 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll add NowCommons only. --EugeneZelenko 03:34, 22 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

svislach[edit]

The policy is to use most common English name, with the exception of some obscure toponyms. Also, Lacinka is not an official Belarusian state orthography; their Latin geographical transliteration system is for a limited keyboard. So I guess we have a big job of reverting this premature "polonization". "Poliakam, liaham, panam, sobakam..." But frankly, I don't care anymore, with the exception of most idiotic cases. mikka (t) 01:38, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

stress sign?[edit]

could you explain what the need is in "stress signs" (like in "Засла́ўе")? it doesn't look ok for me since it breaks word in parts visually, and makes it unusable for those who doesn't speak Belarusian if they need, for example, copy it and paste some where. thanks --Monkbel 07:05, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

For those who want to learn more (it's encyclopedia at the end :-). People who doesn't will skip Belarusian/Russian anyway. --EugeneZelenko 13:31, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
hmmm... are you sure such pure linguistic questions as stress should be shown in encyclopaedia? It seems to me it is more a question of dictionary (wiktionary). A lot of languages have variable stress and I didn't see any to use the stress sign or smth.
Original name in encyclopaedia is included to show how to write name locally and it should not be mixed with pronunciation; pronunciation of course could be shown for those who want to learn more, but I think it should be in IPA form (for the whole word). For example, Polish use it - see Białystok and similar pages.
And - another point - what about those who want to learn more, but don't know cyrillics enough to distinguish stress sign from an usual letter? They will probably use this stressed version and will suddenly realise it goes nowhere - for example, it is unsearchable in Google. --Monkbel 14:01, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
And one more point: when I'm browsing under Windows, Firefox shows me combined letter in place of stressed letter, like á; but when I'm browsing under Linux, Firefox shows letter and stress sign separatedly, like а́. In such way it is even more unconvinient... --Monkbel 22:09, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Banknote file name convention[edit]

Hi, you have some absolutely beautiful Belarusian ruble images. But as a task for the Numismatics Project, the file names of banknote images have to be standardized. In particular, I would like to rename your images to the following

Belarus-1992-Bill-0.5-Obverse.jpg --> BelarusP01-50Kapeek-1992_a.jpg
Belarus-1992-Bill-100-Obverse.jpg --> BelarusP08-100Rublei-1992_a.jpg
Belarus-1994-Bill-20000-Obverse.jpg --> BelarusP13-20000Rublei-1994_a.jpg
Belarus-2000-Bill-500-Reverse.jpg --> BelarusP27-500Rublei-2000_b.jpg

I just want to get a permisson from you. This format will apply to all banknote image. You can see some examples at my user page. Thanks --Chochopk 12:14, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's reasonable for images already (not only mine) uploaded on Commons. You could upload them under new name, but you must replace existing one on all projects. Tools for doing this task still not ideal :-(
Better solution - to ask everybody who interesting in numismatics to upload new images under new "standard" names.
Just for you information: correct Belarusian words for our currency are "рубель/рублі/рублёў" (depend on quantity, see actual images).
EugeneZelenko 16:11, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
So I'm just wondering, did I transliterate the word correctly? Would it be rubel, rubli, and rublei? I only took 1 year of Russian and I'm sure there are differences between the 2 languages. --Chochopk 21:37, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Should be "rubel/rubli/rublyow".
Just the idea: will be great to avoid currency name in image name at all. Number is enough. One country doesn't have 2 currencies simultaneously. At least years of issuing are different.
EugeneZelenko 06:00, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the correction. I was using BNG method and apparently i ignored the 2 dots above "ё". I have a lot of renaming to do on my hard drive now. =) --Chochopk 00:50, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

your retagging[edit]

I reserve my judgement about your aggressive retagging of images taken by UA state news agency but since you persisted on "fairuse" tag and can't even wait for people to express their opinion on which tag better applies, could you at least take care of the fairuse tag you placed? What I mean is that the the text in this very tag says:

"To the person adding the tag: Please provide a detailed rationale explaining why this use qualifies as fair use."

Please provide such a rationale since it was you who applied this tag before another aggressive copyright checker puts the image up for deletion. Thanks, --Irpen 19:05, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian Coast Guard images[edit]

When a bunch of Canadian Coast Guard images had changes to how their liscence tags were represented, indicating they might soon get deleted I spent about six hours looking for images that could be released under free liscenses. I used google to search for images of CCG vessels and aircraft that had been taken by an employee of a USA federal agency as part of his or her duties. Those images, I believe, would be in the public domain.

So, I was very surprised to see some of them being removed. And I was very surprised that I didn't receive a notice on my talk page that someone had a concern over those images. I tagged a couple of images I had concerns over the liscense. I read, in the procedure, that the person who had the concern was supposed to put a note on the uploader's talk page and a tag, in the caption field, everywhere the image was used. It looks like neither of these steps where taken.

Do you know who else was involved in the removal of these images? Do you know who should have taken the step of putting the warning tags in the caption fields? Do you know who should have taken the step of putting a warning on the uploader's talk page? Do you know why these images were removed?

I thought I was careful, and only included images that were entitled to be distributed as free. Frankly, if was a lot of work. I have been contacted by other fans of the original CCG images, from the DFO site, that were released by the DFO with too many conditions to remain on the wikipedia. I have advised them that we have to obey the rules. So, I am pretty pissed off that it looks like those who recently removed these image don't seem to have bothered to have followed the procedure. -- Geo Swan 23:55, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All images that I deleted originate from http://www.airliners.net, where they were clearly marked as copyrighted. Users (most probably muppets) who uploaded them into Commons told lies about authorship. Copyvio tags presented during 7 - 10 days. These are reason for deletion.
I warned all users to do not do that in future.
If you want to use these images in English Wikipedia, please upload them here and use fair use in.
EugeneZelenko 14:43, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And I know I checked all the CCG images when I listed those with questionable copyrights and those with liscences I thought were unambiguously free enough for inclusion on the wikipedia. There weren't many that were unambiguously free. The first dozen, or half dozen I listed. The bulk of the ones listed were ones I uploaded. They were all images I found that qualified for a {PD-USGov} tag of some sort, not fair use. I found them all on government sites, either attributed to a serving member of the Armed Forces, or not attributed at all. I didn't get any of them from airliner.net.
Maybe airliners.net got some {PD-USGov} images from the same sites I did?
Sorry, but I think these images are more likely to be made by Canadian persons, so what do PD-USGov have commons with that fact? --EugeneZelenko 15:28, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I believe if you check the procedure for deleting images for yourself you will see that it requires those who are involved in the deletion of articles and images to put a warning tag in the caption field everywhere those images were used. This is absolutely necessary because, sometimes, new contributors aren't aware of the requirement to place a liscense tag, or are not familiar enough to place the correct tag. Sometimes what appears to be a copyright violation is actually an instance where the original creator of an image has decided to start contributing to the wikipedia. I believe it is absolutely essential that the procedures be followed. Images that only appear to be copyright violations, or have a liscense issue because an inexperienced contributor applied the wrong tag should not be removed, without proper warning.
You wrote that you thought it was more -likely- that images of Canadian Government vessels or Canadian government aircraft would be taken by Canadians than they would be taken by the employees of US federal agencies. Perhaps you didn't mean to say you feel authorized to remove images merely because you think it is -likely- that they are copyright violations. But that is what it looks like you were saying. It that is what you really meant I believe you are completely off-base.
Employees of American Federal agencies participated in joint scientific ventures on board Canadian vessels. Employees of American Federal agencies took pictures of Canadian vessels when they visited American ports. When wikipedia policy changes meant we shouldn't use the images from the Canadian Department of Defence or Department of Fisheries and Oceans sites, because they tried to impose a noncommercial restriction on end-users, I went looking for the limited number of instances when Americans took pictures of Canadian craft. Frankly, whatever you meant by your comment above, I think it was disrespectful to the efforts I put in to complying with the policy change.
I checked the history of my contributions during the day and a half I hunted for free images. As I mentioned above I found almost all the existing CCG images had been challenged. I listed them in a gallery, to give a heads-up to other contributors who worked on CCG articles. I also started a gallery of images with liscenses that seemed okay. There weren't that many. So I started the search I described above for additional PD images. It looks like the images you removed were previously existing images. But if I listed them it means I looked at the liscensing, didn't see an objection or see anything objectionable.
Perhaps there was something objectionable about the liscensing of those images that I missed. I believe we all have a right to expect the wikipedia policies and procedures to be carried out in a spirit of openness and transparency. Maybe, after all the work I did on those other images, I would have agreed with whatever objection you had to those images. Maybe I would have learned something by seeing the reasons you objected to the image.
-- Geo Swan 14:22, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Or maybe your muppets uploaded nonfree images over top of the free ones I found. When you suspect something is a copyvio you are supposed to check for earlier free revisions. Did you check this with these images?
I didn't see any overwrites. --EugeneZelenko 15:28, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Either way I think it is unfortunate that the proper procedure of putting the warning tag in the caption field whereever the images were used wasn't followed, to give those, like me, who had an interest in those images a chance to comment.
Telling me to upload them again is not acceptable, because finding those several dozen alternate free images represented a lot of work. It is not fair or reasonable to ask me to repeat that work if those involved in the deletion did not follow the procedure when I went to considerable effort to follow procedure myself.
-- Geo Swan 15:15, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I could only suggest you to look into commons:Category:Copyvio_-_March_2006 to be prepared for new deletions. Commons is not the place for copyvio. --EugeneZelenko 15:28, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I don't find this an acceptable suggestion. Contributors should not be called upon to monitor the various fora where articles and images they are interested in might be listed for deletion, just in case someone decides they should be deleted. Those who delete articles and images absolutely must follow the policies and procedures. In the case of articles that requires placing an {afd} notice on the article. In the case of images there is a requirement that a warning be placed in the caption fields of all the instances of the images' use.
I went to a lot of effort to help those working on CCG articles to follow procedure and comply with image policy change. And I expect those who choose to delete articles and images to follow procedure. -- Geo Swan 14:22, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
At first users, who uploaded copyvios on Commons, didn't follow policies and procedures.
If you doesn't have time to mark pages with copyvio yourself, I don't have time too (I need to remove these images from many projects, not just English Wikipedia). Please try to understand Commons administrators too.
So, I'll not delete this stuff in future, but somebody else will definitely do so. I had notified you, so it's up to you to do something or just argue with other people.
EugeneZelenko 14:45, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You can check for yourself. In the list of things to do when you suspect there is a problem with how an image is liscenced, right after putting a note on the uploader's talk page there is the requirement that someone put a warning tag in the caption field of every instance where the image is used. If you are only warning the uploader, then you are violating procedure. If your colleagues are only warning the uploader then they are violating procedure. It is that simple.
I don't think it matters how overworked you feel. You must follow the procedure. We get angry at vandals and copyright violators, because they don't follow the procedures. You must follow it too, no matter how inconvenient you and your colleagues find doing so. -- Geo Swan 15:41, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

be.wikipedia progress[edit]

About how much progress is being done to combine the Wikis? The last time we spoke, you were speaking with a Kazakh Wikipedian who works on MediaWiki scripts with language conversion. How is that going? Is there anything else that needs to be done? User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 04:19, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote draft code for Classic Cyrillic <-> Latin conversion similar to (Crimean Tatars converter). I need to do skeleton Classic <-> Official and framework code. Also I'm not sure in easy piping of 2 converters in case of Official Cyrillic <-> Classic Latin which should be done through Classic Cyrillic.
Unfortunately real life takes its toll now, but I hope I'll have time on weekends in next weeks.

Fair use rationale for Image:Sslpimage.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Sslpimage.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BigrTex 18:43, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Too_Bad_You're_Beautiful.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Petr Shelokhonov[edit]

Hi,

Could you please check the Belarusian spelling of Petr Shelokhonov's name?

See also the discussion at Talk:Petr Shelokhonov#Native spelling.

Thanks in advance. --Amir E. Aharoni 08:01, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Answered there. --EugeneZelenko 14:41, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.
I wondered about this, and now is a good time to ask:
If there's a э/е and an о/ё in a Belarusian word, then how can i be sure which one is accented? That's the trouble that i had with the word Беларусь, for example, and the same problem would be with Шэлахонаў. Or maybe Беларусь has two accents? --Amir E. Aharoni 14:51, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
ё almost always accented (exception радыё). о - always, otherwise it become а. е - depends. --EugeneZelenko 15:53, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Three things[edit]

First, Constitution of Belarus is at FAC now. Second, I have expanded President of Belarus and is now at good article candidates. The third thing, I think I just found photos of Batka while he was in the Frontier Guards and the Soviet Army. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 08:26, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Thank you for your job!
If you'll need, you could find a little bit about politics of Belarus in commons:Category:Freedom Day (Belarus).
EugeneZelenko 14:24, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link. I wonder if it would be hard to get a photograph of the the official residence of the President? I know the MVD patrols the building, so I do not wish to subject your family to arrest. If something easier could be done, could photographs of the Constitution be made? I have the Constitution (imported from Minsk) at my home, but I am not sure if I am able to scan that. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 18:42, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My mother told that she tried to make photo in that place (residency or old national library) and guards prohibited to do so. Funny link on this subject.
I'll ask my mother to make photo of the Constitution. Unfortunately I missed a chance to help you: I saw 1996 Constitution of Belarus with translations on 4 languages in Saratoga, CA used book store year ago...
EugeneZelenko 14:23, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Gah! I am in Southern California, so I could see if I can get them. If not, the English text is public domain, so I can just publish a book. About the photo of the palace; a friend of mine also try to photograph the flags on the building and he was chased away by the MVD. Send my thanks and regards to your mother. My Belarusy sheet music[edit]

I know for the United States anthem, there are many business that sell sheet music so people can perform the anthem. I was wondering if the Belarusian anthem sheet music is sold. The reason why is I am planning to make a better version of the sheet music, but the sources I have that show the music are either blurry or for the wrong song (such as Vajacki mars). Is there any way I could manage to get a clear set of sheet music? I am willing to pay. If you wish to talk about this off wiki, please let me know. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 08:37, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll ask my relatives. I hope this time it'll happens.
BTW. If you need sheet music of Vajacki marsz, I could scan it. Unfortunately it's copyrighted (modern edition).
EugeneZelenko 13:55, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have a copy of it (it is also copyrighted, but it is clear enough to where I could do it). Thanks. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 03:44, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Constitution of Belarus promoted[edit]

Now that the article is FA, there is no urgency to get the photographs of the Constitution. I still like to get real photos of the document, but since the article is now Featured, there is no "time limit," per say. Btw, this makes 6 Belarusian articles that are considered featured. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 08:47, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations! And thanks for doing this great job! --EugeneZelenko 14:34, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vector-Images.com images[edit]

So can we still use their images or should we have to review each image for copyright status? It feels like no one on here is buying the debate at the Commons at all. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 09:03, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Frankly said, I don't know... Formally terms of use was changed in Vector-Images.com (to use in any media), from other side people see other issues. Anyway I feel that replacement of with PD-XX-exempt ifs incorrect too due violation terms of use. --EugeneZelenko 14:06, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Вавёрка[edit]

What would be the correct way to write the Belarusian word "вавёрка" in Łacinka - wawiorka or wawjorka? I tried to understand it from Tarashkyevich's book, but it doesn't say much. See also my question at Talk:Belarusian Latin alphabet - you can reply there.

Thanks in advance. --192.118.34.228 07:35, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There was answer on mentioned page - Vaviorka. В is always v (w is not used in modern Łacinka). As far as I know j with еёюя vowels is used only at beginning or end of words. In the middle - with i.
You could also try Cyrillic-to-Latin converters: http://www.zedlik.com/pragramy/kir2lac-online/, http://www.pravapis.org/latin.asp (this site is not working currently).

Khatyn memorial[edit]

Well, I got a Flickr release for images of the memorial. You said they are copyrighted. How can we resolve this? User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 01:24, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since statue itself is copyrighted you need to contact sculptor or copyrights owner (if different). Or probably http://www.belgospatent.org (as collection agency).
Could you please give me a link to Flickr image, may be statue is not main subject of photo?
EugeneZelenko 14:52, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
[1]. All other Belarusian photos have been made into CC-BY-SA for us. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 15:46, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Zach, according to EugeneZelenko the CC-BY-SA license cannot be valid and the author of this beautiful photos is in violation of copyright laws merely by posting his own pics to Flickr. Am I right, EugeneZelenko? --Irpen 21:37, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I do not know where the original author (on Flickr) lives and I believe it will be wrong of me to ask him. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 06:45, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How is where he lives relevant? --Irpen 06:57, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No idea. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 07:37, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Since EugeneZelenko seems to think he knows the issue best, I would be interested in his opinion. Is the author of [2] guilty of appropriating the copyright and posting the copyrighted intellectual property under his own license? --Irpen 07:43, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Law of country where statue is permanently installed are relevant. In this case law of Belarus.
In case where sculpture is main subject on photo, copyrights of 2 authors involved: sculptor's and photographer's. In some countries (for example Germany) author of statue doesn't have any rights over photographer work, in some countries (USA, France, Russia, Belarus) he/she does. So Flickr user is not single owner of this "copyrighted intellectual property" in case of statue located in Belarus.
At least Flickr user doesn't have right to publish image under commercial license without explicit permission of author of statue. In current state this image are copyvio.
Question to Irpen: if you make photo of CD cover (main subject of image) - will you be a single owner of copyrights in this case? Why do you think case with statue must always be different?
EugeneZelenko 14:35, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't twist my words. I never said I approve theft. I am not an expert in copyrights but neither are you, at least not in the capacity of a pseudonymous Wikipedia user. I know that the statue case is different from the case you gave because I have heard of cases when people were sued or forced to stop using illegally used copies of copyrighted images but I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for publishing images of 1960s monuments they took themselves. Take for example, this page at the web-site of the Voice of Russia. Are you saying that the lawyers of this mainstream news organization are less familiar with copyrights than EugeneZelenko. The image is produced in countless books, tourist brochures, newspapers and magazines. Who are you to say that they all are criminals who steal someone's work? I believe the professionals in publishing a better familiar with copyrights than pseudonymous Wikipedia users, even those who claim to be copyright experts without basis and make it a habit to try to force their fringe views on this international project. --Irpen 17:11, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We are discussing "freedom of panorama" problem and all appraisals of personalities are irrelevant. So I'm expecting from you to support this level of discussion in future. And I'd like to remind you about assume good faith.
Again, return to the law. This is quote form Russian text (I hope you'll understand this better then previous quote from English translation):
Статья 7. Произведения, являющиеся объектами авторского права

1. Объектами авторского права являются:

...

произведения живописи, графики, скульптуры и другие произведения изобразительного искусства;

...

или сообщения для всеобщего сведения или когда оно используется в коммерческих целях;
My conclusion from this text - you can use pictures of copyrighted statue where statue is main subject for commercial purposes, if you have explicit sculptor/copyrights holder permission. So I'm not claiming that The image is produced in countless books, tourist brochures, newspapers and magazines. Who are you to say that they all are criminals who steal someone's work? There is legal way to use this images, so I'm assume that authors of countless books, tourist brochures, newspapers and magazines published since May 16, 1996, asked permission to do so. Otherwise it'll be their liability.
You could also read opinion of Belarusian lawyer and discussions in Russian Wikipedia Forum: 1, 2.
If you still not happy with these conclusions, I invite you do discuss this problem in Freedom of panorama, commons:Commons:Freedom of panorama, commons:Commons_talk:Licensing, where you could make valuable contribution.
As for lawsuits, as far as I remember discussions of commons:Commons:Deletion requests there were such in France about Louvre Pyramid and ligts of Eiffel Tower.

:) --Michael Romanov 06:20, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

:) --Michael Romanov 18:52, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
На самом деле из коллекции отца. Насколько помню серьёзно он этим занимался в 70-х - 80-х, а более старые марки скорее всего прости снимались с конвертов (отпаривались или отмачивались) - это и отразилось на их состоянии :-(. --EugeneZelenko 15:24, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Получил якобы от тебя сегодня по мылу какое-то приглашение, но не был уверен, что это именно ты его посылал, а не какой-нибудь червь. Если это всё же ты, о чем там речь - о каком каталоге? --Michael Romanov (talk) 05:46, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
:) --Michael Romanov (talk) 21:59, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

С уважением, --Michael Romanov (talk) 16:54, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:56, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand: Image:New_light_brown_sand.jpg[edit]

You say the copyright is bad but I have correctly listed

You ask for a higher resolution? Is this resolution of the copyright? Do you mean their is a different copyright resolution? If that is the case please let me know which resolution of the copyright document I should be using?Hhawk (talk) 20:56, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Or do you mean a higher bit rate for the photo? If that is the case what does the resolution have to do with the validity of the copyright? Please point me to the appropriate documents related to copyright that equate size and validity?

Image deletions[edit]

Mr. Zelenko, you deleted a banner I uploaded yesterday, citing it as "Copywrited Material", when in fact it is an image I created for our club about 10 years ago. I altered it a bit yesterday before uploading, but it is still completely my work, and does not belong, nor has it been copywrited, by anyone. Can you please reinstate it.... The image is Ecvlogo2.jpg at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_Clampus_Vitus .... Thank You, Jim Reynolds IRJR (talk) 19:58, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good Evening, please, can you translate in Belorussian the article, Inspector Rex Martin Weinek and Kaspar Capparoni? Thanks in advance![edit]

Good evening to you and regards from Campora San Giovanni. I write you regarding the articles of a note police television series: Inspector Rex. For better saying some principal actors of the international series. Martin Weinek (pronunced Vaynek) and Kaspar Capparoni. Weinek is the veteran of the Austrian series, now real member of the series international, as well as excellent agricultural and theatrical entrepreneur and an experienced wine-grower. Capparoni is the new entry of the series, but he has already worked and he works for international productions and with famous directors, I quote among everybody: Dario Argento. I think that the series will arrive within the winter 2008 thanks also to Rai International, that will be transmitted in 150 countries and in more than 70 languages, among which the Belorussian. Naturally if you will help me in this, me rechanged really the favor translating a biography or a geographical article in Italian and Sicilian. Belarusian elections[edit]

Hi! I found you through the Wikipedians by location category; could you help me find out the results by political party of the Belarusian parliamentary election, 2008? I haven't been able to do that so far, and the only likely sources I've encountered are in Belarusian... Thanks! —Nightstallion 15:58, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According election committee only 1.5% of elected deputies represent political parties. You could look into full list for representatives and senators (check for беспартийный/беспартийная). I looked briefly and found members of Аграрной партии, КПБ, ЛДП (check for член). --EugeneZelenko (talk) 03:33, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox[edit]

I do not understand the language and Google does not have a machine translation. From my minimal understanding of Russian alphabet, I guess the userbox says "this user believes Vilnius belongs to Belarus." Is that close? If yes, I am not surprised. There are many extremists who claim that "Lithuania" in Grand Duchy of Lithuania refers not to modern Lithuania, but to Belarus. One of them even made it to the scholarly circles. If I am not right, as I said I do not read the language :) Renata (talk) 16:45, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Belarusian castles[edit]

Hi thanks for the note. I made a couple of relaly short stubs the other day actually so I could make Template:Belarus-struct-stub viable. Hi, you deleted this photo on Commons, I got the original Flickr uploader to change the licenses, can you tell me if it is now ok to upload the photo under free? CTJF83 chat 04:17, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No. Photographer didn't allow to create derivative works. See also commons:Commons:Licensing#Well-known licenses. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:18, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, what does it need to be changed to on Flickr for it to be ok to upload? I'm working with the uploader to get the photo on Commons. The current licenses says the photo is free to share, so what's the problem? CTJF83 chat 17:38, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Current license doesn't allow to modify image. Licenses from Flickr which are acceptable on Commons are CC-BY-2.0 and CC-BY-SA-2.0. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:22, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. MBisanz talk 02:11, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A question[edit]

Hi. I noticed your edit to The Adventures of Buratino (1975 film).[4] Thanks. I was wondering about this line before your edit, and was not confident in that statement, since while a number of sources say that this was Belarusfilm's first children's film, others contradict this by pointing to their animated films (see Wikipedia's article on Belarusfilm) and you yourself have provided an example of a non-animated children's film that was earlier. Maybe it wasn't the first film shot by the studio for children, but maybe it was the first one by the studio with children playing the main roles? I'm not going to include this in the article at this point, yet would like to know if you can think of earlier films where that is the case. DVD 19:24, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PS I am planning on starting an article on About Little Red Riding Hood (ru:Про Красную Шапочку). Maybe you'd like to help? DVD 19:24, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think "The Adventures of Buratino" may be first very popular children movie, since it was shown very often on TV, but it's very vague statement :-) About movies with children actors as main characters: there were more early ru:Кортик (фильм, 1973) and ru:Бронзовая птица (фильм), but it were TV movies.
ru:Про Красную Шапочку is also great movie and I'll try to help. However, I'm not very good writer :-(
EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:07, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I haven't seen any of them yet, and the films from that cycle(there is one more) look very worthwhile. DVD 17:30, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There was also third one: ru:Последнее лето детства (but heroes are grown-up). These movies were translated often. And original books were popular too. I could attribute this to elements of mystery genre, what is always interesting for children/teenagers (ru:Зелёный фургон (фильм, 1983) is kinda of reflection :-) --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:56, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for another suggestion. My Russian teacher has me watching children's films and reading children's books again. I'll take these all to mind, and do my best to watch (and read) them soon. DVD 02:43, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I definitely agree with your teacher! I also (re)discovered international cinema couple of years ago: Italian neorealism, French, Japanese, Iranian...
If you are watching black and white movies, there are couple of very popular comedies: ru:Подкидыш (фильм), ru:Золушка (фильм, 1947). And older version of "The Adventures of Buratino": ru:Золотой ключик (фильм, 1939).

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 20:28, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Aces at the Wicnic[edit]

Hello, Eugene,

I hope that you have not rethought our discussion at the Wicnic. I hope that I did not make my request seem too troublesome. In short, I feel I need someone versed in Russian to save monolingual me from committing gross stupidities. Mostly, I need someone to verify spellings of the names on this list:

http://www.theaerodrome.com/aces/russia/index.php

I will use that as the beginning basis for my List of World War I flying aces from Russia. If you could run down that list above, and send me any necessary correction of names, I can get started.

I enjoyed talking with you at the Wicnic, and hope to see you again.

Hi, George!
It was wonderful conversation!
Below is Russian names and English transliterations as well as links to relevant articles in Russian and English Wikipedia.
Relevant categories: Category:Russian World War I flying aces, ru:Категория:Российские лётчики Первой мировой войны, pl:Kategoria:Asy myśliwskie Imperium Rosyjskiego.
EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:53, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. I took the above, and turned it into a first draft of the list. You can take a look at it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Georgejdorner/Stan_Dallas_claims. If you spot any errors in the names you gave me, please correct them. You did not give me the last four names; they were on the second page of the aerodrome's list, and I think you may not have seen them.

I also filled in the aces' birth places; if you could check and correct those, I will add the categories and we may have a list to post in mainspace.

Georgejdorner (talk) 00:35, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Eugene,

I have revised the first draft extensively in accordance with your feedback. It needs a couple more amendments, but is progressing nicely. How about taking a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Georgejdorner/Stan_Dallas_claims?

Georgejdorner (talk) 02:17, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do you want to try again?[edit]

Eugene,

The List of World War I flying aces from the Russian Empire came off smoothly. I wonder if you would care to colloborate with me on a biography of Grigoriy Suk? I have already gathered materials on him. Your added contributions would be welcome, as would your Russian language skills. Unless, of course, you prefer to write the article yourself, without my involvement.

What do you say, my old picnic buddy?

Georgejdorner (talk) 23:31, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My writing skill is not so good :-(, so fixing mistakes and minor additions are much more easy for me :-) Just for information, there is pl:Grigorij Suk article as well as in Hungarian Wikipedia. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:49, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you can catch my foolish errors in Russian spelling and usage, that would suffice. If you care to add some text, I will edit it into fluent English without changing your meaning.

I can't translate an existing article in a foreign language. Even if I could, I would still have the problem of citing sources. However, I have the article on Suk from Above the War Fronts, plus http://www.theaerodrome.com/aces/russia/suk.php, http://www.firstworldwar.com/bio/suk.htm, and http://www.wwiaviation.com/aces/ace_Suk.html. That should be enough for a Start level article.

Will you please help me?

Georgejdorner (talk) 15:42, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to help, but my free time is limited :-( I found big biography (but no references) and small one (with references). I tried to translate big one with Google Translate and it did so surprisingly well. So you could try it too. There is may be discrepancy in dates because of non-specifies Julian (used in Russian Empire) and Gregorian (modern) calendars. So it's good idea to look on dates in smaller article. Will be good idea to use both Julian/Gregorian dates for birth/death. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:00, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Eugene,

I hope this finds you in good health.

I have roughed out a draft at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Georgejdorner/Stan_Dallas_claims. I couldn't do much with the two articles you noted. Also, even though I know their is a difference in calendars, I have found myself unable to cope with translating "old style" dates to modern ones.

Please take a look, most especially at the Russian place names, and make necessary corrections.

I know it's not much of an article, but it is better than a blank nothing in WP.

Best regards, George

Georgejdorner (talk) 15:38, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I did some changes. Probably awards dates may be added according to http://www.retroplan.ru/encyclopaedia.html?sobi2Task=sobi2Details&sobi2Id=576. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:22, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rudolf Bunk[edit]

Dear Mr. Zelenko,

in terms of your alert I feel glad to inform you that the reproductions of the works of the painter Rudolf Bunk were allowed to me by his daughter Bojana Denegri. She asked me to upload them, because she didn't know how.

Here is our conversation finished in January 2015. I hope that you can read Croatian.

Original Conversation

Dragi Gospodine Besker,

velika Vam hvala sto ste ubacili slike u njemacku wikipediju.

Historija melje polako, kako znamo.

Srdacno i jos jednom velika Vam hvala. Darovali ste meni i bratu ne samo zadovoljstvo vec i jedan koristan poklon.

End of the conversation with Bojana Denegri

Anyway, uploading those reproductions, I was trying to help not Wikipedia, but its users. As an ancient person, teacher and journalist, I have no other aim but to offer information. I can understand the juridical clearness is needed. But I've written everything about the source and aim of the reproductions you've mentioned when I've uploaded it.

I'm not sorry about the time I've spent in the conversation with the heirs of the painter, but I regret the time I owe to the necessary bureaucratic meanders.

So, dear Sir, feel free to delete whatever you want, it will not impoverish me but Wikipedia. I have no time to explain things more than once, and now I did it twice.

Sorry, I don't know Croatian so well :-( Proper way to deal with permissions is send permission to commons:Commons:OTRS (example: commons:Commons:Email templates). Other important question is her daughter only heir to artist? If not, other heir(s) should provide permission(s) too. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:02, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Photo for deletion[edit]

Photo for deletion
Hi Eugene, I am trying to send a message to you, but I can't found where I can send it, I was trying a lot of links.

About that photo, Um exemplo de entropia, I tried to use on the test pages on Wikipedia in Portuguese, I am a beginner to edit articles on wikipedia and I was trying to understand how to create an article on Wikipedia.

I agree with the deletion of that photo, I really didn't know the use of test pages could be mess other parts of Wikipedia.

Excuse-me to send message here, I really don't know how to send messages to another users. I am trying to understand how create articles on Wikipedia, but it is very hard.
